New Tears for Fears album (early 2014)
The original duo Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith are back with a new album early 2014. The first link was leeked two years ago while recording. The second was officially released this past August. An Arcade Fire cover!
This shit is fucking great!

I know. Even many commercial alternative bands sound 80's. Turn on Alt Nation sometime. You'd think you hit 1st Wave by accident. However, Tears for Fears didn't even have the sound/style from "The Hurting" on their second album. Definitely not their third. Why would they go back?

The 2 samples above don't sound even remotely like what I would think or expect Tears For Fears to sound like, didn't do anything for me. Maybe their new stuff is intended for a younger audience than for someone who has appreciated Tears For Fears in the past, I don't know. What I do know is that I wasn't impressed either. I'm sure there will be an audience for it but it will have to exclude me.

It's just dated because the debut was considered a new wave/synthpop record. None of their other releases relied quite so heavily on the electronics facet. There are very few releases like this one these days. See Chvrches and new NIN records for a start.

Well, both Yaz albums and Human League's "Dare" all sound fresh and crisp after all these years (IMO). I would compare TFF's "The Hurting" to Howard Jones "Human's Lib". Both fantatic, but don't feel they have held up the same way (as Yaz or Human League). Still freaking love all of the above.

You obviously don't keep up with synthpop: there are tons of records that sound like this these days. In fact, it's getting hard to find synthpop bands that were "influenced" by 80s bands vs. bands that sound exactly like 80s bands. Last year, there was even a surge in "West Coast Synthpop": bands that sound exactly like Berlin or Missing Persons.

Re: New Tears for Fears album (early 2014)
My friend in Canada is a big TFF fan, and she asked in passing if I had heard anything about their supposed new album, and the only thing I could find is that they're still working on it. In the meantime, she said she'd still like to get a hold of Graduate, an early band that Roland and Curt were in. I found a copy online, and talk about new wave/synthpop! I listened to it all the way through, and there are some hits and misses, but for the most part I found it fairly enjoyable. It's a 2001 remaster that contains their first album, Acting My Age, and all the tracks from their abandoned second album.
Anyone heard Graduate before?

Thank's for posting that video. I had never heard of Graduate. Once I was done laughing I actually enjoyed the song. Ha!
Awesome.

Never heard of them. And based on that, wouldn't like it. But loved TFF since the beginning.

From what I read, this was actually the lone single from the album:

Wow! Worse.
Shocked on how different it is from TFF in both style and quality. Of course now I'm going to have to pull out my TFF and play them through.

Re: New Tears for Fears album (early 2014)
They're including the same song twice in a row? And how does an album with 17 (or 18) tracks warrant a double CD release?
