Interesting premise. Definitely interesting enough to watch a couple of episodes.

Justin Theroux has been cast in Damon Lindelof’s HBO pilot “The Leftovers.”
Drama, based on a novel of the same name written by Tom Perrotta, centers on life after the Rapture happens — and the people who didn’t make the cut, and are left behind in a suburban community.
Theroux will play Kevin Garvey, a chief of police and father of two who is trying to maintain some semblance of normalcy in this new world. The thesp recently appeared in feature film “Wanderlust,” and held a recurring role on NBC’s “Parks and Rec.”
Theroux shares a history with HBO as well, as he appeared in “Six Feet Under” a decade ago.
Lindelof is exec producing and co-writing “The Leftovers” with Perrotta. Peter Berg, also an executive producer, is slated to helm the pilot. Ron Yerxa, Albert Berger and Sarah Aubrey serve as exec producers as well.

I guess Kirk Cameron was unavailable.
Has Eccleston ever appeared in more than one season of a show?

I dunno. I really liked the book alot and could see how that would translate very well to one...maybe two season show. But I'm hesitant to tune into anything Lindelof is involved in (angrily shakes fist at the last season of Lost, Prometheus and World War Z's third act).

Lindelof makes this an absolute non-starter for me. That asshole could fuck up Scarlett Johansson's debut in porn.

Pun intended?

Not big on the cast, and I'm not sure how they can turn this book into a series - but I'll give it a shot since I enjoyed the book.

Sounds like a book Cameron and his fellow christians would want to burn:

There is an actual Rapture
(literal truth), but people selected
are not those who expected to go
(God's sovereignty)., Among the
taken are Buddhists, Zoroastrians,
atheists, Jews, Muslims, Hindus.
Among the leftovers is a Bible
thumping preacher who devotes
his life to exposing the sins of
some who were selected.

I read the book after Damon announced he was working on this. Great read. Of course he's perfect for this. It's all about the journey baby! Don't expect anything for the ending.
I will watch flies eat shit if Damon was involved.

Looks great - I wasn't aware of the books but I'll definitely check out the series.

Is there more than one book?
I loved the book, as I said earlier, but if people hated Lost won't like this shoe either.

Looks interesting but the last religious type good vs. evil show I remember on HBO was called Carnivale, and that didn't fare too well. Hope this one does better.

I don't think the history of Canivale will be a good barometer for The Leftovers. "It's not just what it's about, it's how it's about it." -- Roger Ebert
The trailer looked good so I'm in to start.

The trailer didn't do a lot for me... hopefully it's better than what the trailer shows.
I suspect they only took the basic premise and maybe 3 characters from the book.

To clarify, Carnivale didn't fare too well in terms of audience size and ability to continue the story, but the quality of what made it to the screen was just fine.

I'm quite familiar with the famous Ebert quote.
I like the trailer but I don't think it will have wide appeal. Would love to be proven wrong.

I guess I'm the only one around here who didn't like the book. Good premise, but Perrotta didn't seem to know where to go with it. I remember the chain smoking cult reminded me a lot of the tongue cutters from World According to Garp.
In the book, it seemed pretty clear the disappearance wasn't the result of the Biblical rapture.
Comparisons to Lost and Carnival seem odd. Unless they depart majorly from the book, I'd expect the show to be more in the vein of Big Love or Six Feet Under than anything with fantastical elements.

Show looks interesting. We don't have HBO (or cable) but I'd probably watch a few episodes to check it out if we did.
