Seems like a double dip is in store. Has Criterion ever done that before?

They've reissued titles with better transfers or more supplements before, but years after the first release. This is the first time since the Laserdisc days when they've deliberately released a stripped-down version first with the intention of a double-dip in the near future.

The price is great and I wonder if the second release will include both cuts. So for now I'm keeping my pre-order.

I see. I recall them double dipping on DVD but wasn't aware they also did it on BD.

I don't think they've done it for blu-ray yet. There's the upcoming re-release of Breathless, but that seems to only switch from regular to dual format.

Well, in terms of rereleasing something that they released on DVD on Blu-Ray, they've done that numerous times (Still waiting on Le Samourai and Ugetsu). Didn't they do both a single and double-disc version of Benjamin Button?

I enjoyed the movie too much and with the price being what it is, I'll be picking this up. We don't yet know the details on what the other version will include and when at this point. Who knows if it'll even be in 2014...

If the better version includes both cuts I'll just sell or give away this version.

Benjamin Button was a Criterion release in-name-only. The Blu-rays were actually distributed by Paramount through the normal Paramount retail channels. But because of David Fincher's relationship with Criterion, they struck up a deal where the disc would receive Criterion branding.

Interesting. Is that what also happened with The Rock? Because I always found it odd that the non-Criterion BD has all the special features of the Criterion DVD.

In that instance, I believe that Disney licensed the supplements from Criterion for its own non-Criterion Blu-ray.

Wasn't The Rock a DC for the CC DVD? Is that also what was on the the BD?

Director's cut? I don't think there ever was one for The Rock.

There hasn't been. It's been censored to various degrees overseas, but I think it's since been released in the unedited theatrical version on home video.

You're confusing it with Armageddon. The Criterion DVD of that movie also featured a director's cut. As I recall, they only added like 3 minutes and I remember thinking they were pointless extensions.

EDIT: Here's a comparison of the two cuts. The DC is 2:36 minutes longer.

The upcoming release will be the theatrical cut that runs around 179 minutes. The director's cut (to be released later) will apparently be 219 minutes long.

For a barebones disc, though. Just because it says Criterion on it doesn't mean that it's worth that much more. The days of OOP Criterions going for hundreds of dollars are over.

Yeah, it's pretty lite on the special features:

Special Features:
•New high-definition digital transfer, approved by director Abdellatif Kechiche, with 5.1 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack on the Blu-ray edition
•Trailer and TV spot
•New English subtitle translation
•PLUS: A booklet featuring an essay by critic B. Ruby Rich

I beg to differ. Looking at completed auctions for OOP blu-rays on eBay, you've got Third Man ($300), The Man Who Fell to Earth ($165), and several of the more recently OOP ones in the $80ish range.

I loved getting that BD before it went OOP. Really good BD. And it is still better than the current BD out there. In every category.

Well then, the days of barebones Criterions going for hundreds of dollars when decked-out special editions are available are over!
