Mega Concerts You've Been To (Non-Festival)

So I noticed that the Grateful Dead released a DVD of the 1989 show I attended in JFK Stadium in Philadelphia. It was the last concert ever in that stadium. 95,000 people.

It made me think of the other nuts shows I saw at that stadium (now demolished).

Pink Floyd at JFK Stadium, 1987. 120,000 people and it wasn't sold out.

The Who, The Clash, Santana at JFK Stadium, 1982. 92,000 people.

The only show I've seen that could hold that many people was The Rolling Stones at Candlestick Park with Metallica opening, back in 2005.

I have seen many "stadium" shows, but I did attend the U2 360° Show at the Rose Bowl, which supposedly set a new US attendance record for a single headlining act with 97,014 people in attendance.

Re: Mega Concerts You've Been To (Non-Festival)

That is an awesome pic for the U2 show.

The biggest I've been to were probably Lollapalooza 91 or 92 in Atlanta.

I actually don't really like the big shows like that. If I go to one, it would have to be a 'festival' type atmosphere - last one I went to was GWAR-B-Q which wasn't actually all that big. If I'm going to pay 80 bucks and be a mile away from the band, I'll just buy a concert bluray. Or nothing. I can't even get into it at big indoor venues, much less those that are bigger than some cities. Love me a small venue where I'm ten feet from the band, or closer.

Interesting that U2 was said to be the biggest crowd when the Pink Floyd show I was at had 120,000 people.

Pink Floyd held a concert on September 19, 1987, in front of a crowd in excess of 120,000 (general admission was sold on the field), but the show was not sold out.

I don't like big shows either but The Who, Pink Floyd, and the Grateful Dead were epic bands playing epic shows. It's a totally different vibe. I can't think of any current band that exudes the vibe those bands did at the time.

Yea, I'm not sure how they came to that record, but it was in the news at the time and it's on the 360 wiki page. Did PF have another "headliner"?

That would be the only thing I can think of...

Biggest I've been to was probably Pearl Jam at Soldier Field, 1995.

out of curiousity - how much were tix? with THAT many people I'm sure the promoters made a mint from that one show alone.

Re: Mega Concerts You've Been To (Non-Festival)

I don't recall. I'll have to see if I still have the ticket stub.

I started this thread because I had no idea those three concerts were so big until I researched the Dead DVD. (Actually, I thought The Who was the biggest of all but it turns out it was the smallest.)

I do recall The Clash getting booed through most of their set. (Combat Rock tour) This was the classic rock crowd.

One interesting item in that photo in the OP. None of those stadiums exist any longer. In the foreground is JFK Stadium. Behind it is The Spectrum. (Flyers/Sixers arena). And behind that is Veteran's Stadium.

Where JFK is in that photo is now the Wells Fargo Center. Where the Spectrum is is now a huge nightclub complex. Veterans' Stadium is a parking lot.

Re: Mega Concerts You've Been To (Non-Festival)

I've seen Metallica twice at the Pontiac Silverdome (which holds 90,000+, not sure how many were actually in attendance for each show, but they were pretty full) and each time with a large list of bands opening for them.

First was New Year's Eve 1999, and before Metallica were Sevendust, Kid Rock, and Ted Nugent

Second time was Summer Sanitarium in 2003, with Mudvayne, Deftones, Linkin Park, and Limp Bizkit opening.

I was at the Body Count/Metallica/Guns N Roses show in 1992 at the then Jack Murphy Stadium. I would say roughly 70,000 people.

The last biggest I have been to would be Paul McCartney at Great American Ballpark in Cincy in 2011. Not as big as most mentioned, probably in the 50k range.

Even though it's a festival, I'm curious. where was that concert? Quite the eclectic lineup.

Are there bands that can even do shows like these anymore? I hear U2 and maybe Springsteen etc. But will there ever be another Grateful Dead, The Who, or Pink Floyd doing shows like this? It seems like the golden age of rock music has come and gone and now it's been replaced with festivals with 75 bands on 4 different stages.

Re: Mega Concerts You've Been To (Non-Festival)

In further research of JFK Stadium concerts, I found out that Led Zeppelin was slated to play the final show of their 1977 tour there. The final 5 shows were canceled due to the death of Robert Plant's son. Of course, John Bonham died before their next American tour making 1975 the final year Zeppelin played in Philadelphia. I remember my older brother getting worked up about seeing Zeppelin in what was to be their 1980-81 American tour.

They built Glen Helen Regional Park for the show, and built the stage (which at the time was the largest stage in the world.), later they added seats, and made it an amphitheater.

It's now called...San Manuel Amphitheater.
