Walmart has exclusive versions on their site as well. $32.38 2D / $49.48 3D. But they don't say what the exclusives are.

I'll also bet that Amazon has at least one (if not both) of their statue versions as a lightening deal during Black Friday.

Is that different from the other 3D Extended edition versions? Because I sure as shit don't want a 3D-only version of the extra-long movie.

Well that just took it from a must purchase to a pass. No way am I buying a 3D ONLY version of anything.

Yes, the normal extended edition 3D release is a 5 disc set that includes 2D & 3D versions while the Best Buy steelbook is only the 3D version

Sure enough, it's just the Best Buy steelbook 3D version. The version on Amazon has an extra 5th Blu Ray disc with the Extended Edition plus commentary track.

Checked out WBshop and Wal-mart's sites and they show 5 discs as well.

I honestly can't believe that Best Buy would arrange for a retailer-exclusive that deletes the most essential part of the package - the movie in 2D Blu Ray. Have no idea what they were thinking -- Steelbooks are a nice collectable, but they're certainly secondary to the actual movie they're supposed to be housing.

Agreed. Also the commentary is only on the 2D disc. I might skip this and wait until the three movies are in one big complete package.

i don't understand...if you have the 3D version, why do you really need a 2D version at all?

I can not speak for everyone else, but if a movie comes out with a 3D version available I pick up that version. That being said, while I may have the 3D version I do not always feel like watching it in 3D.

Partly what darkdaze said, I may not be in the mood to deal with glasses and 3D each time I want to see a particular film. But mainly, I only have 3D capabilities on one specific TV, but watch films in multiple places in my and other's homes.

seems kinda expensive for a 3D bluray.. even with the extras. What would you suggest would be a fair price to pay for this? $39.99 is normal?

On average, Disney 3D blu's have always been the most expensive, and even on release days, they're in the $27.99 or less range.

Re: Why no info on Hobbit auj Ext Edt blu-ray exclusives??

The prior comments covered the reasons for wanting 3D + 2D versions of the same movie. While I personally love 3D and will always want to watch in 3D, I know people who say it gives them a headache and only want 2D, and supposedly young children aren't supposed to watch 3D, plus as stated not every TV in most houses has 3D.

Disney's latest round of 3D BDs were $29.99 each, but with the BB combo deal it brought it down a few dollars. I'd normally say never pay more than $25 for a 3D BD or $15 for a 2D BD new release, but sometimes I make exceptions.

For the The Hobbit extended edition 3D BD is at most $29.99 for me and most likely $20-$25. It would depend on how substantial the extras package is too. I haven't looked into the releases yet due to lack of time.

For me, I am currently not 3D capable but know I will be someday. I will buy the 3D version to future proof myself.

That's what the marketing folks have been saying all along.

Think of it as a courtesy to the consumer to include a normal Blu-ray movie along with a shortly-lived and hyped product that varies greatly in value of its "3D performance" as many movies are hardly worth the 3D label.

For me, 3D Only = DO NOT WANT.

Wonder if I should wait a couple years and see if they come out with a trilogy box set for the extended 3d movies

You know they will. And to top it off, I'd expect an Ultimate Tolkien Set, which will house all LOTR movies as well as Hobbit movies.

Re: Why no info on Hobbit auj Ext Edt blu-ray exclusives??

Sometime in the last week, Amazon had the Bluray+UV set down to $19.99.

I pre-ordered it when it was $24.99 and in my Gold Box for $1.25 less... today I found the price adjusted down to $19.99 and $1.00 off (Gold Box discount at 5%).

Go me!
