Cars 3 (Pixar/Disney, 2017)

Here we go again. Parents be prepared to open your wallets:

http://screencrush.com/cars-3-pixar-2018/

In news that should surprise no one who keeps an eye on Disney’s finances, word has surfaced that ‘Cars 3‘ is in the works over at Pixar. Animation fans can wail and gnash their teeth as much as they want over this much maligned series, but there’s no denying that these films have been a massive success for their studio and a ‘Cars 3′ was simply inevitable. It was all a matter of when it got announced.

But that official announcement is not here today! Instead, we get a kinda-sorta confirmation from a man who may or may not know exactly what’s going on. The source of the buzz is Michael Wallis, the author of “Route 66: The Mother Road,” a historical consultant on the ‘Cars’ films and the voice of Sheriff in Radiator Springs. He “confirms” the existence of ‘Cars 3′ in the middle of a 25-minute radio interview, saying that the new film will return to the Route 66 setting of the first film and will feature Route 99, a famous California highway.

Of course, a consultant and voice actor is not the best source of information when it comes to discerning what the most power movie studio and most acclaimed animation studio are up to next, but a new ‘Cars’ film is as certain as death and taxes. Although both ‘Cars’ and ‘Cars 2′ were big hits at the box office, they have been massively successful on the merchandising end, with toys from the film bringing in untold riches for Disney. The fact that entire “lands” at Disney Land and Disney World are now dedicated to this franchise is additional proof that they plan to milk this one for all that it’s worth.

Due to schedule fluctuations involving the troubled ‘The Good Dinosaur,’ Pixar’s line-up for the next few years is a little up in the air. They probably see something like ‘Cars 3′ as a security blanket, the kind of cash cow they can break out in a few years to keep everything running optimally. Now we just have to wait for the official word.

Gotta keep the merchandise flowing.

As much as I'd rather see Pixar spend their time and efforts on something new I can understand why they'd be making a new Cars movie. I'd even be willing to watch it...assuming Tow Mater isn't the lead, which was the biggest mistake in Cars 2.

Yeah, I liked Cars all right (and my boy watched it approximately 10000 times on DVD) but Cars 2 and the Mater Show was a pretty steep dropoff, worst thing Pixar's done I think.

For some reason the kid liked 2 much more than 1.

^ not a dead horse with all that money rolling in.

Cars 2 is easily Pixar's worst (although Monsters U gave it a run for the money) but I'll withhold quick judgement until the trailer. Getting back to Route 66 is a good sign.

Ditto. I go by their scale when it comes to the Cars movies. Guess I'll take her to see another. And since my wife just had twins, they'll be 5 by the time numero 3 comes out.

Yeah..get back to the routes.

I did hear rumblings that Cars 3 would actually be a prequel to when Radiator Springs was in its heyday. The crazy thing about it is they already have a whole line of car toys that is in the Retro Radiator spring collection (when Radiator springs was at it heights)

Considering how much of a cash cow Cars merchandise is for Disney, this is a no-brainer.

I'm down with that idea, but how would they sell that one without McQueen and Mater?

I like Cars.

Cars 2 is utter fucking swill.

Now IF they are doing Cars 3, make it a musical focusing on Flo's days touring with Motorama Girls. Full on DREAMGIRLS vibe. With Taylor Negron as the voice of a unicycle with a heart of gold.

I didn't like Cars 1 or 2. Both are bottom rungs of the Pixar ladder (with Brave being at the very bottom).

Man people were just totally unforgiving with BRAVE. I thought it was a good little movie...

A Pixar version of American Graffiti would be pretty sweet. They could add a whole slew of new toys on store shelves with hot rods and great classic cars.

re: Cars 3 (Pixar/Disney, 2017)

I liked Cars, didn't like Cars 2 at all because of the focus on Mater. If it's a prequel, I'd be kind of bummed since it wouldn't include Lightning, but maybe something about Doc coming to Radiator Springs would have been neat.
