The Third Annual November Comedy Challenge *Discussion Thread* Nov 1-30, 2013

The Third Annual November Comedy Challenge

2011's discussion thread
2011's list thread

2012's discussion thread
2012's list thread

| Challenge starts at dusk October 31st and ends November 30th |

Rules

This Challenge overlaps with two well-established Challenges - October's Horror Challenge and the Holiday Challenge. During the overlapping days, you can receive "double credit" by listing any qualifying items watched for those other two Challenges on your Comedy Challenge list.

It should be self-evident what titles qualify, but if you have questions about something you've never seen, check out its genre classification on IMDB or Allmovie or ask in the discussion thread.

Post your list in the list thread. Be as creative or as basic with your list as you want.

You may number (or not number) the items on your list any way you like. However, the preferred method is, as with the Holiday Challenge, any title watched, no matter how long or how short, counts as one list item. This should make it easier to record qualifying items on both lists if you participate in both Challenges.

Free stuff!

Once again, the great folks at Hamilton Books have provided us with some cool prizes. Thanks, GoldenWheels!

I'm open to suggestions. Fire away.

Let me know if you want to have theme nights and a checklist. If you like/hate the new rules changes. Whatever. We have three weeks to iron this out before we start...

^Yep... I still have the last 2 or 3 sets of Stooges to view plus lots and lots of movies. I also just purchased The Beverly Hillbillies S4 and Petticoat Junction S3 from WM which are begging to be watched!

Looking forward to some laughs to wash the memory of exorcisms, torture, and monsters under my bed out of my head.

I love this challenge, especially for how it well it fits between the two surrounding it. The transition from horror to comedy is welcome and there's a great deal of overlapping material available for the comedy/holiday part of the month.

Been looking forward to this one for a while. I've still got Three Stooges sets to get through as well as some sitcoms that I've been stockpiling for a while.

I can see using some of those. Veterans Day is the 11th - so I'd put Military Comedies down for that. I'd definitely keep the 1st for Horror Comedies and the 28th for Thanksgiving Comedies.

Keep the suggestions coming.

Ordered one of the Three Stooges DVD sets today, just for this challenge, and I have an unopened DVD of Halloween themed Three Stooges episodes as well.

Re: The Third Annual November Comedy Challenge *Discussion Thread* Nov 1-30, 2013

November 2nd is the date of George Bernard Shaw's death.
November 3rd is Diwali.
November 4th is Will Rogers' birthday (and Kathy Griffin's).
November 5th is Chris Addison's (although he may not have a varied enough career for some people to find things to watch).
(November 5th is also Muharram, the start of the Muslim/Islamic new year.)
November 6th is Emma Stone's birthday.
November 15th is Ed Asner's.
November 16th: Griff Rhys Jones and Martha Plimpton were born, Arthur Askey died.
November 19th is Meg Ryan and Terry Farrell's birthday.
(November 19th is also International Men's Day..!)
November 26th is Charles Schulz's birthday. Also Rich Little's and the day of Goon Michael Bentine's death.
November 29th is Joel Coen's birthday.
November 30th is the date of Oscar Wilde's death.

(If there were any plans for a subset of films, then I vote C.S.A. for November 6th; in 1961 Jefferson Davis is elected president; in 1965 the CSS Shenandoah "is the last Confederate combat unit to surrender".)

How about a Movember tribute night? Watch a film starring a comedian or comic actor who has a mustache. Many possibilities: Groucho, Charlie Chaplin, Peter Sellers, Terry-Thomas, Oliver Hardy, John Cleese, Kevin Klein, etc.. And it's for a good cause, greater awareness of men's health issues.

Thanks. I'm penciling in Charles Shulz's birthday, but I might expand that to "Based on a comic strip" day.

A film subset is a little too specific (and too much work) for this challenge. We'll be lucky to have 30 participants in total, let alone 30 who want to pick and watch specific films for specific days.

I'll make that Nov 2 so people will be aware of it early in the month.

I think I'd like to keep the themes kind of generic, like last years. Here's the new list and the old one for reference.

Theme nights list-in-progress:
Spoiler:
1- Horror comedies
2- Movember - Watch a comedy starring a comedian or comic actor who has a mustache.

11-Military comedies

23- Harpo Marx's birthday - watch a comedy where at least two cast members are brothers

26- Charles Schulz's Birthday - watch a comedy based on a comic strip

28-Thanksgiving comedies

Last year's list:
Spoiler:
November 1 – Horror Comedies
November 2 – Fish Out of Water
November 3 – Sex Comedies
November 4 – Workplace Comedies
November 5 – Teen Comedies
November 6 – Politics
November 7 – Buddy Comedies
November 8 – Stand-Up Comedy
November 9 – Slapstick
November 10 – Spoofs
November 11 – SciFi Comedies
November 12 – Military Comedies
November 13 – Romantic Comedies
November 14 - Silent Comedies
November 15 – Funny Females
November 16 – Screwball Comedies
November 17 – Sports Comedies
November 18 – Sketch Comedies
November 19 – Stoner Comedies
November 20 – Foreign Comedies
November 21 – Road/Vacation Movies
November 22 – Holiday Themed Comedies
November 23 – Crime/Caper Comedies
November 24 – Mockumentaries
November 25 – Sitcoms
November 26 – Fantasy Comedy
November 27 – Action Comedies
November 28 – Ethnic Humor
November 29 – Animated Comedies
November 30 – Comedic Kids

Any themes we should drop? Any you want to see added?

Re: The Third Annual November Comedy Challenge *Discussion Thread* Nov 1-30, 2013

I would say Black Comedy is different enough from Horror Comedy - and important enough in its own right - to stand separate.

I'd like to see Musical Comedy added, although I imagine most such items can slot in elsewhere, and I didn't quite get "Fish Out of Water" last year - mostly, I think, because so many otherly-comic situations feature such a character. It seems almost (almost) redundant.

While I understand the differences, could "Foreign Comedy" and "Ethnic Humor" be combined, perhaps?

I would also politely suggest the removal of "Funny Females" - while I liked it last year (watching, I think, French & Saunders, Victoria Wood, Julie Walters and others), I think it should instead be a key element of the checklist, and not a theme day in and of itself: there are enough funny women that anyone with any sense can watch something featuring them on any day. Can, and should.

Improv doesn't seem to be on the list, is it varied enough to add, I wonder?

I particularly like the "s"s: sitcom, spoof, sketch, slapstick and silent (also sci-fi). Please keep those.

Also, personally, I would like "sitcom," "kids" ("family"?) and "animated" to be placed on weekend days, please!

I was trying to think of the best suggestions to have the Thanksgiving-30th period themes easily line-up with the Holiday Challenge. Kids and animated certainly make sense, but I recalled some difficulty with "ethnic" (above), "crime" and "mockumentary". Also "fantasy"... unless, I suppose, a certain person's presence automatically denotes the fantastic! Then I realised when Thanksgiving is this year... problem solved.

How about comedy combined with every other challenge in the year, like the following:

TV comedy (any sitcom)
Oscar-nominated comedy (THE PHILADELPHIA STORY)
Crime or action comedy (e.g. BEVERLY HILLS COP, OCEAN'S 11)
Exploitation comedy (PORKY'S, REVENGE OF THE CHEERLEADERS)
Historical comedy (CASANOVA'S BIG NIGHT)
Sci-fi comedy (SPACEBALLS, SLEEPER)
Animated comedy (MONSTERS INC.)
Criterion comedy (I MARRIED A WITCH, PUTNEY SWOPE)
Horror comedy (ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN)
Holiday comedy (HOME ALONE)

Lots of good suggestions, thanks. I'm happy to throw some themes out and add some back in (like black comedy - since it had a "year off"). I'd like to keep "Funny Females," but "Ethnic" is one I wanted to drop and replace with something else.

I'll try to work on the themes some more over the next couple of days, so people can suggest better days for the themes if/when I screw it up.

I don't know if I'll give each one a day, but those look like great checklist items. Maybe I'll use them for both.

I like the "Year of Comedy" as 12 Checklist items.

(Actually, it would be a good suggestion for Holiday, too - the "12 Months of Christmas"! )

How's this for (minor) additions, compound alterations and day-alignments:

November 1 – Horror Comedies

SAT November 2 – MOVEMBER: Mustachioed Men
SUN November 3 – DIWALI: Foreign or Ethnic Comedies

November 4 – WILL ROGERS: Starring as myself
November 5 – Silent Comedies
November 6 – C.S.A.: Politics and Satire OR Mockumentary
November 7 – Road Trip or Buddy Comedies
November 8 – Sports

SAT November 9 – Slapstick
SUN November 10 – Spoofs

November 11 – VERTERAN'S DAY: Military Comedies
November 12 – SciFi
November 13 – WHOOPI: Funny Females
November 14 - Screwball
November 15 – Crime/Caper

SAT November 16 – Sketch Comedies
SUN November 17 – Musical Comedies

November 18 – SINBAD: Improv or Stand-Up Comedy
November 19 – MEG RYAN: Romantic Comedies
November 20 – DICK SMOTHERS: Double Acts
November 21 – Sex or Stoner Comedies
November 22 – Fantasy Comedy

SAT November 23 – HARPO MARX: Funny Families; Comedic Kids
SUN November 24 – Mockumentary OR Politics/Satire

November 25 – BEN STEIN: Panelshows, Gameshows, Other
November 26 – CHARLES SCHULZ: Based on a comic or Animated
November 27 – Black Comedy
November 28 – THANKSGIVING: Holiday Themed Comedies
November 29 – GARRY SHANDLING: Sitcoms

SAT November 30 – Workplace

New category: "Starring as myself" - films featuring people like Will Rogers, Laurely & Hardy or WC Fields, who essentially play themself in whatever role they inhabit.

Deliberately Distanced:
Horror & Black
SciFi and Fantasy
Satire and Mockumentary

Combined:
Sex and Stoner (rationale: not everyone's cup of tea; for those whose it is, other days - Romance, Workplace, Buddy & Road Trip - can function well. Or the perennial standby ANY DAY.
Road Trip and Buddy (similar to above, with the added proviso that even more than sex/stoner, these two - in my thinking - appeal to the same group of people)
Foreign and Ethnic (I think everyone should watch at least one foreign film, but they can fit on other days; I can only think of one or two "Ethnic" comedies that aren't already something else first)
Action/Crime/Caper (as per the challenge, these can seem interchangeable..)

Expanded: Harpo Marx's birthday being designated "brothers" seemed to fit well with families and kids. Family to mean "starring members of a.." and/or "family comedy".

Consider: to free up more "new" days, combine sketch and sitcom into "TV: Sketch and Sitcom".

(Actually, it would be a good suggestion for Holiday, too - the "12 Months of Christmas"! )
The MYOC and comedy challenges wouldn't really work for this. So you're left with ten.

New category: "Starring as myself" - films featuring people like Will Rogers, Laurely & Hardy or WC Fields, who essentially play themself in whatever role they inhabit.

Deliberately Distanced:
Horror & Black
SciFi and Fantasy
Satire and Mockumentary
Teen and Kids
Teen and

Cool. I can just copy this.

Spoiler:
I probably will use most of that. I'll take a closer look at it when I get some more time.

Happy to help... although even after thinking about it, I left "Action" separate from "Crime/Caper" and snuck Animation into Schulz, so those should be reversed: Animation on the 27th, Action folded into the 15th.

Note that we're planning to incorporate a Cheers season 2 community viewing event during the month as well.

How about documentaries? I have a 2 DVD set of the entire 50 year career of the Three Stooges.
