Boardwalk Empire -- "Erlkönig" -- 10/06/13

Synopsis:

Nucky (Steve Buscemi) heads to Philadelphia to deal with the fallout from Willie's (Ben Rosenfield) liquor fiasco. Eddie Kessler (Anthony Laciura) is detained by Agent Knox (Brian Geraghty), who uses physical and psychological tactics to elicit information about Nucky's organization. A desperate Gillian (Gretchen Mol) turns to an unexpected source to score a fix, and is rebuffed in her attempt to reunite with Tommy (Brady Noon). In Cicero, Van Alden (Michael Shannon) is recruited by the Capones to pay an election-day visit to factory workers who are opposed to the Capones' candidate of choice.

Written by Howard Korder; directed by Tim Van Patten.

So long eddie. I liked him, same with capones brother (the now dead one). Nucky with a good lesson on how to throw someone under a bus.

That's what I love about this show, how they create this story around real people & events. I have no idea if frank was the cool level headed one in real life, but that is certainly how he died. (according to wikipedia anyway)

I don't think there was any intention to give his character any sense of peace. He was the one loyal spirit in this whole mess.

Him giving up seems like a gateway to really bad things happening. I am thinking out loud of course.

Well, that sure was a bummer of an episode! Between Eddie being gone and Frank Capone dead, shit's about to go off. Al without a leash is going to be nuts.

Re: Boardwalk Empire -- "Erlkönig" -- 10/06/13

to see Eddie go

in the grand scheme of things, the FBI has no usefull info from Eddie - they know Nucky has ties to different cities, pays tributes, bribes officials - and probably knows that the Capone brothers are mid level gangsters in Chicago.

However - to Eddie, the whole world is going to come apart because of this info.

Bud dammmn what a setup for Al Capone to go on a kicking ass and name taking spree.

If they get rid of that stupid story line with that woman, they could spend even more time in Chicago

I can't think of any TV character changing as much as Van Alden has since season 1. And it's happened organically. Great stuff.

A Heroin fueled Van Alden teaming up with Al Capone is going to be fucking awesome.

Where was Richard? He really needs to make his way back to Atlantic City and work for Nucky.

Oh Eddie. I was afraid he wasn't going to make it much further, but not like that. Loved his character.

Poor Eddie. I figured he'd be gone at some point this season, just didn't think it'd be this soon - especially right after his promotion. Nice reveal about his back story. He was just lying to everyone and himself about his family back home.

Frank Capone dead now. I'm sick of the whole guy continuing to stand while taking a barrage of bullets scene. So played out and unrealistic.

This show seems to have no problems killing off characters, but they don't seem to be replacing them with anyone substantial. That may be why we're getting some filler from the likes of Gillian.

The Willie storyline better be going somewhere and not just end here, otherwise it'd be a big waste of time.

The richard story line with his sister was kind of boring- I'm glad he was not in this weeks episode.

He is a great charachter, but the writers are doing him no favors.

Again from wikipedia, frank was shot dozens of times, it appears they aren't just making a dramatic stretch there. I suppose they could have continued after he was on the ground but who knows for sure. Also, remember bullets back then aren't nearly as sophisticated as they are now, they are just slugs, not hollowpoints.

Was Al using heroin or cocaine? I was getting the impression based on his more manic state that it was probably coke, versus heroin being more of a downer.

At some point is this show just going to spin-off itself and become Chicago-centric? The Atlantic City stuff seems pretty played out at this point. And to me it seems like the Willie storyline is pretty much sewed up -- the Thompsons are stone-cold and will throw anybody under the bus to protect the family.

Re: Boardwalk Empire -- "Erlkönig" -- 10/06/13

I think there is probably still a lot to cover in AC and new york, we haven't really seen luciano or meyer lansky rise up (along with bugsy seigel), they are still essentially lieutenants to rothstein.

I do wonder if they will skip ahead at some point, we are 4 seasons in and still only in 1924. Looks like a lot of the mobster wars happen in 28-31. If we jump ahead a bit, get a couple seasons of the war, the establishment of the 5 families and the chicago outfit, capone going to prison, then wrap the show in 1933 or so, I think that'd be a good goal.

In real life, Al was the level-headed one and Frank was the psycho.

RIP, Frank and Eddie. Poor Ralph must be having a tough week.

I saw Eddie's demise coming a mile away, but it was still hard to watch.

This season is finally starting to pick up. Glad I didn't give it up.

It was 100% coke.

Al made a comment last episode, something like "beats my wife's coffee any day". No way that's heroin.

Eddie's death caught me completely by surprise.

I thought he was going to shoot himself.

Re: Boardwalk Empire -- "Erlkönig" -- 10/06/13

Yeah Eddie's death was unexpected. He could have just told Nucky what happened. Even if he still planned to kill himself, I'm sure Nucky would be interested to know that he has two agents after him. Then again, I think it was Nucky's comment about his socks that pushed Eddie over the edge, and he wasn't too interested in helping Nucky out at that point.

And yeah, I love Van Alden. They really took a bad character and developed him well. I hope they don't turn him into a coke fiend though.

God, what a depressing episode - even for Boardwalk.
