I have a Sony STRDE835 reciever and I was watching Titan AE (please refrain from making fun of me about the movie or reciever choice) in 6.0 DTS sound... I had it cranked up loud. It sounded crisp and clean - no distortion... however - during the early scene where they were escaping as earth was being blown up, I smelled something that smelled like burning electronics. I've smelled it before when I blew a fuse in a borrowed bass amp. This is the first time I smelled this and I was wondering if it's a sign of things to go wrong down the road or if it's normal to smell this the first time you give your system a work-out? Could this be a burning fuse? Can I replace it easily? Please don't tell me this is because Sony is crap - it's all I can afford - sorry. Anyway - aside from that - it didn't feel unusually hot (I've read alot of complaints that this model Sony can get scorching hot) and the sound didn't distort... Any help?

If it continues to work fine, I'd say don't worry about it. Perhaps a speck of dust/dirt landed on something that was hot and made that smell. Kind of like what you smell with new electronics.

Wow, is that like DTS 5.2, with the extra .1 being smell-o-vision? http://talk.dvdtalk.com/ubb/wink.gif

It sounds like you're overheating a component on the circuit board.
I've done it before and fried a receiver, without the receiver feeling hot and without audible distortion.
You might pick up a little fan to put in your equipment rack so that it blows on the heat sinks of your receiver. (something like a computer case fan). They're available at Radio Shack for about 5-10 bucks.

Thanks - I wanted a confirmation of what I was suspecting... so it's not really serious, but it should be taken as a warning sign that I'm overworking it? I will get a fan for it. I thought it might be a burning fuse, but I don't suppose the new recievers have fuses.
