David Milch’s ‘The Money’ Gets HBO Pilot Greenlight With Brendan Gleeson

Brendan Gleeson is set as the lead in The Money, David Milch‘s latest drama project for HBO. With Gleeson on board, it has received a formal pilot order. Written by Milch, The Money is about wealth and corruption among the super elite, focusing on American mogul and patriarch James Castman (Gleeson), who wields power and influence to expand his media empire and control his family.

Milch is executive producing with Art & John Linson (Sons Of Anarchy) and Frank Rich, who has a deal at HBO. Justin Chadwick is set to direct the pilot and co-executive produce with Eric Roth and Sarah Caplan. Gleeson, repped by Principal Entertainment and Ireland’s The Agency, has won an Emmy for an HBO project, the 2009 movie Into the Storm. This would mark the veteran actor’s first U.S. TV series. For Milch, who has been under a deal at HBO for a decade, The Money marks his fifth pilot at the pay cable network. Three of the other four — Deadwood, John From Cincinnati and Luck — went to series.

I still haven't seen Luck, and John From Cincinnati still isn't on HBO Go for some idiotic reason, but Gleeson and Milch together means I'm in.

Luck is great. It is really unfortunate that the horses died and it got cancelled. John from Cincinnatti had dialogue that made Deadwood seem like a Curious George episodeby comparison.

I enjoyed John from Cincinnati (strange as it was), but that's just not true. The dialogue in Deadwood was simply amazing.

I'll watch this new series as well, but every time I see a new series by Milch, I have to admit I'm still bitter about Deadwood.

Gleeson is a decent actor, but I don't know if he has enough star power to carry a series. The last thing I saw him in was that Denzel Washington movie Safe House. IMO, they would need to cast a few younger and known actors to balance it out.

Not counting the horse issues, Luck was hurt IMO by most of the cast being really old. I don't think that show really appealed to younger viewers.

I remember saying the same thing about Steve Buscemi when Boardwalk Empire was announced. Hopefully this turns out as good as that did.

Curious to see how the rest of the casting plays out for this. Regardless, I'll tune in regardless for the Milch factor.

JFC might be the HBO show I enjoyed best. The Wire was the best show (ever) but it wasn't always "enjoyable."

I think a lot of people were predisposed to dislike JFC because it was perceived -- fairly or unfairly -- as having killed Deadwood.

Personally, I really enjoyed JFC.

Thinking about Luck makes me sad about Dennis Farina all over again.

Great, I can't wait to watch the next David Milch show that no one watches and HBO cancels.

I think you misunderstood me.

The dialogue in Deadwood is probably the best dialogue in any show that I have ever seen. But it was complicated, sometimes almost Shakespearean in nature. But it was awesome. I would rewind often just to listen to the dialogue again. It was a travesty the way Deadwood ended.

What I was saying about JFC was that the structure and syntax of the dialogue in it was so complicated it made Deadwoods seem incredibly basic. There was dialogue in JFC that was almost not even decipherable.

Fair enough, I see your point.

I actually miss both shows. Unfortunately, flashburn makes a good point, too. I'm hesitant to get invested in a new Milch show as I'll just be expecting it to be cancelled, without any sort of resolution.

I'm sure I'll be "all in" after the first episode, but I'm already prepared for the cancellation and unresolved story lines. Such a bummer, since I'm a huge fan of David Milch's work.
