The Super Cops (an underrated gem). Shaft should also be included in the list.

^Sweet. I thought Richard Harrison was Ray Lovelock and thought Joe Dallesandro was Tony Musante.

I saw 28 of these in theaters when they came out.

I wouldn't call ELECTRA GLIDE IN BLUE or NIGHT MOVES particularly gritty. There are some prison films in there that don't quite fit in with the rest--SHORT EYES and MIDNIGHT EXPRESS.

Adding to the list:
FRENCH CONNECTION II
TROUBLE MAN
THE OUTFIT (based on a Richard Stark novel and starring Robert Duvall, Joe Don Baker and Robert Ryan, with tons of great heavies in cameos, e.g. Timothy Carey, Marie Windsor, Elisha Cook, Tom Reese, Bill McKinney, Roy Jenson, etc.)
THE GETAWAY
DILLINGER

Some Eastwood movies:
Dirty Harry
Magnum Force
The Enforcer
The Gauntlet

Missed a few Charles Bronson flicks

+2 points for The Driver. holy shit that is a neo-Western at its finest.

Re: Gritty crime films of the 70's.

Oh yeah, there's also the Laughing Policeman where Walter Matthau has to slap a broad. NM saw that up there in Charlie Goose's list, a good flick!

I haven't seen it yet, but if the hunchback is played by Tomas Milan, then it's Brothers til we die.

Checked IMDB. It is Tomas Milian, but the movie is a couple of years older, Assault with a Deadly Weapon.

I remember it as BRUTAL JUSTICE, which is the title it was called when it played grindhouses in New York, which is when I saw it. But I believe it's the same film as ASSAULT WITH A DEADLY WEAPON.

Re: Gritty crime films of the 70's.

In Japan, Kinji Fukasaku made a bunch of gritty Yakuza movies that moved away from the more ritualized action in the more formulaic Yakuza movies of the 1960s to a more realistic form of crime movie. Check out:

STREET MOBSTER
COPS VS. THUGS
SYMPATHY FOR THE UNDERDOG
YAKUZA GRAVEYARD

...and especially:
THE YAKUZA PAPERS (5-film series)

You forgot the best one after The Yakuza Papers : Graveyard of Honor

Also Hideo Gosha's Violent Streets & The Wolves
