I wouldn't call ELECTRA GLIDE IN BLUE or NIGHT MOVES particularly gritty. There are some prison films in there that don't quite fit in with the rest--SHORT EYES and MIDNIGHT EXPRESS.
Adding to the list:
FRENCH CONNECTION II
TROUBLE MAN
THE OUTFIT (based on a Richard Stark novel and starring Robert Duvall, Joe Don Baker and Robert Ryan, with tons of great heavies in cameos, e.g. Timothy Carey, Marie Windsor, Elisha Cook, Tom Reese, Bill McKinney, Roy Jenson, etc.)

This, along with
Charley Varrick
& The Laughing Policeman
are what I call Walter Matthau's Action Trilogy.
Freebie and the Bean (James Caan)
The One Man Jury (Jack Palance)
Some Eastwood movies:
Dirty Harry
Magnum Force
The Enforcer
The Gauntlet
Missed a few Charles Bronson flicks
Mr. Majestyk
The Family
St. Ives
Telefon
The Mechanic
Love and Bullets

Oh yeah, there's also the Laughing Policeman where Walter Matthau has to slap a broad. NM saw that up there in Charlie Goose's list, a good flick!

I remember it as BRUTAL JUSTICE, which is the title it was called when it played grindhouses in New York, which is when I saw it. But I believe it's the same film as ASSAULT WITH A DEADLY WEAPON.

Re: Gritty crime films of the 70's.
In Japan, Kinji Fukasaku made a bunch of gritty Yakuza movies that moved away from the more ritualized action in the more formulaic Yakuza movies of the 1960s to a more realistic form of crime movie. Check out:
STREET MOBSTER
COPS VS. THUGS
SYMPATHY FOR THE UNDERDOG
YAKUZA GRAVEYARD
...and especially:
THE YAKUZA PAPERS (5-film series)
