STEVEN SODERBERGH AND CLIVE OWEN TEAM UP FOR
NEW CINEMAX ORIGINAL SERIES THE KNICK
LOS ANGELES, July 25, 2013 – Academy Award® winner and Emmy® nominee Steven Soderbergh (“Traffic,” “Side Effects,” HBO’s “Behind the Candelabra”) will direct Academy Award® and Emmy® nominee Clive Owen (“Children of Men,” HBO’s “Hemingway & Gellhorn”) in the entire ten-episode season of the CINEMAX original series THE KNICK, which begins production in New York in September.
Michael Lombardo, president, HBO Programming, says, “We are thrilled that Steven and Clive have chosen to bring this unique and exciting series to CINEMAX.”
Set in downtown New York in 1900, THE KNICK centers on Knickerbocker Hospital and the groundbreaking surgeons, nurses and staff, who push the bounds of medicine in a time of astonishingly high mortality rates and zero antibiotics. The writing team of Jack Amiel and Michael Begler (“Raising Helen,” “Big Miracle”), who wrote the pilot for the series, will serve as executive producers, along with Soderbergh, Owen, Michael Sugar (“Rendition”) and Gregory Jacobs (“Behind the Candelabra”). Michael Polaire (“Behind the Candelabra”) produces. Kary Antholis, president, HBO Miniseries and CINEMAX Programming, and David Levine, vice president, HBO Entertainment, will oversee the series, which will debut on the network in 2014.
Soderbergh is directing all 10 episodes. I have to admit a period drama with Clive Owen and about hospitals doesn't sound all that interesting. But, I'll wait until some footage is released before I make a better assessment.

I was excited, until I read the synopsis. I'll still give it a try, but it doesn't sound like sound like something I'd want to watch.

Just call up Directv when The Knick premieres and get a deal. I'm certain they will have one for a new subscriber. When I first got Max, they gave me something like half price for 6 months. You'll get to watch The Knick and all the Cinemax soft core porn your heart desires.
No seriously if you do get it, you should also marathon Strike Back and Banshee. But I know you already have a hard enough time keeping up with the shows you barely keep watching.

1st trailer with actual footage:

The premise for this show didn't really sound that interesting at first. But, now seeing that it's dealing with the early stages of 20th century medicine and how primitive and gory it is, I think this could be interesting. Plus, Soderbergh's directing all 10 episodes, so that is good enough reason to watch.

Interesting. Cinemax must really like the 10 episodes to give it another season. Plus, getting Soderbergh back for the 10 is big.

That shadow does present an unfortunate resemblance. Somebody in the art dept. should have caught it.
The actual mustache he sports in the show is shown here:

Reminder this premiers tonight.
It's also a free preview weekend for Cinemax (and Starz) for most carriers.

the 1st episode is also on HBO at 10 eastern time this evening. I guess they are trying to get it out there as much as possible.

Very interesting start. I was cringing during the attempted C-section. That was worse than brutal.

I loved it, but I am such a sucker for stuff about the early age of medicine.
Too bad I don't have Cinemax (and no intent on getting it).

I didn't even realize this was a series until this week...I thought this was another made-for-HBO movie with Owen.
Probably a pass for me, doesn't look that interesting.

Wow, I thought this was incredible. The surgical scenes were intense, to say the least. I think this one has real potential, of course I'm a bit of a Soderbergh junkie. Still, this one holds the same appeal as Masters of Sex, in terms of seeing early developments in science and the politics around it. The setting and tone of this show have me really excited.

I'm down as well. Great pilot, and that c-section was fucking brutal.

I liked what I saw so far. It didn't wow me but hopefully it continues to get better over the course of the season and those surgeries man hard to watch but brilliantly done.
