Giant Bomb's Ryan Davis has died

I am literally stunned. He was one of my favorites.
Ryan Davis passed away on July 3rd. He was 34.
Obviously we’re all stunned over here. Ryan was a good friend to all of us. It’s odd to remember that, for someone who could be so acerbic at times, and despite knowing him for almost a decade, I honestly don’t recall ever actually being mad at him. He had an unconventional type of kindness that expressed itself more strongly the longer one knew him, and despite his teasing nature, he always managed to make his close friends feel loved when his attention turned towards you.
Many of you know that Ryan was recently married. In the face of this awfulness, many of us will at least always remember him as we last saw him: outrageously, uproariously happy, looking forward to his next adventure with the biggest grin his face could hold.
The consolation we can feel from that is miniscule compared to the hole that Ryan’s absence will leave in our lives. That’s not a hole that is possible to fill; it’s just something that we’ll just have to get used to walking around with, and that will not happen for a long, long time.

Re: Giant Bomb's Ryan Davis has died
Shit. I'm listening to him right now as I learn this...literally talking in my ear.
Edit...nevermind, he wasn't on this week, but they opened talking about how he just got married and his wedding.

Jesus Christ, this is really sad. I was just listening to the Bombcast in the car 30 mins ago and said to myself I can't wait until he is back next week, because without him, it just seemed off. Now it will never be the same

I mean, the guy just got married so obviously others are far more affected, but I have no precedent for someone I listen to for hours every week just...dying. I am rarely affected by "celebrity" deaths (as in people I know of but do not know personally) and this one was like a quick gut punch. Just...wow.

Still have the E3 Day 3 show on my iPhone...giving it a spin for nostalgia's sake. Will miss that dude for sure...though I admit that for some reason I always had a hard time differentiating between him and Jeff even though they don't sound all that much alike (which is why I didn't realize he wasn't on the show this week).
Just stinks all around. Any word on what happened? Accident?

Re: Giant Bomb's Ryan Davis has died
So sad. After spending years listening to the Giant Bomb podcasts, watching their videos, and seeing him in person at PAX and PAX East, I feel like I knew him even though I never actually met him. It's strange to feel this affected by his passing. It must be especially painful for his friends and family given how young he was and the fact that he had just gotten married.

Such a punch in the gut. Been listening/watching the guy for years. I walk by the Giantbomb offices everyday on my way home and I usually saw him out front on his laptop. Always though about stopping to say high, but never did.
So sad that he just got married a couple of weeks ago.

Jesus. I was just listening to the Giantbomb podcast this morning. I was a couple of episodes behind, so I guess that will end up being his last one if he wasn't on the most recent.
Very sad and shocking news.

Thought this was a cool thread of different ways people are remembering him

RIP Ryan Davis
Just found out that game reviewer Ryan Davis has passed away. For those that don't know, Ryan originally cut his teeth at GameSpot and years later after "Gerstmann-gate" followed his friend Jeff Gerstmann to build "Giant Bomb" , IMO one of the best places for video gaming bidness. He acted generally as host to most of their live events and on the top rated Bombcast podcast. He was genuinely one of the funniest people on the internet. The tragic part in all this is he was married just over a week ago. Here is a link to the sites page for him.

(if this dosen't warrant its own thread, I understand. Just wanted to show my appreciation for the man)

Never heard of him but 34 is ridiculously young. What did him in?

They aren't saying but I suspect it was a health reason. If it was an accident, I feel like that would have come out. He was fairly overweight too.
He was one of the more notable game journalists out there and widely regarded as one of the nicest guys around.

His friend Dave Snyder (who helped create GB) also made his own Davis tribute page.

I'm glad there's other folks out there like me. Listened to this guy for years from Gamespot to Giant Bomb. It seems like someone close to me has suddenly passed. I will definitely miss him.

I think she's dealing with her grief through humor. I don't know how else you'd get through something like that. And if she married Ryan Davis, she probably shared his odd/dark idea of what is funny.

Re: Giant Bomb's Ryan Davis has died
I don't know if anybody else listened to this week's Bombcast, but it was a nice tribute to Ryan. You also get the distinct impression that it wasn't a surprise...little comments here and there...sounds like a health issue that they've all known about for a long time but haven't shown.
I noticed that the Idle Thumbs guys also did a show on Ryan. If you guys don't already listen to them, now would be a good time to start...one of my favorite gaming shows. They're part of the Giant Bomb network, but they've been on and off for several years and just recently joined GB.

Re: Giant Bomb's Ryan Davis has died
I listened to it and thought it was a great tribute. I didn't get the impression that it wasn't a surprise at all. Remember, they had known about his death for nearly a week already.
