Jacob's Ladder -- remake (2019) S: Michael Ealy

Buried in a Variety piece about the script acquisition of a crime spec called Transit we found a bombshell of an announcement: Producer Alison Rosenzweig is at work on developing a remake to Adrien Lyne's 1990 mindf**k of a movie Jacob's Ladder.
No further details were revealed.
Inspired by Ambrose Bierce's "An Occurence at Owl Creek Bridge," Jacob's Ladder finds a Vietnam vet/postal employee (Tim Robbins) suffering nightmarish visions. Suspecting he was exposed to a nerve agent while in the war and that demons are following him, he begins to lose his grip on reality. Amazing film and amazing script by Bruce Joel Rubin.
One can only imagine what an update could do with America's current occupation in Iraq. Rosenzweig is also producing the hibernating Darksiders at New Line and Sanctuary at Lionsgate.
We'll keep our ear to the ground for more information on "Ladder."

Okay this is beyond ridiculous. How could they improve upon the original?
Oh wait they could dumb it down and include a lot more jump scares for the teen set.

Boy, I can't wait until they remake Children of Men for the myspace generation. I'm sure we'll get one in the next two years at the rate Hollywood is running out of ideas. 
I wonder if the new Hulk movie will be considered a remake? If so, then the remake machine has hit the '00s.

Jacobs ladder is a great movie. Prob. my #1 most disturbing/frightening film.
Its not a perfect film but we really dont need a PG-13 version starring Paul Walker set in Iraq.

King Kong: one remake in the 70s; the most recent by Peter Jackson in 2005.
Although that might not count since the 70s one was set in the modern day.

Jacob's Ladder isn't being replaced, supplanted, re-edited or replaced in any way. It still exists and will still exist for anyone who wants to enjoy it. A remake should not affect one's enjoyment of the original unless one is so shallow as to allow that to happen.

My problem with remakes of this sort is it basically "dumbs down" the appreciation of film history. I'm generalizing, but it's like today's generation won't watch anything older than 15 years. There were some great movies made before 1992, and it would be refreshing if more people made an effort to discover them - or the quality of movies suffer as a whole.

More people will be interested in Jacob's Ladder now that there's an original. In fact, this may drive me to actually see the movie, which I got a year ago and haven't seen yet.

True, but at what cost? Reinforcing the remake/sequel concept is a big reason that Hollywood is devoid of original ideas nowadays (imo). I heard an NPR interview with Paul Fieg and he thought the same was true with television nowadays. The safe-bet/sure-sell mentality that if it ain't broke...
Sure, "crying" about it on an online forum won't help things. But I vote with my $9.50.

You know, the main reason studios remake good movies is for the younger generation and a quick buck. It will be dumbed down and made hipper for all the kids by getting an unknown director who uses quick edits and gore. It's the same thing as all those Super Special Fantastic Edition 20-Disc DVDs that keep coming out for the same movie. It's all about the money. No one particularly asked for two minutes of boring dialogue to be added back into a movie and be labeled "The Version You Weren't Allowed to See!".
I just watched The Hitcher remake the other night, and let me tell you how disappointed I was. There was no more tension or suspense. Just gore. Everything that made the original good, was left out of the new version. Absolutely nothing was improved upon (because it was almost the exact same movie minus character development) What worries me is when someone watches the inferior version (remake) first. It ruins the surprises and themes of the original (if they ever happen to go back and watch it). The remake becomes the standard version for the viewer, and they never get to experience the original as a standalone and singular vision. You can only watch a movie for the first time once.
I have nothing against remakes if they are done with care and respect towards the original, and not just a carbon copy and for a quick buck.

In my opinion, Jacob's Ladder is only one of two movies ever made where the ending:

Oh shit. Usually I'm a remake defender but I really can't see this ending well. The original has such a creepy wtf tone that I can't ever see another film (especially a remake in our torture-porn horror era) doing any justice to the original.

There have already been a few movies that were more or less remakes (or ripoffs) of Jacob's Ladder. They'll probably change all the details and young it up anyway. I often wonder why they bother to keep the name on these things, considering 1) fans of the original are usually pissed about the idea of the remake so the name isn't going to draw them in, and 2) the people who the remake would appeal to (mainly teens) probably haven't heard of the original in first place (and so the name itself has no drawing power), so why use the same title?
