Getting smart tv surround sound

Lets say I have a smart television. I run an hdmi cord from the input on the tv and it goes into the "hdmi out" on my receiver.

If I want to use Netflix streaming fom my app on my smart tv, what is the best way to achieve surround sound through the receiver?

Would I add another hdmi cord leaving the tv and then enter one of the hdmi inputs on the receiver? Not sure if this full loop would work...

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

Only if your TV supports ARC (Audio Return Channel). Some do, but all I've encountered are very difficult to get to work. A much easier option would be to use the TV's optical out to the reciever's optical in. You won't be getting lossless audio from the TV anyway so it should support Dolby Digital & DTS surround sound.

If your equipment does support ARC, it is only 1 HDMI cable needed. And it will depend on your TV's app whether it will output Dolby Digital from Netflix.
