MacGruber (Peacock) - S: Will Forte - premieres 12/16/21
After dropping hints earlier this year, Will Forte confirmed to Rolling Stone that he will soon begin writing a sequel to the highly quotable MacGruber.
The former Saturday Night Live cast member, now residing back in his native California, also said there have been discussions with the original cast, including Kristen Wiig and Ryan Phillippe, about returning for the follow-up.
"June 10th my writing partners John Solomon, Jorma Taccone and I are locking ourselves in a room and writing it," Forte said during a break in promoting his role in Alexander Payne's Nebraska, now in competition at the Cannes Film Festival. "We were happy with how the original came out. I guess you wouldn't call it a [box office] success but people got to see it, sometimes you just have to be happy with that."
In the wake of his friend Bill Hader's exit from the show that spawned Forte's MacGyver-based caricature, Forte shared his feelings on his own exit. "It's like going through a bad breakup, you don't want to watch the show, you don't want to talk to them [the cast]. But now we're cool." His sporadic returns to the program are prompted usually by phone calls from Jason Sudeikis asking him to come back for fan favorites like the ESPN Classic commentators Twinkle and Stink.
As for producing MacGruber 2, Forte said, "We'll start it on our own, but it'd be great to have a budget again."

I hated the MacGruber skits on SNL so I skipped out on the movie. Was it any good or just as crappy as the skits?

Is the movie as a whole good? No. But there are some scenes that are absolutely hilarious. Like the graveyard sex scene, which you can find on Youtube.

Loved "MacGruber". Top notch absurd, energetic comedy. Another good one was "You Don't Mess With the Zohan". Or the Harold and Kumar movies.
Maybe the comedy is not for you. But I liked it a lot.

The trailer for the movie was the best thing about MacGruber. All the funny parts were in it and it only lasted 2 and a half minutes! No need to waste your time on the whole movie.

I'd rather see a Hot Rod sequel, really. I like how they used much of Europe's The Final Countdown album - but NOT the title track.

Will Forte is asked about MacGruber 2 whenever he makes the press rounds to promote another movie. Last we checked, Forte said he met with MacGruber director/co-writer Jorma Taccone and they hammered out “a really solid first act.” At a junket for Forte’s new movie Life of Crime, Steve asked Forte straight up if the inquiries about a MacGruber sequel ever get old. Forte responded graciously, saying “it is very exciting because it means that people liked the first MacGruber.”
Forte went on to provide a status update about where he and Taccone are in the script process and reiterated their commitment to making MacGruber 2—if somebody will fund it. We’ll have the full Life of Crime interview up next week, but hit the jump for Forte’s MacGruber 2 update.
Here’s the transcript:
COLLIDER: Does people asking you about a MacGruber sequel ever get old?
WILL FORTE: No, it is very exciting because it means that people liked the first MacGruber. Unless they are saying, “Are you serious about Macgruber?”
“Like” is a weak word. We need to go with the word “loved.”
FORTE: Thank you. I’m very proud of that movie. Jorma [Taccone] just sent an outline for MacGruber 2. We had worked together on something and I had fleshed out the first act of MacGruber 2. He took that and went nuts on the rest of it. I’m very excited because I feel like at some point, if somebody will let us do it, then we’ll do it. But it’s out of our hands. But we’re writing it for sure.
I admire their devotion to this passion project, taking so much time to develop a movie that has no real place in the typical studio market. I trust Forte and Taccone will make calls to the usual financiers and distributors, but I’m starting to wonder if MacGruber 2 will end up in the hands of a nontraditional funding source like Kickstarter.
