First off, I'll admit I'm not a fan of 3D movies these days. I did see "Avatar" and was pretty impressed by the use of 3D in it (even if the movie itself wasn't great), but the few other movies I've seen with 3D it's just not done a thing for me. I had kind of imagined that the latest 3D revival would fade out like the vogue in the '50s and early '80s did but it seems to still be going strong. I actively seek out NON-3D showing of blockbusters like Iron Man 3 if I can help it. But it is just me that's sick of it? Is it going anywhere or are 3D versions of all the big movies here to stay?

Voted for I hate 3D and I think it'll end soon however I'm not sure it will. Neither "hate 3D" option worked for me. Saw Iron Man 3 in 3D, the first 3D movie I've seen since Avatar. I didn't need to see it in 3D. Don't see the point/appeal. But as long as the 2D showings are around I'm fine with it.

Hate 3D. It is an awkward, uncomfortable way to watch a movie. I went to see Jurassic Park in 3D because I really wanted to see it on the big screen again (sadly there were no 2D showings in my one horse town) and it was so bad I nearly took the glasses off, figuring I would rather watch the movie with the blurry picture. The 3D effect isn't even any good most of the time! So the guy talking is an inch or so from the foreground? Big hairy deal!

I really hope this 3D projection craziness ends very soon. Only a small percentage of people can actually see it properly, and the studios promoting it is resulting in many less showtimes for standard 2D showings. I have no interest in seeing something appear to "leap off the screen" every 20 minutes; its a distraction that snaps me out of the film.

I hate it too but the need of the TV manufacturers to sell a new TV every 2-3 years to people will drive it until the leap after 1080p takes off.

I wear glasses all the time. I really hate having to "Xzibit" myself to watch a 3D flick. Its uncomfortable for me. If I have the option, normal, cheaper screening for me thanks.

I hate it, too, but it will be around because it gives the studios an excuse to charge higher ticket prices for their big tent-pole films.

I can't say I love it or hate it (voted "I'm not sure", but that doesn't really describe my opinion). I like 3D movies which are shot in 3D and the filmmaker is clearly putting thought into the format (Avatar, Hugo, Prometheus, Hobbit). Hate the money-grab 3D movies that are mostly post-conversion and seem to be mainly an excuse to put a surcharge on the ticket price. Unfortunately the latter seem to be the majority. Doesn't seem like its going anywhere in the near future though and this current 3D crazy has by far outlasted the earlier ones. It'll take people voting with their wallets to change anything.

I've worn glasses since I was six, so wearing those stupid 3D ones over mine just made everything look darker.

If they ever get glasses-less 3D on the big screen, I don't think it'll end as the depth effect is pretty fucking cool, but I prefer to watch movies in 2D right now.

I don't hate 3D, I just don't care about it. 2D has always been the way I want to watch a movie, probably always will be. I just can't get past my antipathy towards having to wear special glasses just to watch a movie, nor do I particularly care to see raised images in my viewing of a film, I get all the raised images I need in real life, don't need it in my movies. 3D fills a niche that I don't ally myself with but as long as the niche exists, 3D movies will as well. As long as they don't discontinue 2D movies, I'll be happy. If they do, then I'll hate 3D.

I hate the effect too, but I feel like I'm in the minority on this one. 3D makes everything look darker, slightly lowered resolution. And since everything is in focus, it makes my eyes strain and by the end of the movie my eyes are worn out. I need to take a break halfway through but I'm SOL if I'm at a theater. I also wear glasses normally. I describe this to other people and they look at my like I'm crazy and have a blast with their 3D screenings.

The idea of 3D is excellent, the same as sound and color. But the technology just isn't there yet.

Should've been a poll selection inbetween love and hate. Every theater by me that has a movie in 3D also has the 2D version so it's really a non-issue.

But it's not going anywhere. A lot of the 3D movies are making tons of money overseas. And since the overseas market brings on more box office than domestically, the studios will continue to cater to where the money is.

I don't think its going to end. I think its going to change and get better. Right now good 3D really varies depending on how its being displayed. Most theaters don't show movies at the projectors full brightness (Which saves them money as it prolongs the life of the bulb) which results in a murkier image with less depth.

I worked on a few projects that part of my job was doing some 3D conversion on a few films. When we reviewed this on professional and calibrated screen. the 3D for these scenes where outstanding. Impressive and exciting. Then when the films were released we went and seen them at a couple different theaters and both were pretty flat and not very smooth. Very different then the final product I witnessed on a calibrated screen with full brightness.

^ This. I voted that I hate it but don't think it will end. If they start shooting more of them in 3D, I'm okay with it. However, I despise the post-conversion jobs. Sadly, with all of these major numbers coming in from 3D jobs, I don't see studios kicking it to curb.

As long as I can still see the same movies in 2D, I don't care if 3D continues to exist. I will only go to see a film in 3D if it was filmed that way. The "post-conversions" shouldn't exist.

So, I pretty much hate it (not 100%), but it's here to stay...

It does seem like excitement has died down for home 3D. 18 months ago or so, it seems like every other TV for sale was a "3D" tv. Now, there's only a handful, and they're typically in the back, not prominantly displayed.

I hate 3D, will not spend another cent on it. The glasses hurt, it's expensive, and it's dark.

I went to see Iron Man 3 this past weekend and paid for the 2D. Went in and it was packed to I got some glasses and went over to the 3D showing and I just don't get facination. Even if it were the same price as 2D I'd still go to the 2D showing every single time.

I like 3D but I also like that there are 2D options and that not 'all' movies are getting into it. Sometimes I think it's just a gimmick (like Pirhana 3D). Sometimes I think it makes a fun movie more fun (Avengers). And sometimes I feel it honestly adds to the story (Life of Pi). But other times I just enjoy a normal 2D show.

With that said, I think it'll be around for awhile. My reasoning is that having 3D shows gets people to go to the theater. You can't pirate 3D movies (yet) and only a small percentage can watch it at home on a 3D TV. So as long as it's getting butts in the seats, they'll keep making them.

I've only been impressed by one 3D film, Hugo. As someone who wears glasses, I don't really enjoy putting on yet another pair (making me a 6 eyes in 5 year old parlance) and really, the filmmakers don't seem to be doing much with it. Scorsese impressed me with the train station sequence in Hugo, but otherwise, I feel like directors are using it to make their films less cinematic and more "theme park experience" driven.

I figure it is here to stay simply because it is a method of delivery that is not easily replicated at home and certainly not on an iPad. Also, it is harder to pirate/impossible to pirate. That being said, I will likely see Gatsby in 3D once since Luhrmann's cinematic style has always been "theme park experience/excess" driven, so it should be a good match.

But, yeah, it's annoying and more expensive without adding much in the way of pushing cinema forward creatively other than adding some depth and coming at ya! moments.
