Live By Night (2016, D: Ben Affleck) - based on Dennis Lehane novel
EXCLUSIVE: Warner Bros Pictures chief Jeff Robinov didn’t waste any time moving to make Ben Affleck’s next picture after Argo snagged the Best Picture Oscar for the studio in February. I’ve learned that pre-production starts today on Affleck’s adaptation of the Dennis Lehane novel Live By Night with an eye to an August-September start date. So far only Affleck is cast. He also directs and produces as well as writes and stars in. Deadline’s Mike Fleming Jr first reported that Affleck was in talks with his favorite studio on the project and eyeing it as his next directing vehicle months before Argo captured gold. Warner Bros acquired Live By Night in April 2012 when it was in galley form for Appian Way to be produced by Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Davisson Killoran. Appian Way had a pre-existing relationship with Affleck and will now produce with Affleck’s Pearl Street, the Warner Bros-based company that Ben shares with Matt Damon. This is Affleck’s second adaptation of a Lehane novel: Ben in 2007 made his directorial debut with the gripping Gone Baby Gone based on the mystery series written by the author. Live By Night uses some of the characters from Lehane’s sprawling period novel The Given Day. The focus is Joe Coughlin, the black-sheep son of a police captain who gets involved in escalating levels of organized crime. The deal with Lehane and his agent Amy Schiffman at IPG made back then brought Warner Bros rights to The Given Day. That sprawling novel had originally been optioned by Sam Raimi but didn’t go anywhere. Lehane will complete the series as a trilogy but Affleck’s focus right now is just Live By Night which William Morrow published last fall. Affleck is repped by WME’s Patrick Whitesell.

Affleck seems to be at his best when he's doing his Boston shtick, and no one does Boston crime tales quite like Dennis Lehane. Good combo, I think.

The singer, who shared the screen with Daniel Day-Lewis and Leonardo DiCaprio in Gangs Of New York, has revealed he has read for the part of Affleck's Boston-Irish dad, Thomas Coughlin, in Live By Night.
Furey says, "I think they are going to start filming next year. I play his father who is a very clean cop and has never dirtied his hands. His son is a mafia boss, so he's disgusted with him."

I'm all for it. I really like the way Ben Affleck is going right now. Can't blame him for taking a big paycheck for that superhero bullshit.
Make that money and get back to making interesting films.

Re: Affleck to adapt Dennis Lehane's Live By Night
Warner Bros. has pushed back Ben Affleck's crime movie “Live By Night” from Christmas Day 2015 to October 2016.
Affleck was forced to delay production once he was cast as Batman in Zack Snyder's untitled “Man of Steel” follow-up, which will hit theaters in May 2015. He also has to keep his late 2014 schedule open to promote David Fincher's “Gone Girl.”
“Live by Night” is based on the crime novel by Dennis Lehane and will serve as Affleck's follow-up to “Argo,” which won an Oscar for Best Picture. Affleck is producing and starring in the film.

Re: Live By Night (2016, D: Ben Affleck) - based on Dennis Lehane novel
It’s been three years since Ben Affleck stepped behind the camera to direct his Oscar-winning “Argo,” and it now looks like he’s one step closer to getting back in the director’s chair.
Sources tell Variety that Warner Bros. has given the greenlight to Affleck’s next directing gig, “Live by Night,” with plans to begin production this November.
Affleck has intended to helm the pic, based on Dennis Lehane’s Prohibition-era crime novel, for some time, but starring roles in “Gone Girl” and “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” in which he will play the Caped Crusader, have delayed the process. Insiders say he is now ready to tackle the venture. The first feature Affleck directed, 2007’s “Gone Baby Gone,” was also based on a Lehane novel.
Elle Fanning, Sienna Miller and Zoe Saldana are still attached to star, with Affleck also starring and producing along with Jennifer Todd through their Pearl Street banner, as well as Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Davisson Killoran through their Appian Way banner.
Although he has several films in development, none is ready for production and Affleck had not committed to another film since he appeared in “The Accountant,” which filmed last spring.
Known for being meticulous during the pre- and post-production process, he will be able to take the next four months to tweak the script and not rush through the rest of the casting process before production is set to start.
WB had slated the film for October 7, 2016, and it’s not known at this time if the November start date will force the release date to move.
Affleck will have a busy 2016, as he will be seen in both “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” and action thriller “The Accountant,” which will bow in January.
He is repped by WME.

Sienna Miller. Ah, yes. A woman who is so fucking hit and miss. She was horrid in American Sniper.

She wasn't the only thing horrid about that movie. Ok I know...I just wish the guy in real life wasn't such a liar...Yes he is a hero; with some severe character flaws and yes that can be said of many.

Re: Live By Night (2016, D: Ben Affleck) - based on Dennis Lehane novel
Chris Messina is in negotiations to co-star opposite Ben Affleck in Warner Bros.’ crime drama “Live By Night.”
Elle Fanning, Sienna Miller and Zoe Saldana are also in negotiations to star, with Affleck also toplining and producing along with Jennifer Todd through their Pearl Street banner, as well as Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Davisson Killoran through their Appian Way banner.
Based on the Dennis Lehane novel, the Prohibition-set drama examines the world of organized crime. Messina will play Affleck’s best friend and partner in crime in the film.
Like Fanning, Miller and Saldana, Messina has been eyed to star for some time, but delays in production due to Affleck’s commitments to “Gone Girl” and “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” forced the studio to hold off on handing out other offers. Sources say that as cameras are expected to start rolling in November, more offers are expected to be handed out.
Known more for his work on TV shows like “The Mindy Project” and “The Newsroom,” Messina has stuck to indie fare when it come to his film career over recent years, including roles in “Cake” and “Manglehorn.” This role would certainly be one of his biggest commercial moves to date.

Re: Live By Night (2016, D: Ben Affleck) - based on Dennis Lehane novel
After working together on “Suicide Squad,” director Ben Affleck has cast Scott Eastwood as his brother in Warner Bros.’ prohibition-era crime drama “Live By Night,” TheWrap has learned.
A representative for Warner Bros. did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Based on the novel by Dennis Lehane, “Live By Night” stars Affleck as Joe Coughlin, the son of a prominent police captain, who enters a world of organized crime that takes him from Boston to Florida and Havana, Cuba.
Chris Messina, Sienna Miller, Zoe Saldana, Elle Fanning, Max Casella and Chris Cooper will co-star in the film, which Affleck and his Pearl Street partner Jennifer Todd are producing with Leonardo DiCaprio and his Appian Way partner Jennifer Davisson Killoran.
Warner Bros. will release “Live By Night” in 2017 — five years after the studio released Affleck’s Oscar-winning thriller “Argo.”
Eastwood is coming off the Nicholas Sparks adaptation “The Longest Ride,” and will soon be seen in Oliver Stone‘s “Snowden” and David Ayer‘s “Suicide Squad,” though his role in the comic book movie is being kept under wraps. He also appeared alongside Brad Pitt in Ayer’s ‘Fury” and played a part in his father Clint Eastwood‘s “Invictus,” which starred Affleck’s frequent collaborator Matt Damon.
Eastwood is represented by UTA, Joanne Horowitz Management and Stone Meyer.

Well, I know it's a very bold and probably inaccurate statement, but it seemed like a sprawling gangster pic with more than just posturing and violence ala Gangster Squad...

Looks alright, there's something about the actual look that I don't like -- not sure if it's the digital or what but everything just looks too modern in it.
So is the title Live by Night or Live by Night?

Yeah, my only issue would be a too modern look and feel.. other than that... looks like it's "The Town" in a different time period. (which I'm sure they are trying to market) Good thing Batman is next up for Ben, that'll change his directed films up a bit.

It's digital. It just looks different. We're very used to certain genres staying in one format.
