George Jones dead at 81

George Jones, country superstar, has died at 81

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — George Jones, the peerless, hard-living country singer who recorded dozens of hits about good times and regrets and peaked with the heartbreaking classic "He Stopped Loving Her Today," has died. He was 81.

Jones died Friday at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville after being hospitalized with fever and irregular blood pressure, according to his publicist Kirt Webster.

RIP Possum

Damn. He was classic country. I've been really getting into his music over the past weeks, too.

This is really sad news. I love country music and he was one of the best ever. I'm thankful that I was able to see him perform live back in '99 at Fan Fair in Nashville, TN. Him performing his top hits at that show is one of my favorite live musical experiences ever. I'll never forget it.

Fantastic entertainer. He didn't live the healthiest life and made it to eighty-one (unlike Richie Havens who recently died and only lived to seventy-two), so that's not too bad.

Awwwwwwwww. My FB wall is suddenly alive with posts. The only one missing is the one I haven't added, saying that it's just like old times now up in heaven ... George Jones is drunk off his ass and beating the snot out of Tammy Wynette.

Grew up listening to him because my parents only listened to two types of music. Country or Western. RIP George.

Are we related? I grew up listening to country music because that's all my parents would play at home or in the car. My Mom was a huge Elvis fan, my Dad, not so much. George had a one of a kind voice that could keep you entertained for hours on end.

It's funny to hear people harp on diet and exercise. George smoked, did coke and drank like a fish and lived to be 81. RIP Possum , you will be missed.

Rip Possum. About 20 years ago when I first moved to TN, me and a buddy were rollin' down the interstate to Nashville, when all of a sudden, my buddy practically jumps out of the passengers side window. He's screaming "Possum!" at the top of his lungs. I'm like wtf is going on. Sure enough, it was old George driving along. Cool fellow. License plate said POSSUM 7, or something to that effect.

My wife and I were just discussing this earlier today. It's amazing how some people like George and Ozzy Osbourne(among others) can use and abuse their bodies with drugs and alcohol and live as long as they live.

So glad that I got to see him in concert a few years ago. Definitely one of the all time greats.

Re: George Jones dead at 81

He was a country singer. 81 is about the life expectancy for people in that genre.
