RIP Chrissy Amphlett (Lead singer of Divinyls)
Australian rock legend Chrissy Amphlett, best known as the singer of the Divinyls, has died in New York aged 53.
The charismatic frontwoman was surrounded by family and friends at her home when she died this morning.
Her husband of 14 years, former Divinyls drummer Charley Drayton, says Amphlett died of breast cancer and multiple sclerosis.
In a statement released by ARIA, he added she had fought the diseases with "exceptional bravery and dignity".
"Chrissy's light burns so very brightly. Hers was a life of passion and creativity; she always lived it to the fullest," the statement said.
"With her force of character and vocal strength she paved the way for strong, sexy, outspoken women."

Sad news. I adored this woman. She was such a character with a very unmistakable voice. I just checked and I have 20 songs on my iPod from Divinyls and "I Touch Myself" is not one of them. They were much better than that. Very sad Chrissie is not here anymore.

Definitely sad about this. Spent 90 minutes listening to the Greatest Hits cd and now I'm just going to bed and try not to think about it.

Sad to hear.
Their first album is a fave of mine, full of great hook-filled pop/rock greatness fueled by Amphlett's raw and seductive vocals.

Their followup albums didn't quite reach the same heights as their debut, but still had their share of gems.

I know she's been sick for a long time, but I'm still shocked at this news. She was on television just last year after having balloon angioplasty in her neck; the effects of her MS were hard to watch.
Love her & Mark more than I can say; they created some of my favorite music. Every one of their albums had some truly fantastic material & her voice is one of the greatest in rock. Not to mention her ferocity as a live performer.
She will be missed.

I am bummed. I thought of her last week while watching the New Zealand-set mini-series 'Top Of The Lake', which in one scene featured some Divinyls music in the background....

I was flipping through the new wave section at a couple shops on Record Store Day and they kept popping up.

Very much agree with that. Even on the album that song comes from, there were better tunes than that. Sad to hear of this today, too.

It's staggering how many great songs they recorded, there really aren't many duds to be found in their catalog. Hopefully something is done in the future to fix up the first two albums to include the material that was excised for the American market & still hasn't been released on anything but vinyl. I want clean copies of Old Radios, What a Life, Talk Like the Rain, Sahara Rock, Girlfriends, etc.
Chrissy was an original:

Very sad indeed. I was also a huge fan of their first album, and saw them several times on that tour. "Elsie" was a powerhouse in concert. And they killed on their cover of the Easybeat's "I'll Make You Happy", which is probably my favorite song from their fine catalog.

Sad indeed...and just 53. She was smoking in that video " ITouch Myself".
