Hannibal -- Series Premiere -- "APÉRITIF" -- 4/04/13
Synopsis:
When the FBI takes on a case of disappearing college girls, Jack Crawford (Laurence Fishburne) recruits Will Graham (Hugh Dancy), a gifted criminal profiler with a unique view into the psyche of serial killers, to consult. Jack also seeks the help of Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen), a brilliant psychiatrist, who, unbeknownst to him, is not only one of the most successful serial killers of all time, but also a cannibal. After a copycat strikes, Will and Hannibal join forces to track down the culprit. Caroline Dhavernas and Hettienne Park also star.
13 episodes ordered. This doesn't premiere until tomorrow night, but I thought I would post it a day early to give those here who may not have heard about it a headsup to set their DVRs.
I'm psyched for this. Looks well made and I like the cast. Hope it breaks the Thursday at 10pm deathslot curse.
Starring:
Mads Mikkelson as Dr. Hannibal Lecter
Hugh Dancy as Will Graham
Laurence Fishburne as Jack Crawford
Created by Bryan Fuller (Pushing Daisies, Heroes, Wonderfalls)
Entertainment Weekly reviewed it and Doc Jensen gave it an A-. I've seen alot of good reviews so far.

This show might have had a chance in a different time slot. I have no idea why NBC continues to throw decent-looking shows into this deathslot for them. Even with three tuners that can record, I will not be able to record this program and NBC in their infinite wisdom is not repeating the show in a less-crowded slot. And before you ask, I have no intention of watching this program through their website or something of that nature.

Yeah the timeslot is quite crowded. Just checked and there are no re-airs scheduled as Phantom just said.
Phantom: Does your cable provider have NBC On Demand? Maybe that's an option if you have no tuners to record and since you're adamant about not streaming.

When I heard the premise of this, I wasn't interested. But then I saw Mads was involved, and a friend of mine said the script for the pilot was excellent, so now I'm in.

So I'm guessing this is like Bates Motel and it is not set in the proper time frame relative to the original movies? It's gotta be set in the present and not the '80s, right?

Hearing Sepinwall and Fienberg's glowing review has me pretty excited.
Apparently it's everything The Following and Bates Motel isn't

When Ed Norton played him in Red Dragon, I believe he was a veteran agent. Timelines with the movies don't jive.

Looking forward to this. I hope it doesn't crash and burn like the rest of the shows in this time slot.

As far as network competition, it's got a major uphill battle. Facing new episodes of Elementary and Scandal, which have pretty big fan bases already.
Hope the people who have ratings boxes will Hulu or Stream Scandal, DVR Elementary and watch Hannibal live. Who am I kidding? Nielsen families probably aren't that smart.

Too funny. I'm thinking the same thing. The Following will go on for 7 highly rated yet awful seasons, and Hannibal will spend those 7 years with a vocal minority that are still angry that it was cancelled.

Just finished it a few minutes ago. That was damn good. Loved the acting by Dancy and liked the introduction to Hannibal. Very stylized and it almost felt like a 45 minute feature film. I liked the way Dancy portrayed Graham. It was very similar to the way William Petersen played him in Manhunter. Graham is kind of weird and eccentric, but smart as hell. If I recall correctly, Petersen's Graham was driven to madness and left the FBI because of it. The final confrontation scene was pretty bloody for network TV.
at Hannibal giving Graham breakfast and the camera close ups to the sausage.
Mads was solid as Hannibal. Perfect casting. Fishburne was a good choice to play Crawford. Liked his version better than Dennis Farina in Manhunter.

Had a hard time understanding what Mads was saying half the time. Other than that, I thought it was pretty good.

I agree, I too had a hard time making out what Mads was saying. Otherwise, yes... I thought it was a great start. The ending was a surprise for a regular network channel... and NBC will find a way to mess this show up and get it cancel. lol

Yeah, Mads was tough to understand. I used CC for some of the show because of that.
I agree that Dancy was similar to William Petersen's version of Graham, except that I thought he did it well, while I thought Petersen did a terrible job. That's always been a thorn in my side with Manhunter.

Re: Hannibal -- Series Premiere -- "APÉRITIF" -- 4/04/13
NBC’s Hannibal welcomed 4.3 million total viewers to the dinner table in its Thursday premiere, while netting a 1.6 rating. That demo delivery marks a 60 percent improvement on NBC’s average in the time slot this season and its best Thursday-at-10 performance in more than a year (since March 15, 2012).
For comparison’s sake, NBC’s most recent scripted offerings in Thursday’s closer spot:
* Law & Order: SVU repeat: 4 million total viewers/1.0 demo rating
* Do No Harm premiere(/penultimate episode): 3.1 mil/0.9
* Awake premiere: 6.2 mil/2.0
