Sense8 (Netflix) -- from Wachowskis & J. Michael Straczynski -- Series Thread
Continuing its quest to sate subscribers' appetites with a flow of original content, Netflix has announced a new original series, Sense8. Due in late 2014, it's being developed by the Wachowskis of The Matrix, V for Vendetta, Cloud Atlas and Speed Race fame, as well as J. Michael Straczynski, creator of Babylon 5. Details are thin, but the press release promises a gripping global tale of minds linked and souls hunted with a ten episode run for its first season.
As it did with House of Cards, Arrested Development and other productions, Netflix is relying heavily on data from viewers to decide which programs to support. According to chief content officer Ted Sarandos, "Andy and Lana Wachowski and Joe Straczynski are among the most imaginative writers and gifted visual storytellers of our time," whose creations are very frequently viewed on the service. According to the creators themselves, they've sought to work together for a decade, and this idea started from a late night conversation about "the ways technology simultaneously unites and divides us." If that's not enough for now, then there are a few more details and quotes in the press release, which is included after the break.

The Wachowskis’ new sci-fi drama project Sense8 has landed at Netflix with a 10-episode order for a debut on Netflix Instant in late 2014. The series is produced by Georgeville TV, Reliance Entertainment/Motion Picture Capital’s TV studio, in association with Andy and Lana Wachowski’s Studio JMS. This marks the first foray into TV series for the Wachowski siblings, the masterminds of The Matrix franchise, who are teamed with with sci-fi veteran J. Michael Straczynski (Babylon 5). Sense8 is described as “a gripping global tale of minds linked and souls hunted” that incorporates Wachowskis’ storytelling style. “Andy and Lana Wachowski and Joe Straczynski are among the most imaginative writers and gifted visual storytellers of our time,” said Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos. Added the Wachowskis, “We’re excited to work with Netflix and Georgeville Television on this project, and we’ve wanted to work with Joe Straczynski for years, chiefly due to the fact his name is harder to pronounce than ours, but also because we share a love of genre and all things nerdy.” They also shed some light on how the series was conceived. “Several years ago, we had a late night conversation about the ways technology simultaneously unites and divides us, and out of that paradox Sense8 was born.”

Netflix is investing $300M in original programming over the next 3 years. Curious what slice of the pie this ends up being.

This looks kind of neat. Was going to create a thread in TV Talk for this, but a search came up with this.

I'd recommend creating one in TV Talk, the Streaming Forum is still niche.
This looks really good actually, I feel like I've seen an anime version in the past, but it looks like it translated well. Certainly looks to be the best thing the Wachowskis have done in a while.

Awesome! I know what I'll be watching this weekend. I had no idea this was coming, and I get to watch it on the day I learn about it! talk about instant gratification.

I'll be watching this on Friday, I love Babylon 5, I've got faith in anything JMS puts out. The Wachowskis are both good and concerning... hopefully JMS has kept their big ideas but reigned in their erratic storytelling.

I remember hearing about this show years ago but nothing in a long time. When I saw this thread bumped I figured it had been cancelled, so I'm glad it went forward. Will give it a shot this weekend.

I liked the first episode. I had some minor gripes with it, but nothing major. Then again, I've liked everything the Wachowski's have done, so what do I know?
It kind of reminds me of that show Touch, but not shitty.

I really liked the firs episode also. The cast is pretty big which might be a problem keeping everything together. Two of my favorite things were in this interracial lesbian porn and hot nuns. The sci fi crazy stuff was slow to build but not in a bad way. The end of the first episode hits hard in the last few minutes.
I think something important can be easily missed but I wont say what it is. I'll just say you should pay attention to who is seeing what and when.

The tranny lesbian stuff isn't my favorite part of the show, but I know Lana Wachowski (herself transgender) is part of the creative team so I get why it's there. Unless I missed something, I think it's a disservice to call what we saw porn. It was the sex lives of those two characters. The scene certainly didn't seem to pull many punches (hint for the non-viewer... a strap-on is involved). There's also a male gay couple too amongst our 8.
There are actually some things I wanted to discuss about the whole "gay" thing strictly from a standpoint of informing myself. It's coming at a time when Bruce --> Caitlyn Jenner is in the news, and I've had some questions from that too. First, is... "gay" doesn't seem to cover it. Is there a word that covers having a sexual identity that isn't male/female hetero? Like, if you're a guy and you transgender into a woman, but you're still attracted to women, my head starts to hurt. Bruce/Caitlyn said he isn't gay. But if you're a woman attracted to women, what are you? I'm trying to keep up, but I'm failing. Anyway, I'll hold on to some of my other questions until I see what kind of responses I get to what I've already asked. I don't mind speaking on this as I believe that's Lana's goal for force-feeding us so much of it. It's a part of the show.
There's no way I won't continue watching. It's big, it's interesting, it's vague, it's different, and it's building. I'm up to episode 3 so far, but I've seen the episode titles for the rest and I have no fear that it won't continue to get even better.

I love it but it isn't a action show. Two episodes in and I'm calling it a masterpiece but I don't know what I would compare it to. The show is mostly character driven. The show also has a very strong sci fi and mystery element to it. I was never bored once but it is slow.

I just finished episode 3. Now it's starting to take shape. You gotta stay the course but the payoffs are coming.

I wouldn't go as far as calling it a masterpiece but it's interesting as far as sci-fi goes I guess. There's better stuff out there though on regular TV. It's not nearly as good as the stellar 12 Monkeys, and that pretty much came out of nowhere. But this is decent enough.
