TV shows using virtual sets now

Well that BSG Blood & Chrome was touted as all virtual sets. However, I've noticed a few other shows that have used them. They don't 100% have the tech down yet since it is off just a bit but pretty close. Once Upon a Time seems to use them for castle scenes in the fantasy world. Easily a way to keep costs down since they don't want to build a castle set for 1 episode. A recent Castle episode had him go to Paris. Again, it looked like he was in a virtual set (or green screened into a Paris shot). Think the producers were just cheap and not want to send the actors to Paris to shoot the scenes.

Any other shows using virtual sets?

Re: TV shows using virtual sets now

Every year Stargate Studios puts out a virtual backlot video and it surprises me how many times shows use virtual sets and you'd never guess it. We think it's special effects only, but even the regular dramas use them a lot now. Here's last year's video:

Re: TV shows using virtual sets now

Are there any dramatic shows left on television that don't use virtual sets of some kind? The only shows that don't use them now are mostly sitcoms and comedies. I've seen shows where half of the set will be filled with virtual furniture to complete the look.

Most of Sanctuary's sets were green screen.

Most police/crime dramas still use real sets or backgrounds.

24 season 8 used virtual sets to fake New York in LA. Alot of the New York scenics was shot in Pre-Production and then inserted in post over green screen that was used during shooting.

Used a bit more then I would think, never really gave it much thought that green screen was needed for a street.

Painfully so at times, well, it was just part of the show, enjoyed it regardless.

That demo real was fantastic. I had no idea so many dramas used the green screen.

They should have left off the one at 3:00 (Ugly Betty?). That one looked obvious(like most of Sanctuary).

Using the track that lots of people associate with SFU is not helping. Now we'll all get emotional while watching!

Re: TV shows using virtual sets now

Interesting that even a simple location shot like that one from Parenthood is pricier than having a team of digital artists create an entire fake 'set' and tie in all the greenscreening, camera movement timing, etc.

I love those examples of greenscreens for mundane shots. The part with the guys running around 2:45 is fantastic

Wow...that blew my mind. For me... it really comes down to the lighting. Stuff like GoT looks so real to me even though I know they build a lot of sets... but the backgrounds and always look great because they light it so well.

Re: TV shows using virtual sets now

Really great. Think I appreciated it more since an episode of Castle recently feature some parts in Europe that were blatantly bad. By contrast, in Castle as well, there are scenes where I can tell it's an LA area street.

That video from Stargate studios was awesome. Thanks for posting. It's amazing how much green screen is used for current shows. I know it has to be used alot for shows being shot in Los Angeles faking other locations.

I don't think so. That one wasn't obvious at all and the most telling of all the clips. Such a simple set that was entirely green screened.
