Nathan for You (Comedy Central) -- Discussion Thread

This new Comedy Central show is pure genius. The premise is that Nathan (possibly the most boring person alive) a business school graduate will come consult for a business to help them out. The tactics he uses are brilliant and insane at the same time, and usually end up confusing or pissing off the customers (who aren't in on the gag).

For example, some of you probably remember the viral video which went around late last year where a pig saves a frightened goat stuck in the water:
<iframe width="640" height="360" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/g7WjrvG1GMk" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Turns out it was all a stunt by Nathan to drive business to a petting zoo by creating a "hero pig":
<iframe width="640" height="360" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/_2My_HOP-bw" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

That's not even the most ridiculous thing he's done, either. Last night he created the "perfect rebate" by requiring a rebate for a gas station to be hand delivered to the top of a mountain a couple hours away, requiring solving riddles and an overnight stay (all in the fine print). Shockingly he had several idiots willing to attempt it too... all in a quest to save $16 on gas.

I highly recommend checking it out if you haven't already. It might be the funniest show currently on TV.

I made it through the first three episodes, but the humor is very, very dry. The concept doesn't really work for me, because actual businesses seem to be the straight man in the setup. It's the type of skit that works best in short segments on a variety show or something. And some of it is plainly uncomfortable to watch.

It's true, he has the biggest deadpan ever. He shocked me last night when he actually cracked up a little bit when a gas station owner started talking about drinking his own grandson's urine. You're right the show is a little uncomfortable to watch at times, but I love comedy like that.

I really love this show so far. Haven't laughed that hard at something (Nathan's reaction to the gas station owner's admission) in a long time.

Loved the poop flavored yogurt segment in the first episode. The free pizza segment was also pretty damn funny.

It's more consistent than the other new show they've paired it with, The Ben Show. That show has a couple of funny segments, including animated crack stories from Todd Bridges.

After the Dumb Starbucks stunt earlier this year, another 8 episode summer run for the show (Tuesdays, 10:30p) began last week.

This season is off and running to a great start. Tonite's hackjob short film and the final reflective moments on that kiss as he left LA behind had me crying

A little too dry for me. I mean, it's good in short burst, but the whole thing just fell flat for me every minute it went on past the first 5.

OK, I know I'm a couple of years behind, but I just discovered this show on Hulu, and am starting to binge watch.

This was amazing. Unbelievably strange, and out of nowhere, but the entire exchange between the two of them had me laughing so hard it hurt to breathe.

Are you me? I also just started watching and this show is GREAT. I was shocked to see the pig rescues goat video because I remember watching it when it was viral (probably here in the "random videos" thread).

Yeah, this show is brutally awkward funny to me. Really like it.

Jack Black, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Jimmy Kimmel, Seth Rogen, Rob Lowe, Ellie Kemper, John Mayer, and Alexandra Daddario have all been photographed wearing a Summit Ice jacket.

"... sales of Summit Ice jackets has already exceeded $45,000, and all of those proceeds are going directly to the Vancouver Holocaust Education Centre."

This guy used to have a regular segment on the Canadian news satire show, This Hour Has 22 Minutes. Same hyper-deadpan schtick. I haven't watched this, but I think I'll give it a squiz.

Yeah, his current show isn't terribly different from his On Your Side segments, but I feel like he's honed in his style.

Ah yes, I remember that. I think, for me at least, Fielder is someone to enjoy in small doses, such as those old 3-4 minute segments on 22 Minutes. I tried watching the latest episode of Nathan For You last night (bar turned into live theatre), but I didn't find it compelling or funny enough to stick with it. The guy's act of poker-faced obtuseness is very good, but wearying at length.

Yeah, most episodes are split into 2 or 3 unrelated segments. The theater episode was... different. The only 1 segment full episode that I thought really worked was Dumb Starbucks.

Ellie Kemper's husband is the co-creator of Nathan For You. He was one of the creators of Eagleheart.

So glad other people are finally catching on to this show. The third season has been great so far. I wish it were cold enough here to buy a Summit Ice jacket.

The "Smokers Allowed" theater episode was maybe his best yet.

Just watched the one with the porn actors and the kid in the box.
The rest of the episode wasn't as funny, but the motorcycle idea actually seemed pretty good.
