Both the motel receptionist and the truck driver had the same thoughts as me regarding Kalinda and the new recruit

I don't know about weak, certainly not in this episode. Especially since the plot was about his father trying to get revenge on him for what happened in Washington even though they never quite outright said it, you could tell that was going on.

The Cary stuff is hilariously bad. Now his dad someone manages to get a 5Million dollar client for his firm, and then threatens to take it away unless Cary gets to be partner.
WTF - his dad is delusional.
So far so good with Kalinda and the new investigator.

That's what I understood would have happened, had Cary not gone around his dad at the new client.
Or am I totally wrong? It looked like his dad - brought in client, and then started to steer client away, and then while he was talking to Diane, and I think about to tell her that if Cary was a partner...
Cary comes in with Client having talked to him.
Then telling his dad that he would be dealing directly with the General Counsel, and no middle man, essentialy moving his dad out of the picture.

Cary's dad isn't a normal dad. This was established in an earlier episode. He's the kind of dad who trips his kid and yells, "Pay attention! Be prepared!" All in the name of preparing said kid for life. Not at all because he has a sadistic undercurrent and no clue how to really be supportive of -- and connect with -- his kid.
Cary's dad brought in the business knowing it would be a feather in Cary's cap. It susprised Cary as well given how his father is. Then just when everything's all champagne and caviar, he makes up the story about the client only wanting to deal with a partner (which Cary isn't). We know this is daddy dearest at work because the client has no problem working with Cary when Cary approaches the client directly. Cary knows what his father's about and doesn't play his game -- instead bypassing him. Then to let daddy dearest know he has learned his lessons well, he aces dad out of the picture (while keeping the client).
