Best film directed by Werner Herzog

Love alot of them but IMO nothing tops Aguirre, the Wrath of God.
I did not include his documentaries (which are also great) only his films.

Re: Best film directed by Werner Herzog

I'm a huge fan, and love almost everything he's ever done including his documentaries, but yeah Aquirre, the Wrath of God is his masterpiece. It's a top ten film of all-time for me. His two boxed sets are well worth picking up, and My Best Fiend in the Herzog/Kinski set is a must see.

I recently re-watched Lessons of Darkness and Encounters at the End of the World. Wow.

Aguirre. Favorite final shot of any film.

BTW, I gotta give some love for Invincible. I've hardly ever heard one peep about that movie, so I was greatly surprised at how much I enjoyed it.

Sadly, this the one film of his that I haven't seen. Heading over to Amazon to pick it up right now.

Re: Best film directed by Werner Herzog

Werner Herzog is one of my all time favorite directors. I've probably seen 80% of his total output (including documentaries), and have loved almost all of it, but I always find myself going back to Aguirre, The Wrath of God. It's his simplest, most direct film in many ways, and Kinski is a fucking force of nature.

I also highly recommend Woyzeck, which gets unjustly ignored when discussing the Herzog/Kinski collaborations, but might just be the second best after Aguirre.

Yes Woyzeck is fantastic, I also love Cobre Verde, Fitzcarraldo and Noseferatu.

His recent more "accessible" stuff like Rescue Dawn, Bad Lieutenant and My Son, My Son What Have Ye Done ...is still better than 90% of the crap pouring out of Hollywood,

Aguirre. As Mallet said, "It's his simplest, most direct film in many ways, and Kinski is a fucking force of nature." And it's direct in such a goddamn way.

Re: Best film directed by Werner Herzog

It's a toss-up between Aguirre and Stroszek for me, so I went with the one that gets fewer votes. I went through and watched most of his films that I hadn't yet seen back in 2006. One of the most rewarding endeavors I've embarked on. Special mention to La Soufrière, probably my favorite of his documentaries.

I voted Stroszek. Aguirre will probably dominate the poll but it doesn't have the dancing chicken.

Which Herzog films do we've on BD? I've Rescue Dawn and Bad Lieutenant. What others we got here in the US?

Encounters at the End of the World, Cave of Forgotten Dreams, and Into the Abyss. The only other Herzog BDs I'm aware of is the UK boxset which includes Encounters, Grizzly Man, White Diamond, La Soulfriere, and Flying Doctors of East Africa. So in other words, not much. And what is out there is mostly documentaries (which I probably like more than his fiction films).

I recently read somewhere that Anchor Bay's Herzog rights have expired. My hope is that Criterion would try to aquire them. I had also read that Herzog has set up a trust for the preservation of his films, so hopefully that means he will start restoring the older films for possible BDs.

Re: Best film directed by Werner Herzog

and I don't mean to turn this into a dvd discussion rather than a discussion of his films, but what is the best option for Scream of Stone? I've never seen it and I think this is the only one of his fiction features that's not available in the US. I see a few different imports on Amazon. Anyone have any recommendations? Also, is the film any good?

I picked Nosferatu, because it was the first Herzog film I ever saw and I've been to the site in the beginning of the film, where the mummies of Guanajuato are featured.

Awesome. We go to Guadalajara and then from there we stay in Guanajuato for a few days - right there in the center of town. It's great. I may go this year again.

Re: Best film directed by Werner Herzog

I have not seen all of his films by a long shot, but from the few I've seen I enjoyed Grizzly Man the most. I've never seen Aguirre: The Wrath of God, but judging from this poll it looks like I'm going to have to see it some time.

Re: Best film directed by Werner Herzog

I love Herzog and have seen a good amount of his stuff.

I'm not going to vote yet because I haven't seen several of the earlier movies. That being said, even after I see all the ones I still need to see I'll probably still vote for Aguirre: the Wrath if God because that is such an amazing flick and hard to beat in terms of quality.

I'm not a fan of his fiction work at all, except for The Enigma of Kasper Hauser. Lessons of Darkness, my favourite film of his, is mesmeric.

Re: Best film directed by Werner Herzog

So many great films, impossible to single out one, so I went with Nosferatu which I consider the most fun. In the Razzie thread, people were discussing how a lot of critcs and audience complained The Shining was "too slow". If that was true, then Nosferatu must have put them in a coma

Aguirre is his masterpiece, but another great film that wasn't even listed in the pole and is possibly his second best film is Little Dieter Needs to Fly which is the documentary about a downed aviator that he turned in to the (not very good) Rescue Dawn. Little Dieter is a must see.

I saw Rescue Dawn, immediately followed by Little Dieter, and I recommend doing the same for anybody who hasn't seen either.

For Herzog's best, it's probably gonna be Aguirre or Fitzcarraldo. I really enjoyed My Son My Son What Have Ye Done. On the documentary side I loved Encounters at the End of the World and my first Herzog movie Grizzly Man.
