Torment: Tides of Numenera kickstarter launches 3/6

new torment title :O

http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/03/...es-of-numenera

A billion years from now, the people of Earth live in the era of the Ninth World, an age built upon the vestiges of eight great civilizations before them. The flickering remnants of each once-great society – ancient nanotechnology, the data-web threading between still orbiting satellites, bioengineered monstrosities, creatures transplanted from distant stars, and myriad strange and wondrous devices – make up what people call Numenera.

Imagine this future humanity with all of its complexities, and among them a powerful man who spent centuries occupying human bodies and “skipping” from one to the next at will. Now imagine what would happen if one of those inhabited bodies was cast aside in this strange and alien Ninth World and suddenly became conscious, having never lived a day of its own?

Re: Torment: Tides of Numenera kickstarter launches 3/6

I was just coming here to post this!

It's from inXile, which is Brian Fargo's company -- the company behind Wasteland 2. And, of course, Fargo was the man behind Interplay, which developed the original Torment, though I don't know that Fargo was involved in Torment or that any of the Torment team is on this project.

Well, shit, Planescape: Torment was probably my favorite RPG back in the day. I guess I'm basically forced to Kickstart this. I hope Brian Fargo can deliver, because between this and Wasteland 2, the hype is overwhelming.

"Spiritual successor to Planescape: Torment" is now a crowded marketplace. Remember, Project Eternity is also coming out.

Project Eternity isn't related at all to Planescape: Torment, unless you count it's similarities with most old school PC RPG's.

If Torment: ToN is half as good as Planescape, I will die happy. I'm putting $10K of my own money to make it happen. http://kck.st/13F7hZm

Woops, there is the 2nd..I'm guessing it is Notch.

I supported 3 things so far on kickstarter..I think I am going to hold off until I get a few of those delivered...I loved the original game, but I will buy this the day it comes out...not over a year ahead of time.

I'm waiting on this one, too. It's not even just kickstarter caution, but we have yet to see how Wasteland 2 turns out.

Same here. Glad to see the continued enthusiasm for old school games though.

I wanted to wait, but I'm a sucker for collector's edition boxes.

Unfortunately for Gaming companies that try to create games that companies do not want to Publish, they have to work on Multiple projects at the same time stay afloat. I get the reasons why some of you are not contributing though.

Not really, since starting concurrent projects for a small company typically means splitting resources or bigger teams which costs more money. Getting the money from Kickstarter upfront kind of alleviates that, I guess. I don't think it really applies to inXile anyway, since the Kickstarter for Wasteland 2 was signficantly higher then what they wanted, so it doesn't seem like Torment has anything to do with getting more money to stay afloat.

They kind of explain it on their page that it's just maximing the use of existing idle resources.

We've discovered that the best way to create a deep and rich RPG is to begin the pre-production process long before the production team have finished their current project. If we waited to begin the design work for a large scale RPG until after the programming team has completed their work, our budget would increase by 50% or more. This would result in the hiring and firing process that happens all too often in our industry. We want to break that model and keep our great team together. This is why it makes sense for us to begin work on Torment now rather than later. The process has served us well in the past and allows us to bring you the best RPGs. If you have any concerns about our ability to deliver a great one, we encourage you to review our first look video of Wasteland 2 that was released just a few weeks ago.

Well I meant staying afloat by not firing half the company, as Torment and WL2 will have 2 completely different teams.

inXile has two different teams, but the games don't. The pre-production team that worked on WL2 has moved on to Torment. Then once the production team is finished with WL2 they will move to Torment. Hopefully they have some good teams, or else both games will suck.
