Petty Fest is notorious for that. Cyndi Lauper fell victim to this at Petty Fest in NYC this year. Pretty sure they even had the lyrics for her.

The all-time classic of this is Ella Fitzgerald's live version of Mack the Knife.

She's at some big jazz festival, trying to throw in a crowd-pleaser. She stumbles during the 2nd verse, and then realizes she has five or six more to go, and she'd better just make them up on the fly. So she makes up rhymes as she goes, all about how she's covering a song she barely knows, then scats for a while, then decides to do her Satchmo impression. It turned into a hit on its own, and it's been an influential version ever since. People like Micheal Buble quote her mistakes like they're part of the song, 'cause they almost are.

It's not an easy song to sing. I've tried it on guitar. The way he spaces out the phrasing of the lyrics is tricky. Doing it drunk while reading the lyrics results in the above catastrophe.

And I thought this was a thread devoted to The Replacements.
