Series Synopsis:
The word "Viking" has been synonymous with brutality, terror, and mystery ever since the first Norse warriors appeared along the coasts of England and France at the end of the eighth century. Their notoriety for barbarianism without pity was an important part of the mythology that grew up around them. And while Vikings are still characterized as such in popular culture, the reality is much more complex, visceral, and powerful than their reputation suggests. The extraordinary tales of the lives and epic adventures of these warriors are told in VIKINGS, a new nine-part scripted series premiering Sunday, March 3 at 10 p.m. (ET) on HISTORY(R). The drama portrays the world of these Dark Age raiders, traders, explorers - not from an outsider's view, but, through the eyes of Viking society. While VIKINGS is filled with conflict, warfare and bloodshed - for these were extreme times - it is a family saga at heart. It follows the adventures of Ragnar Lothbrok (Travis Fimmel, The Beast, Baytown Outlaws), a curious, compelling man who is always looking to break through barriers and discover new worlds to conquer. A young farmer and family man, Ragnar is deeply frustrated by the unadventurous policies of his local chieftain, Earl Haraldson (Gabriel Byrne, In Treatment, Usual Suspects, Millers Crossing), who continues to send his Vikings raiders east every summer, to the Baltic states and Russia, whose populations are as materially poor as themselves.
It will be a 9 episode 1st season.

History Channel’s Vikings is just as brutal as Game of Thrones
Meredith Woerner
History Channel's Vikings is just as brutal as Game of Thrones Vikings, the new scripted show from the History Channel is bonkers violent. It's like Game of Thrones without the nudity. Backed by historical research and lots of sexy Australian actors, this show is the channel's first venture into scripted drama. Thankfully writer Michael Hirst from Elizabeth, Elizabeth: The Golden Age, and The Tudors is manning this ship, which gives us a lot of hope for the series. We've got a great clip of some impressively bloody footage showcasing the way sexy TV Vikings slaughter their enemies! Still, the show doesn't glorify its violence too much.
Here's the official synopsis:

The series tells the sagas of Ragnar's band of Viking brothers and his family, as he rises to become King of the Viking tribes. As well as being a fearless warrior, Ragnar embodies the Norse traditions of devotion to the gods, legend has it that he was a direct descendant of Odin, the god of war and warriors.

Part of the Mich/MSU ESPN telecast on Tuesday night was sponsored by Vikings. Mike Tirico announced it during one point of the telecast which led commentator Dan Dakich bewildered, saying why are the Minnesota Vikings sponsoring a telecast of a Mich/MSU basketball game.
I'll probably check it out.

Vikings -- Series Premiere -- "Rites of Passage" -- 3/03/13
Synopsis:
In 8th century Scandinavia, Ragnar Lothbrok (Travis Fimmel) is a warrior and a farmer who dreams of finding riches by bucking the tradition of raiding to the east. Ragnar has been working in secret on a project that will turn the Viking world on its head. But first Ragnar must convince the leader of his community, the powerful Earl Haraldson (Gabriel Byrne), who is none too happy to share in the renown that this journey could bring to Ragnar if it's successful.
Series Synopsis:
The HISTORY® original series Vikings transports us to the brutal and mysterious world of Ragnar Lothbrok (Travis Fimmel), a Viking warrior and farmer who yearns to explore—and raid—the distant shores across the ocean. His ambition puts him at odds with local chieftain Earl Haraldson (Gabriel Byrne), who insists on sending his raiders to the impoverished east rather than the uncharted west. When Ragnar teams up with his boat builder friend Floki (Gustaf Skarsgard) to craft a new generation of intrepid ships capable of conquering the rough northern seas, the stage is set for conflict.
But for all its warfare and bloodshed, Vikings is also a story of family and brotherhood, capturing the love and affection between Ragnar and his wife, Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick), a respected warrior in her own right. It is the tale of Ragnar’s brother Rollo (Clive Standen), a fierce fighter who simmers with jealously; of Earl Haraldson’s wife Siggy (Jessalyn Gilsig), a dutiful beauty who may be less than loyal; and of the monk Athelstan (George Blagden), whose Christian morals clash with the Vikings’ pagan society. As ambition and innovation rattle a civilization, these characters will be put to the test—and their way of life will never be the same again.
Vikings was created and written by Michael Hirst (Elizabeth, The Tudors).
This is a 1 hour drama, not a documentary.

I haven't had the time to watch Vikings yet. But, 8.3M viewers watched last night counting the re-air.
Good start.

Anybody watch? The Bible that was on the two hours before The Vikings really did well, did it continue for The Vikings?

I thought it was ok... I need to see more. I can't believe that Vikings couldn't read or write and most of their history is from second persons point of view, very interesting.

Struck me as a drama more than a historical piece.
And did anyone notice the crazy dude, Floki, is Alex Skarsgard's brother?

Kind of slow, but I'll stick with it.
The opening sequence felt like Valhalla Rising-lite.

I liked it. I didn't think it was that slow. The hour moved by pretty fast.
I can't believe the lead of this show is Travis Fimmel, the same guy who played Patrick Swayze's partner on The Beast a few years ago. He actually looked pretty hardcore in the Vikings attire/hair.
I liked how casual the Vikings were about that execution. The guy committed murder, denied yet, but gave up and then said, okay I'll take a beheading. Then Gabriel Byrne's character said he ain't going to Vahalla. I guess that's the Vikings heaven?
I think the season looks like it has an interesting storyline going.
