Woman goes nowhere near kitchen to name Cloud Atlas and John Carter worst of 2012

Time Magazine's Worst Films Of 2012

10. One For The Money
9. The Odd Life Of Timothy Green
8. What To Expect When You're Expecting
7. Alex Cross
6. The Lorax
5. This Means War
4. Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter
3. Hyde Park On Hudson
2. John Carter
1. Cloud Atlas

It's unfortunate that the initial thread for Time's list started so ugly because it veered the subject towards something else when we should be focusing on the list itself. I think naming Cloud Atlas the worst movie of the year just pretty much outs you as someone who may not watch many movies. I think it's interesting and even though you may not like it, to call it the worst movie of the year is just so wrong headed on so many levels. John Carter is just the safe "it bombed so it must be horrible" choice that many mainstream publications put on worst of lists every year.

The other choice I don't agree with is AL:VH. I liked it well enough. Not gonna argue for its merits but I found it fun. The only other movie I saw was The Lorax from this list and I don't remember all that much from it. Strictly kids fare. The other movies, I just shrug my shoulders at. What do you think?

Of that list, I've seen the top two - John Carter and Cloud Atlas. I know people around here liked John Carter well enough and blame poor marketing for its failure but I thought it was a complete mess. Maybe not "worst of the year" but still terrible.

Cloud Atlas is decent and doesn't belong anywhere near a "worst of..." list.

I also rented This Means War the other day. Now thatbelongs on a "worst of the year" list.

Maybe the lady thats no where near the kitchen just has a different taste in movies than you. I don't understand why you would pick at her list, or any worst/best of list, when you only saw 4 of the films.

It's Time magazine. It's not like I'm picking on that girl who lives next door from me's worst of 2012 list. Plus I felt maybe some people might want to talk about this list since the other thread got closed. It's not like I'm the one that initially brought up the topic. Plus I'm posting this from my kitchen and I'm a man. Take that, sexism!

Re: Woman goes nowhere near kitchen to name Cloud Atlas and John Carter worst of 2012

Saw very few movies this year, the only one on that list I caught was John Carter which I enjoyed. I'd be curious to read the criticism that justified it's position on the list, did they find it too reminecent of previous sci-fi movies? There wasn't much original in John Carter, but as long as the tale is told well, I certainly don't mind hearing it again.

Re: Woman goes nowhere near kitchen to name Cloud Atlas and John Carter worst of 2012

I wanted to post this prior to the initial thread being locked, but as per Rotten Tomatoes, these are most of the currently fifty worst reviewed films of 2012:
  1. A Thousand Words: 0%
  2. One for the Money: 2% (#10 on Pols' list)
  3. A Little Bit of Heaven: 4%
  4. The Appariation: 4%
  5. Silent Hill: Revelations 3D: 6%
  6. The Cold Light of Day: 6%
  7. The Devil Inside: 7%
  8. The Babymakers: 9%
  9. Red Dawn: 11%
  10. House at the End of the Street: 11%
  11. Gone: 12%
  12. Alex Cross: 13% (#7 on Pols' list)
  13. Piranha 3DD: 13%
  14. The Watch: 17%
  15. Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance 3D: 18%
  16. For Greater Glory: 18%
  17. 360: 19%
  18. The Lucky One: 20%
  19. Chernobyl Diaries: 20%
  20. Taken 2: 21%
  21. That's My Boy: 21%
  22. Darling Companion: 21%
  23. Tyler Perry's Madea's Witness Protection: 21%
  24. What to Expect When You're Expecting: 22% (#8 on Pols' list)
  25. The Raven: 22%
  26. The Words: 22%
  27. October Baby: 22%
  28. The Samartian: 22%
  29. Paranormal Activity 4: 24%
  30. Act of Valor: 25%
  31. Seeking Justice: 25%
  32. Fun Size: 25%
  33. Mansome: 25%
  34. This Means War: 26% (#5 on Pols' list)
  35. Wrath of the Titans 3D: 26%
  36. Underworld: Awakening 3D: 26%
  37. The Oranges: 26%
  38. High School: 27%
  39. The Divide: 27%
  40. Project X: 28%
  41. Bel Ami: 28%
  42. The Vow: 29%
  43. Red Lights: 29%
  44. Peace, Love, and Misunderstandings: 29%
  45. Resident Evil: Retribution 3D: 29%
  46. Girl in Progress: 29%
  47. Total Recall: 30%
  48. Man on a Ledge: 32%
  49. Intruders: 32%
  50. Good Deeds: 32%
There's a few films missing, especially if they didn't hit a specific number of reviews, but we'll get to that in a minute.

For those playing at home:
  • 35 films on the list saw wide (500+ theater count) releases.
  • 9 sequels.
  • 5 3D-released films.
  • 4 made it on Pols' list.
  • 3 Tyler Perry-involved films.
  • 2 Kate Beckinsale-involved films.
  • 2 Nicolas Cage-involved films.
  • 2 Sam Worthington-involved films.
  • 2 Politics and World Inspired Talk-inspired Republican-esque films.
While I only saw ten films released on that list, the only one I would include in the bottom worst films of the year would include The Devil Inside, The Watch, and Piranha 3DD. In fact, if I had to publish a worst of list right this instant:
  1. The Devil Inside: 7%
  2. Snow White and the Huntsman: 49%
  3. Casa de mi Padre: 44%
  4. The Watch: 17%
  5. Cosmopolis: 65% (However, as awful and pretentious as the film is, it does have an amazing score by Howard Shore and Metric. This is also coming from someone who usually loves Cronenberg's work.)
  6. Nitro Circus 3D: The Movie: 6% (RT only has 17 reviews for it, thus why not counted above.)
  7. Piranha 3DD: 13%
  8. Savages: 51%
  9. Detention: 37%
  10. The Amazing Spider-man: 73% (My thoughts are in the official review thread for those who are curious.)
Now, go ahead, you can call me whatever you want. Just don't call me a ****, fucking joke, rotten, and a prick as we already covered that in the last thread. At least seven out of those ten films were not liked by a majority of audiences who saw the film. However, that means I wouldn't count films like Fun Size, Paranormal Activity 4, Project X, Red Dawn, Underworld: Awakening, and a few others as the absolute worst of the year. However, here's the kicker:

As per Rotten Tomatoes, Pols as a professional film critic, has only reviewed 72 films this year. As a ****/fucking joke/prick/rotten individual, I've seen over 75 films in theaters (thanks MoviePass!) as per my Letterboxd tracking and I still have nearly a month left. If there were films that Pols missed out on because they didn't "interest" her and thus why they're missing from this list, well she's really not a critic. I saw quite a few films that didn't interest me due to being at the mercy of family, friends, or my wife. Some of those made it on my list, others didn't.

I saw six of your top 10 worst, Matthew. The Watch and Devil Inside I'd agree were atrocious.

My worst of the year (so far) out of about 58 movies. If I had to squeeze one more in there, it would be This Means War.

The Cold Light of Day
Wrath of the Titans
The Campaign
Playing for Keeps

I didn't mind 'The Devil Inside' either - I thought 'The Watch' was the dumbest waste of time movie I sat through this year. 'The Bourne Legacy' was also a clusterfuck and really was an insult to it's fanbase.

A tough call between John Carter and Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance as the year's worst for me.

While I liked it, I didn't go in expecting Dylan McDermott to be the best part of the film.

Agreed. Anytime you have to break up watching a film over two or three sessions you know it's pretty bad. Other than the score it was nearly unwatchable for me.

Wow, sorry to hear that. I'd rather stick to films I think I'm going to like, vs watching nearly everything and only liking 1 out of 3. There's just not enough time for that. Is saying no thank-you or suggesting something else not an option?
