Del Toro Confirmed For "Crimson Peak"

By Garth Franklin Monday
December 3rd 2012 11:03PM

Guillermo Del Toro looks to have finally settled on his post-"Pacific Rim" project - the haunted house thriller "Crimson Peak".

Legendary Pictures, which is producing 'Rim', has closed a deal with the filmmaker to pick up the project from Universal Pictures where it was originally setup. Universal retains an option to also finance at a later date.

Lucinda Coxon has been hired to rewrite del Toro and Matthew Robbins’ script.

Del Toro says the project is a very set-oriented, contemporary take on classic ghost story films like the original "The Haunting" and "The Innocents".

Shooting aims to begin February 2014 after del Toro has wrapped work on both 'Rim', the pilot for "The Strain" series at FX, and voice work on his stop-motion animated Pinocchio movie.

Del Toro also says Legendary is keen on helping him move forward with his long-running dream project - the adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft's "At the Mountains of Madness".

Nice to hear "del Toro" and "confirmed" in a press release for once.

Based on comments I've read him say regarding this film, it should be welcomed by fans of old-school, gothic horror.

Hopefully this turns out better than Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark, which I couldn't even get through. With him helming I'm confident it will.

But you don't have the same confidence for "Pacific Rim"?

Partly subject matter, partly that awful "viral video" which I originally thought was a trailer.

BREAKING: Benedict Cumberbatch, Jessica Chastain, Emma Stone and Charlie Hunnam have signed on to star in Legendary Pictures’ haunted house thriller Crimson Peak, which will be the next movie to be directed by Guillermo del Toro and is set to begin shooting in January 2014. Del Toro originally wrote the ghost story script with frequent collaborator Matthew Robbins and had set it up at Universal; he now is giving it a rewrite with Lucinda Coxon. Legendary will produce and be a participating financing partner, with Universal retaining an option to also finance at a later date. Legendary is also behind del Toro’s Pacific Rim, which is due out July 12 via Warner Bros. Warners will likely distribute Crimson Peak via its deal with Legendary.

Del Toro previously told Deadline that Crimson Peak is best described as “a very set-oriented, classical but at the same time modern take on the ghost story. It will allow me to play with the conventions of the genre I know and love, and at the same time subvert the old rules.”

Benedict Cumberbatch has dropped out of Guillermo Del Toro‘s gothic horror pic Crimson Peak, about a woman who discovers that her new husband is not who he claims to be. Sources say Cumberbatch’s very recent exit is not due to scheduling conflicts with the Legendary Pictures production, which is slated to begin next February. The Star Trek: Into Darkness thesp’s upcoming slate includes 12 Years A Slave, August: Osage County, and The Fifth Estate.

Bummer. I wonder what happened. If it ain't scheduling problems then he just decided no on a horror flick.

Here's Jessica Chastain arriving in Canada for the shoot. She doesn't travel light.

That's an appropriate time to smile for a picture. She can fight Spider-Man later.

It was off her FB fan page. She said she's excited to go work with Del Toro, so we know she's devoted.
