Far Cry 3 (December 4)

I haven't seen a thread about this game yet and the search engine doesn't like the search terms. That being said this game got a 10 from eurogamer which is quite impressive and also high praise from numerous other sites. This looks like something worth playing.

Re: Far Cry 3 (December 4)

I saw an ad for this with the quote "It's like Skyrim with guns!"

The reviews sound great, though. This one is going on my list.

Re: Far Cry 3 (December 4)

I've never played the first two games, but the ten-minute introduction video released today piqued my interest. So, without further ado:

1. Is it a "day one" purchase, or should I wait for a price drop? Based upon price tracking, it seems Far Cry 2 dropped to $35 - $40 within weeks of its original release.
2. Should I go for the 360 or PC edition? It's a FPS, so I'm clearly not getting it for the PS3.

Re: Far Cry 3 (December 4)

It is Ubisoft is it not? They are notorious for quick price drops.

That being said, I still plan to get it day one.

As for which platform to play it on, I'm sure the majority would say PC if your system can handle it. I remember I played the first game on a PC when it came out and it looked great.

My PC can run it well but it's 360 for me. Not much of a PC gamer besides WoW and I'm even on hiatus from that.

If you pick it up from a Best Buy or the like there is a good chance you will be able to price match the sale price as it will be within their matching window.

Initial impressions anyone? Still on the fence as to whether or not to buy this. Looks really good, but last thing I need now is another game.

I'm waiting to hear people's thoughts as well. Although I could never get into FC 2, some of the footage of this game looks pretty cool. Strangely, when I looked at Amazon today it said "ships in 8-9 days", and that was from amazon itself, not a third party seller.

All I know about this game is I have a friend on facebook who won't shut up about the fact that he worked on this game, and I couldn't be more stoked for him.

Re: Far Cry 3 (December 4)

I have yet to read a bad review of this game anywhere. Pretty much everything I've seen says its GOTY material. The only reason I haven't picked it up is because it seems like a game you can spend a ton of time in, and I have games I bought at launch and haven't even opened yet (*cough* Dishonored)

Re: Far Cry 3 (December 4)

I have been skeptical of good press in the gaming industry as of late. There were enough negative user reviews on meta critic to make me think about it.

It sure sounds like something I'd love, but something as simple as bland AI can ruin a game like this for me.

Re: Far Cry 3 (December 4)

I played around with it for an hour and I thought it was great.

I had a funny thing happen. I was hiding in some brush waiting to distract a guard, and a jeep driven by other guards came cruising by and just ran him over.

Mission complete

Re: Far Cry 3 (December 4)

Yeah it's a good looking game, too. Also, I noticed no frame rate issues (I installed it) and no bugs whatsoever (knock on wood).

I think I did the first few story missions, but exploring is a lot of fun. The "like Skyrim with guns" comparison was funny. When you level up, it even makes a kind of noise like Skyrim did

Re: Far Cry 3 (December 4)

Classic case of terrible release date. After Black Friday I'm almost literally drowning in new games and a week later, there's another full price game out? And one from Ubisoft no less? Even if I didn't loathe Far Cry 2 (which I did), I think I could probably wait for it to drop. Quickly. But I'll certainly pick it up later.

Re: Far Cry 3 (December 4)

I loved it until I captured all the strongholds and climbed all the towers. Now there's nothing to do. I tried to like the Story portion of the game, but it has everything I hate: quick time events, unskippable cut scenes and linear missions.

Re: Far Cry 3 (December 4)

I really wanted to like the first two Far Crys but, while there was a lot to like, they giant pains in my ass. The first one had AI that was near omniscient and the 2nd had that in addition to quick re-spawns and weapons breaking far too soon. They weren't "challenging", they were just annoying. I hope this one avoids that.

Sheesh, you must play a lot. I've only climbed four of the eighteen towers and didn't capture any strongholds besides the tutorial ones.

But I do a bunch of exploring.

Anyhow, I knew the bug/freeze comment would bite me in the ass. I was playing earlier, one of those trials things or whatever, and it constantly stuttered in the same place (I had to re-do the challenge a few times because I wanted a higher score) and then froze after I completed it.

I had only been playing maybe 30 minutes. Hopefully this won't be a habit, but I'm starting to wonder if it's my Xbox that's taking a dump. It's only a couple of years old, the Elite 250gb one that came with Kinect.

Yeah, I basically would climb a tower and then capture any strongholds within that map area. It was slow going at first but as you unlock more weapons and learn the ai it got easier and faster. My word of advice: don't capture all the strongholds or all opposition on the island disappears. Leaving you with nothing but friendlies and animals. The natives always mention something about the pirates counterattacking, but it never happens.

Re: Far Cry 3 (December 4)

It's a lot of fun, but man, the interface is horrible on PC, you can tell they didn't bother changing any of it for a mouse/keyboard. I'm also really hating the save system. A game like this should have quick save/load.

Re: Far Cry 3 (December 4)

Yeah the save system sucks especially when you die and you're sent back to a safe house or tower that's far from where you were.

A few other observations:

The marksman, knife, etc challenges suck. Too difficult

Jason is supposed to be a badass but he's like ED-209 trying to navigate stairs when he's on a mountain and trying to get down a hill. I think I died more falling off a cliff than anything.

I'm playing on Survivor mode because I like a challenge but it's pretty steep so far.
