Re: Another List: Time Magazine's Top 100 Games
You've almost worn me down to buying the game with your multi-thread enthusiasm for Dark Souls. However, considering how much I suck at games in general, how much I hate boss battles, and how hard that game is supposed to be, it still feels like a bad idea.
Reading that list brought back buried memories of playing Hunt the Wumpus on my TI-99/4a. I'm sure that in the next couple of days I'll spend too much time looking up TI-99 nostalgia sites.

I am sure I get on alot of people's nerves and I apologize. However that game should be on this list for sure.
If you hate boss battles, you probably want to steer clear of Dark Souls. They are a major part of the game and they are unforgiving. I am opposite of you, I love boss fights always have always will. Been killing bosses since the good ole NES games. There is just something exhilarating about getting to the end of a level knowing you have got a larger than life boss that is standing in your way. Dark Souls gets everything right in my opinion. It is a near perfect game other than some technical hiccups and the summoning process can be frustrating.
If you can get it for cheap, try it out. It may change your mind about boss fights. The game is difficult, but it is quite manageable once you get the hang of the combat. It isn't as tough as it is made out to be.
In another thread here, someone said Target was selling DS for $10 -- check it out.

Not at all. It's that kind of enthusiasm for games on this site that led me to things like Bulletstorm and Enslaved. I may end up getting Dark Souls soon just out of sheer curiosity. At least with that game, I'd know it was supposed to be hard, instead of constantly feeling like an idiot for endlessly failing at boss bottles in most games.

you will die alot. we all do. after 300 hours of game time, i still die alot. not as much, but still alot.
if you get it, please make the decision to stick with it for a few hours even if you are frustrated with it. you will find that once you get the hang of it you will be hooked.
also check the net for a listing of what order you should do certain areas. That will help take out alot of unnecessary frustration. At the beginning you have 3 immediate options of places you can go. 2 are basically suicide that early in the game.
i will help you in anyway i can. i have a Dark Souls youtube channel of videos I made playing the game. http://www.youtube.com/user/GreyWolfSifDCA

I remember that game. I had a few T-99 games that I had to load from cassette tape. Now those were the days.

The "killed by Wumpus" screen used to scare the hell out of me as a kid. It was like an early version of one of those "monster face suddenly pops up when you're concentrating on the screen" prank games/vids. It actually made the whole experience pretty intense because I was legitimately scared to make a false step. In a way this was a really early version of "survival horror".

Like many of these lists, they picked a lot of games that were considered groundbreaking, influential, and/or unique as opposed to "the best." I'm not sure I'd say that about the Zelda games besides the first one, but yeah, TOOT gets so much critical praise that it seems strange to leave it off.

That's why I was a little surprised...I know these lists mean nothing at all, but I feel like Ocarina of Time was pretty influential. And that's not even my favorite Zelda of the 90's!

TOoT was extremely polished but was really in no way revolutionary so it really isn't that surprising. The game when you get down to it is very similar to Super Mario 64, just less repetitive and more fun. With that said, Mario 64 is the one that should be on that list.
