I cooked my PS3 in the oven... and it WORKS!
So last week I got the dreaded YLOD and figured I'd either have to drop $150 to get it fixed, or $200 on black friday for a new system. After some Googling (and then some searching on the Internet ) I came across this article and decided I had nothing to lose:

After completing all the steps and reassembling my system, I am now back in business!
Just thought I'd post this for anyone who might run into this problem and didn't know about this solution. There's no guarantee how long it will last, but it's better than nothing.

I have 3 PS3 systems at home (mostly for BD functionality) and two of them are original fat systems --- I've yet to get the YLOD (knock on wood) but I'd probably try this too.

Lol, I can make money easier than I could do all that. Neat trick though.

If you go through Sony's repair site, they'll offer you a refurb Slim for $99 versus the $150 to repair the fatty. I did that about 2 months ago. The new slim works like a champ.

Refurb, but no less scary than taking back a refurb YLOD fatty. Mine looked brand new. Of course the innards are a mystery but saving $50 and getting the quiet slim was a better proposition, IMO. My launch fatty was louder than any 360 I ever owned. It rendered it impossible to enjoy watching movies it was so distracting.

With the new, better thermal paste (I used Tuniq TX-2) my launch day PS3 was running completely silent last night while playing MW3.
