Pretty hard to compare without knowing what it sounded like before the accident, not a complaint, just a fact. That may be the normal sound of the disc spinning. With the case off, it would be louder and sound weird. Since it does spin, I would guess the laser mechanism got knocked out of alignment. Usually you can hear the laser moving, too. Not unlike a hard drive noise. I can't in this case. Or, the spindle could be out of alignment, it does sound maybe a little wobbly. In which case the laser can't track on it, either.
Similar replacement appears to be $80 at Walmart, I'm guessing a repair job would start over $100. Actually, a refurb of this model is $68-70. Just noticed woot.com happens to be selling what looks like a wifi version of this today. $75. Refurb, of course.
Cost of a family: ever increasing. I could tell stories.....
