Elementary (CBS) -- Season 1 Thread -- (Sherlock Holmes update) -- 9/27/12
Synopsis:
ELEMENTARY stars Jonny Lee Miller as detective Sherlock Holmes and Lucy Liu as Dr. Joan Watson in a modern-day drama about a crime-solving duo that cracks the NYPD's most impossible cases. Following his fall from grace in London and a stint in rehab, eccentric Sherlock escapes to Manhattan where his wealthy father forces him to live with his worst nightmare - a sober companion, Dr. Watson. A successful surgeon until she lost a patient and her license three years ago, Watson views her current job as another opportunity to help people, as well as paying a penance. However, the restless Sherlock is nothing like her previous clients. He informs her that none of her expertise as an addiction specialist applies to him and he's devised his own post-rehab regimen - resuming his work as a police consultant in New York City. Watson has no choice but to accompany her irascible new charge on his jobs. But Sherlock finds her medical background helpful, and Watson realizes she has a knack for playing investigator. Sherlock's police contact, Capt. Tobias "Toby" Gregson, knows from previous experience working with Scotland Yard that Sherlock is brilliant at closing cases, and welcomes him as part of the team. With the mischievous Sherlock Holmes now running free in New York solving crime, it's simple deduction that he's going to need someone to keep him grounded, and it's elementary that it's a job for Watson.

No, it's a new network drama. Nothing to do whatsoever with the BBC. Right now it has a 13 episode order with the possibility of more depending on how it does. It has Person of Interest as a lead-in, I'm sure it will do well enough to get a full season.

Jonny Lee Miller? Yeah this won't make it to 13.
I like Liu, the idea and the similarities to the BBC Sherlock, so we'll see how it turns out. Hopefully it doesn't come off as a full on generic procedural.

I wish Lucy Liu would have stayed on Southland. She was so good on it. But I get why she bolted for this gig. It's a bigger payday, a major network drama on a really high profile night and she's the co-lead.
I'm not a huge fan of Jonny Lee Miller. I didn't like him on Smith and I didn't really care for Eli Stone. But I'll reserve judgment until I see this tonight or tomorrow.

I love Liu but I always think it's sort of sad when a star moves down to network TV.
I'll definately check it out for Liu alone but the CBS thing scares me again.

I watched this and thought it was good, not great but definitely better than expected. I've always liked Johnny Lee Miller from his start in Hackers to Eli Stone (Love that show) and Lucy Liu does a surprising tun in this where she's plays more of a vulnerable character than she has in other roles. It's different enough from the BBC show to stand on it's own and from the pilot, I'm going to stick with it.

But she started on network TV, so it's a good fit. I mean who doesn't remember her breakout debut on Beverly Hills, 90210?

The wording of the synopsis sounds goofy, but i am in for Liu. I would watch her act out the phone book and would relish the opportunity to make her googly eye level. Stuy alum represent.
She has a decent martial arts background and i would like to see her in something like Nikita, action-y and exciting. i kinda wish she get the nod instead of Maggie Q.
then i think of ecks versus sever and sober up.

Didn't Lucy Liu often butt heads with Bill Murray on the set of Charlie's Angels due to him wanting to improvise his lines? I guess they got into such fierce confrontations Bill opted out of the sequel.

Here's another version of that same story: http://themovieblog.com/2008/the-rea...lies-angels-2/
Murray apparently hates McG with a passion as well.

I know a Lucy Liu (damn, that is one popular name), she's way hotter than this "actress".

Any impressions? I simply can't watch another Sherlock adaptation after Benedict Cumberbatch's revelatory turn on the BBC version of Sherlock, but I'm still curious what everyone else thought of this.

Off to a solid start, 3.1 demo rating, 13.2m viewers. It actually increased 18 - 49 viewers vs. lead-in Person of Interest.

I know what you mean. I did like it ehough as it was different but I am constantly comparing JLM's Sherlock to the BBC version (unfairly). I am going to give it a few episodes to grow on me. I am mostly interested in if he gets a series "villian" and how dark the cases get. This one wasn't very dark.

I've seen people say it's unfair to compare the shows, but I don't agree. They're both mining the same source material, so I think it's only natural to compare Elementary and Sherlock (along with the RDJ Holmes movies). Elementary was fine, but nothing special, and Sherlock's excellence hurts my perception of Elementary all the more. While JLM was fine, he really felt like another PSYCH/Mentalist style sleuth, whereas Benedict's Sherlock feels very rich and original to me.
I greatly prefer how Sherlock approached Holmes' social ineptitude and borderline psychotic nature. So far Elementary presents Holmes as a kind of quirky dude. But it's only been one ep. I too am curious to see how they'll tackle Moriarty. I don't think it's fair to write this show off after just one ep, but I don't know how long Elementary will be able to keep my attention.
