Weekend Box Office (10/19 - 10/21): Paranormal Activity 4 Has Already Made a Profit

Looks like Paranormal Activity 4 will score around $4.5 million right out of the gate. That’s in line with Hollywood’s estimates for a $35M-$40M opening weekend which mirrors PA2‘s hefty debut of $40.7M rather than PA3‘s even huger release of $52.6M. Meanwhile, MovieTickets.com reports that its domestic box office advance ticket sales for Paranormal Activity 4 accounted for over 65% of all transactions for Thursday. And nearly 5% of yesterday’s total sales are coming from moviegoers who want to see the film in IMAX. Insiders also tell me that early international grosses from Thursday openings in Australia and Germany are higher than PA2 or PA3. “Great results for a franchise that has stayed true to its roots and its microbudgeted approach!,” an exec gushes. The franchise has been kept on a tight budget and the back end deals have not been changed. What began as a $70,000 sleeper still costs only $5M now. Overall, the three Paranormal Activity installments have earned over $576 million worldwide on a combined budget of a little over $8M. Yowza! By the way, this is Paramount’s first fictional live-action nationwide release since The Dictator in May. That’s because the studio pushed off this summer’s scheduled release of G.I. Joe 2 to 2013 in order to revamp the pic.
For those keeping track at home:
  • Paranormal Activity 2 did $6.3 million during its late night showings leading to a $40.7M weekend.
  • Paranormal Activity 3 did $8 million during its late night shows leading to a $52M opening weekend.
PA4 is already down 45% from where PA3 opened. Based upon that logic, PA4 would have trouble crossing the $30M barrier this weekend. PA3 had a fantastic trailer and great word of mouth coming out of the late night shows. Paramount's marketing campaign for PA4 has been on auto pilot and word of mouth coming out of the late night shows has been mostly negative. This might be the point where the audience begins to turn against the franchise. However, Paramount can keep pumping out these films as they don't cost more than $5M to produce and less than $10M to advertise and market. As long as they gross more than $30M domestically, Paramount will still push them out.

... and sometime next year, we'll get both Paranormal Activity 5 and a Mexican-themed spin-off!

A drive-in somewhat near me was advertising for a double bill of Paranormal Activity 5 w/ Sinister, and I thought "Meh, like anyone will notice or care".

I'm curious to see this one, since I saw all the others in theaters, but the campaigning is so lazy. It's like Saw all over again - "Hey, here's another movie from a franchise you know, now with a larger number!" Way to sell it, guys.

HAHA. I'm sure others said this about Saw as well. But with international sales on the raise for the franchise and it's still on par with what part 2 made, I don't see much of an end in sight. Add on that this film answered zero questions and left more questions plus they can go back to the well and do the tapes at the end of Part 3, there may never be an end in sight in the foreseeable future.

PA3 actually made more domestically than overseas. PA2 made more internationally, but its domestic gross was the lowest of the franchise.

Should have clarified that better. With PA4 probably going to gross the highest in international sales and PA4 making on par with what PA2 did domestic, there really is no reason to stop anytime soon.

Deadline.com is currently reporting PA4 with a $17M Friday gross for a $35M domestic opening weekend. Combined with international grosses (it opened in 33 other markets this weekend), it's looking at $60M worldwide for the three days.

For anyone concerned about another Alex Cross film, it has a $5M Friday with the looks of a $15M domestic weekend.

It is also being reported that Argo will only drop 7-10% incredible hold for that movie. Looks like 17.5-18 million this weekend.

Argo will surely be in the 10 best motion pictures of the year at the Oscars, I also expect Flight to be in there.

it can get there. Budget was $44.5 milliion. So add in whatever the rest of the world gave it..it at least got it's budget back. We'll see how far it goes beyond that though.

I would be very curious seeing a movie that doesn't exist yet. Would it just be a blank screen with a title card that says use your imagination here? If so, I'm adding in ghost rape finally. Also, ghost puppies because they're cute.

I saw Argo my favorite part is when Ben Affleck puts that dude in the woodchipper.

It cost $35 million to make. It'll get a sequel.

All the holdovers did well, surprised to see the small drop for Seven Psychopaths and Here Comes the Boom, though both are decidedly box office duds (though I don't think there was much expectation for Psychopaths).

I have still never seen any sort of ad for Pitch Perfect.

Looper is Rian Johnson's first hit.
