I just bought a pair of JBL S310 Floorstanding Speakers and I want to purchase some speaker stands to raise them a bit to ear level. Any suggestions on a particular brand or model? Inexpensive stands would be great!

This may not be your style, but some cinder blocks would work fine and they are cheap

I heard that wood is not desirable for a stand but a nice, thick metal will transfer most of the vibrational energies to the ground. Will the cinder block do the same job?

Um, a stupid questions if you would...I can get cinder block at Home Depot, correct?

Concrete (cinder) blocks will work just fine. An ieal stand is one that doesn't resonate with the speaker's vibrations, and is massive.

Hard to get much more massive than concrete...

(since metal stands aren't solid, that is...)

A more attractive opiton I've seen mentioned is architectural concrete columns. But, they're going to cost significantly more than the $2.50 per speaker that a concrete block would.

...and yeah, you can get them at home depot (or any other building center)

i recently went to radioishack (yeah i know), and picked up several pairs of stands that were on clearance for $29/pair. These stands are black with a triangle base and work very nicely for the money.

Gasp! Radioshack?!.....well I shouldn't talk because I'm getting an SPL meter later this week from them.

I'll go ahead with the cinder block idea, one per speaker since I only need to raise them about a foot off the ground.

I have the Ultimate Foundations by Sanus, they mostly make bookshelf type stands. But I did find one on their page for large speakers http://www.sanus.com/cgi-bin/web_sto...=9792951_12435

Not sure if it is what your after, but their stands a awesome. I have mine filled with sand and they are quite heavy and they do add to the sound of the speaker.

For my rears (Infinity SM-65) I have a pair of Lovan stands, there are 3 metal posts on each stand and I filled them with sand.
