For People who tell other people they HATE Movie Musicals...

For those people out there who tell other people that they HATE movie musicals, there has got to be at least one movie musical that you love (mostly because you saw it over and over again as a kid, but not necessarily)…

And I'm not really talking about Walt Disney movies, either, like "Mary Poppins" or "Pete's Dragon," but if you like them and nothing else, then you can include them.

Tell us which it is!

I am one of those "people," but I love My Fair Lady with Rex Harrison. Saw it over and over again growing up - it was on HBO (during the early 80s, when there was only ONE HBO channel).

I love movies of all kinds, including the musical. But to go along with the thread, I find that a ton of the people that hate the genre almost always love "Little Shop of Horrors".

Which? Was the Jack Nicholson one also a musical? (never really saw it.)

The awesome 1986 musical...

I believe that one is an adaptation of the off-broadway musical, which was itself based on the 1960 Roger Corman flick, which was not a musical (I don't think, but I've never watched it).

Re: For People who tell other people they HATE Movie Musicals...

I've seen the Nicholson LSoH, it was not a musical.

I'm not a big fan of musicals, but that's not to say that I don't like some. My main gripe is that I'm taken out of the movie when characters start to sing, I don't know how to relate to them. I'm fine with a few songs but after a while I just want the characters to talk. Dreamgirls was a recent example where I was fine with it for the first half, but then it just kept going, song after song after song.

Re: For People who tell other people they HATE Movie Musicals...

I enjoy musicals to a degree.

I think that Tommy can be enjoyed any time of the day. I first caught it on TCM five-or-so years ago and was mesmerized. I love this movie. I like the album to a lesser degree (which isn't the popular opinion among The Who fans).

I have little understanding of tone, and have heard a lot of criticism about Reed and Nicholson's singing.

I like musicals so I guess I'll sit here and watch the haters name a musical.

For many, many years I couldn't stand musicals. I am slowly warming up to them. The Footloose remake was good.

I liked this musical:

Re: For People who tell other people they HATE Movie Musicals...

Most musicals don't do anything for me. Mainly I don't like the music in most of these, so that's kinda of important. Also I'm more of a fan of darker films, so the happy happy, big smile song and dance movies turn me off immediately.

So yeah, I'll cast a second vote for Dancer in the Dark. That's a movie that's so sad it becomes impressive at a certain point. And it's use of music was very creative: all the numbers are the protagonist daydreaming of rhythmic sounds sparking songs.

I also dearly love The Lion King, the only Disney animated film I ever cared for. But again, it's dark.

I can't speak for the remake, cause I never saw it (wouldn't mind, if it came on for free)...but the original Footloose I wouldn't classify as a Movie Musical, and I'll tell why not:

the actors didn't break out "singing."

They were only dancing. The songs were in the background, as if they were coming out of somebody's boom-box.

Does that make sense?

Yeah, to me there is a huge difference between an actual "musical" and just a movie about music.

The West Side Story = Musical

Walk the Line = Movie about music

Re: For People who tell other people they HATE Movie Musicals...

I loved "Pete's Dragon" as a kid, but probably haven't seen it in like 25 years. It's one of those movies I don't really want to revisit because I'm guessing I won't like it now and it'll make me feel bad. I'd rather just remember it as being awesome. Kind of like remembering the hot chick from your high school as a hot chick and not what she is now, which is a 35 year old mother of 3 with an ass the size of Idaho.

However, not that long ago I found "Lambert the Sheepish Lion" on youtube. It's just an 8 minute long Disney movie that I watched over and over as a very young kid. I'm happy to say I enjoyed it just as much now, as a 32 year old man, as I did as a 5 year old kid.

Why can't Mary Poppins be used as an example? It's fantastic and just as much a musical as Chicago or Little Shop of Horrors.

Not a big fan of the genre but some I do enjoy:

The Music Man
South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut
Team America: World Police
Rock of Ages

and if you count Disney movies some include:

Aladdin
Beauty and the Beast
The Lion King

Grease, because I've seen it way too many times since a first viewing in the theater and it's kinda catchy.

Ugh.. how can I forget...Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

Friggin' love The Sound of Music. And although a bit dark for my tastes, I did actually enjoy Sweeney Todd...

Sweeney Todd is another one where I got song'd out, I was praying for dialogue by the end.

Wizard of Oz was the one that immediately came to mind, but I love Grease.

I agree on Rock of Ages, but Moulin Rouge works despite itself.
