So, I was looking up the price of a record on ebay just now and came across this auction:

That seems nuts for a NOFX record. It got me to thinking, what is the most outrageous price that you have seen a record sold.

At the other extreme. I was in Cape Town (Sth Africa) earlier this year and in a major CD store. They had The Tourists Greatest (Dave Stewart and Annie Lennox's pre-Eurythmics band) for I think about 8 rand - which is like $1 Aust Dollar so I thought OK. At the checkout is scanned for 1 Sth African cent!!! That made it about one-eighth of an Aussie cent! LOL

I paid $2,869 for a first pressing of Meet The Beatles that was in mint condition in november thats the most ive ever seen for a record that I was actually interested in. The most insane one I saw was at an auction in 2010 and it was for a copy of Elvis's first single on sun records its sold for 8 thousand something

I picked up a bunch of Beatles vinyl for $1 apiece at a garage sale when I was in high school. My classmate whose dad sold them to me was so mad.

They're probably somewhere in storage at my parents' place. Any value in those records today?

Depends. Most likely not though. They pressed a shitload of Beatles records. A decent record store should give you $4-$8 a piece as long as they're in good shape.

I work at a record store and Beatles records come in nearly every day.

I talked to a guy I know who owns a record store in LA about this. He sold a Bob Dylan acetate album for $10,000 once.

A lot of Third Man Records titles can fetch pretty high prices ($100 and up) on eBay. Particularly ones that are from the vault series but I guess those make some sense as they're membership exclusive titles. Pearl Jam stuff can get pretty high too.

I saw a Casino Royale vinyl soundtrack in the window of some NYC record store with a tag on it for $600. This was about the time in the 90s that it was declared an audiophile album by some stereo magazine. I'd had the CD for 6-7 years at that point. I picked up a vinyl copy on eBay 3 years later for $20. Have purchased a CD reissue that's a needle drop with pitch correction and another vinyl copy since then. Never figured out if the $600 copy was the equivalent of a first print or what.

I've seen a second stage Beatles Yesterday and Today, still in plastic, go for thousands on Ebay. I was surprised to learn that the second stage (unpeeled) albums now go for more than the original butcher covers. It's not so much crazy prices but because of supply and demand for a collectible. Nobody's buying it for the music.

I do wonder if the price of Beatles memorabilia will peak soon. The generation of people whose lives were touched by the Beatles are getting old and will be less likely to want to accumulate stuff. In 15-20 years they'll be rapidly dying off. How valuable is Glenn Miller memorabilia these days?

I thought the same thing when I read how much MR Round paid for that record. There are some versions of that LP that are worth thousands but most are only worth around a hundred.

I'm pretty sure it's real. There is also a mystery box for $5 million. I think they really have the refrigerators loaded with stuff but I think that if someone does actually buy the mystery box they would just figure it out and put something together.

the difference is that you still see 20-30 year old Beatle fans. I'm not saying there aren't 20-30 year old Glenn Miller fans but they certainly aren't as prominent as "post-Lennon murder birth" Beatles fans.

It's very easy for young people to be exposed to the Beatles. Pop culture still celebrates them to this day. Glenn Miller? Not so much.

Yep. You don't see a lot of Glenn Miller fans who weren't around in his day. You see people born 20 years after The Beatles broke up who love their music. They are going to be for music what something like Citizen Kane or The Wizard Of Oz are for cinema, still being discovered and loved by generations who were born long after the stars of those movies had died. Look at how many people who love I Love Lucy who weren't even born yet when Lucille Ball died. The Beatles transcend generations. Its true that those who were around in the 60s stake claim to "owning" them, but the great thing is that their music was so great that 20 year olds can discover them and love them as well. Most of the people I know who have been buying the vinyl reissues are people who never had the chance to go to a store and buy a new vinyl copy of Rubber Soul because records had been phased out of the mainstream as long as they'd been alive.

That said, I'm 33, had just celebrated my first birthday a few days before Lennon's murder, and the only recollection I have of any of the solo Beatles having any big hits was George Harrison's renaissance when I was about 8-9 as even Macca's big hits had come to an end around 1984-1985... yet The Beatles are one of my fave groups. I didn't like them much as a kid and only knew of their image, but once I cracked into their albums as I got older, I understood the hype. I know plenty of die-hard Beatle fans who are younger than me and have no recollection of Lennon being alive or Paul McCartney being anything more than that lovable old uncle type.
