The Last Witch Hunter (2015, D: Breck Eisner) S: Vin Diesel, Elijah Wood, Rose Leslie
The script for "The Last Witch Hunter" (which made the 2010 Black List) was written by Cory Goodman, whose past crimes against cinema include post-apocalyptic vampire muddle "Priest" and uncredited work on lame-ass found footage moon movie "Apollo 18." The fact that he seems to be one of the most frequently produced names in genre filmmaking right now is truly baffling. According to the Wrap's report, the plot concerns "one of the last remaining witch hunters, who is charged with discouraging a group of witches and warlocks from reproducing." Didn't we see exactly the same thing in the "Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters" trailer? Apparently "The Last Witch Hunter" will be set in present day New York, which should at least set it apart from its rival, at least.
Emmett/Furla Films is on board to produce, continuing a ten-picture deal with Lionsgate and its Grindstone Entertainment Group, which was just re-upped this summer (despite a number of the films under the partnership, including "Set Up" with Bruce Willis and "Freelancers" with Robert De Niro, went directly to DVD).
We can see Diesel being a cutting witch hunter, for sure. He can snarl with the best of them. But right now he's busy with his twin franchises – Universal's "Fast & Furious 6" (set for release on May 24th, 2013) and the independently financed (and still as-yet-untitled) Riddick sequel, which doesn't have a release date yet.

I actually liked Priest. It was a fun time-waster.

Yeah it was. I especially enjoyed the motorcycle/train scene near the ending. Those motorcycles reminded me of final fantasy.
I wonder if Vin is still making that triple xXx sequel. No word on that. And also no more word on that other new movie he was supposed to play a robot (The Machine).

Is it me or Diesel looks chunky?

This looks like something that's been sitting on a shelf hard drive and now getting a release because they're hoping to cash in on Vin's renewed box office cache from the F&F franchise.

Indeed it does. Hell, this thread was started in 2010 (even if the movie looks like it would have been at home along his output during 2000).

I won't say the film looks terrible, but that wasn't a very exciting trailer.

Just saw the new 2:25 trailer...looks good. Interesting mix with "Harry Potter" and "Riddick" side-by-side.

I think Vin just looks silly in this role.

I'm on vacation next week, so I might try and catch a matinee with the wife. She loves Diesel, and it looks entertaining enough.

Lionsgate really needs another franchise.
Really weird how Lionsgate got this boom of growth doing one thing but now the environment demands a different property culture to actually grow.

This was bad, not god awful, tear your hair out bad, but bad nonetheless (and worse yet, utterly tedious and boring). Really not sure what the studio was thinking green-lighting this with such a terrible screenplay.

I saw this last night and it was ok. It should have been longer due to how dense the mythology is. I checked out the DVD from the library. For an SD it looked and sounded great. I'm sure the BD would have looked and sounded even better.

I watched this on Blu-ray last night and I liked it. I did think it was light on action though. It reminded me of the first two Blade movies, but with witches and warlocks instead of vampires. I would give it 3/5.
