Most anticipated games as a kid?
With Borderlands 2 getting closer to release i haven't been this excited for a game to come out since i was a kid.
Resident Evil 2 was the first. I remember playing the crap out of the 1st and got so excited when a new playstation magazine came out with new screenshots and info. I even got the demo disc for RE2. Must've played the demo a dozen times. My dad was nice enough to pick it up on release day and i played it straight through in one sitting (forgot which character).
Final Fantasy 8: FF7 i never finished but my hs friend and i were obsessed with FF and talked about 8 everyday up until release. Didn't like it as much as 7 but always would talk about the game at school on our lvl progress. And i kept the tradition of never finishing a FF game
Metal Gear Solid: I still have the ps magazine that had a huge article on the game. I read that issue nearly every week till the game came out.

Missile Command...I played it in the arcade, and did not know it was available for the 2600 until I saw it in the store. I was about 10 I guess..My mom told me I could get it for my birthday, so I spent weeks (seemed like years) playing the game in the arcade, and counting down the days...
I made that game my bitch...

As a kid? Maybe Pac Man for the 2600. Had no idea it would suck as bad as it did. It was a horrible version and I regretted the purchase almost immediately.

Super Mario Bros. 3 was probably the biggest. I remember seeing The Wizard, and getting just a minor glimpse at the game had me eager to get to play it myself.
Now if you're not just talking about waiting for a game to be released, or games in general, I think the most anticipation I had was actually getting an NES. I had a 2600 as my main system well into the 80s, and I remember a neighbor got an NES not too long after it came out (early 1986). He had R.O.B., the zapper, everything. Even though R.O.B. never worked all that well, you still had a robot playing a video game with you. As a kid, that was freaking awesome!
I wouldn't get an NES of my own until late '87, but after playing the NES, the 2600 just didn't cut it anymore.

As for the games?
SMB3, Super Mario World, Super Mario 64. Lots of Mario anticipation.

Mortal Kombat 2 for me. That's the game the finally got me to pick up a SNES because they allowed the blood after uncensored fatalities after being absent from the first one.

I remember two events specifically.
Super Mario Bros. 3 -- The Wizard hyped that up even more. OOOH POWER GLOVE!
And, for some reason, I remember waiting for Strider (GENESIS) with much impatience. I'm pretty sure I dragged my mom to the store on release day. Pretty sure I bought that at Babbage's. Wow. Totally forgot about Babbage's.

As a young kid:
Super Mario Bros. 3.
TMNT 2: The Arcade Game
As a Teen:
WWE Raw (SNES)
WWF: Rage in the Cage (Sega CD)
Mortal Kombat 2 (SNES)
All of the WCW/THQ Games (N64)
Each of the three SNES Tecmo Bowl Games. (The Third was the best, Second was the worst)

Definitely Super Mario 3. I remember searching all over town in vain for a copy the day it was released, and being incredibly disappointed when our final stop (K-Mart, I think it was) told us they were also sold out. Then, as we were browsing around the store for other stuff, the announcement comes over the intercom: "Attention customers, we now have 2 copies of Super Mario 3 available at the service desk." My sister looked at me with wide eyes and said, "Run! Get one!"
I ran. We got one.
I ran. We got one.

Biggest was Super Mario World for SNES since it was a launch title. Second was probably Mortal Kombat a few years after that.

Probably Spider-Man and X-Men for Genesis.
I should clarify that I mean the individual games, not the crappy team up game.

I don't think there were that many before the 16-bit era. It seems like the SNES/Genesis period was when the magazines really took off, and we also didn't get the kind of advance notice of games we get now. The way it is now, we hear that a game is coming at least a year in advance, even if it doesn't get delayed. Now, they build up the hype more over time. With GTA V, I believe it will have been around 18 months between the point it was announced and the release of the game. Then again, I guess a few months to a child felt pretty long.
For me, most of them were probably games in arcades that were coming to consoles, like SFII and MK. SFII was big, because it was a 16 meg cartridge (that's megabits) which was unprecedented at the time, and there were some articles about it in the magazines. I also remember looking forward to Final Fantasy III (well, really VI). I was usually more excited about new hardware, I think.
I think the 16-bit era was also when they started heavily advertising the release dates, with "Mortal Monday" and "Sonic 2sday."

NBA Jam for SNES. The day it finally showed up at Wal-Mart was one of the happiest days of my young life. Probably got around 400-500 hours out of that game. Second place would have to be NFL Blitz for PSX. Probably got around 600 hours out of that. Yes, I love arcade sports games.

Re: Most anticipated games as a kid?
Sonic 2 comes to mind. I had pre-ordered it at I think Good Guys or Circuit City, and after school I got in the car with my dad to go pick it up, and he asked me to get him something in the glove box and the game was there. Awesome day.
I remember all my friends and I highly anticipating Street Fighter 2 for snes.
