Bad Performances in Good Films?

List performances that were not up to par with the material or just downright bad in otherwise good films.

I'll start it off...

Mickey Rooney- Breakfast At Tiffany's (the all-time worst offender)
Sophia Coppola- Godfather III (remember I said good films not great )
January Jones- X-Men: First Class
Keanu Reeves- Bram Stoker's Dracula (clearly out of his league)
Andie McDowell- Groundhog Day (and in pretty much everything else)
Frida Pinto- Rise of the Planet of the Apes (just an all around bad actress)

Brad "nooo ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ nooooo" Pitt from Seven.
Robert DeNiro/Al Pacino in Heat, even though they're still cool though.

Re: Bad Performances in Good Films?

Andie McDowell was fine in her role in Groundhog Day. She was, however, FUCKING ABYSMAL in "Four Weddings and a Funeral", and pretty much universally acknowledged as such when the film came out.

Frida Pinto, on the other hand, you're on your own there.

Seriously. Next time you check out those movies play close attention to their performances. They're really not very good.

Here's an interesting link...

If you would have said Four Weddings I would have been okay, but she is quite a good actress. Not versatile, but good.

sex, lies and videotape, Green Card, Short Cuts, Multiplicity - all fine. And Groundhog Day is probably her best performance.

I'll agree with you about January Jones in X-Men and Unknown and everything not Mad Men.

Re: Bad Performances in Good Films?

Elizabeth McGovern in Once Upon a Time in America - Really bad, stiff performance especially compared to Jennifer Connelly who plays her younger self.

Kim Basinger in L.A. Confidential - How the hell did she win an Oscar for this? She was the only one in the cast who gave a lousy performance.

Katie Holmes in Batman Begins

Stephen Lack in Scanners - Movie would have been better with Jeff Goldblum.

came to post this...one of my favorite movies, and her performance continues to me make me cringe.

Re: Bad Performances in Good Films?

I watched Jaws (in Blu!) two nights ago and I was struck by how poor some of the "extra" actors were. The leads were incredible (of course) but some of the townspeople were abysmal. Sheider's secretary was particularly bad, his deputy as well. It was almost enough to jar one out of a very great movie.

If I remember correctly, a lot of the "townspeople" were just that...people from the town that Spielberg put in the movie. Maybe not the secretary or deputy but Ben Gardner, for example, was just a dude that lived in the area.

I figured that but it doesn't lessen their bad performances for me. I'm sure there were huge budget issues but it does affect the movie.

Cary Elwes in Saw. He's so laughably bad it's distracting at times.

Not that it's a great movie, but he was pretty bad in Liar, Liar too.
