Damn. I need to ruminate over the choices. From your list...I've made a short list.

Exorcist III
Seven
Jacob's Ladder
Funny Games

Oh... and anyone that votes for TFTCP: Demon Night needs to be suspended.

Re: Favorite 90's Horror Film?

I'm not sure what happened between the 80's and the 90's, but my love for horror films seems to have taken a dive. I have little no affection for most 90's horror films, and the ones I did like are arguably not really "horror" movies.

That said, I have affection for Wes Craven's New Nightmare, though not a perfect film, I loved the return to the world of Elm Street.

Jacob's Ladder is a superb beauty of horror and sorrow.

I included Nightbreed in my list of 80's horror, thought it was '89. Opps.

And Exorcist III is a terrific movie. Does a great of including a lot of humor without decreasing the tension and fright in the rest of the movie.

Re: Favorite 90's Horror Film?

I picked Jacob's Ladder. Everything came together for that film: acting, story, dialogue, special effects, and cinematography.

I don't consider Silence of the Lambs horror, but more suspense/thriller. But if so, it would be 2nd to Jacob's Ladder.

I love Jacob's Ladder great movie it scared the crap out of me one day when there was some head shaking in a scene I jumped out of my chair lol!

But...my favorite is Candyman. It's also more gore and bloody. Plus in school back in the day we cracked jokes about saying Candyman 5 times to a mirror lol

Silence of the Lambs is the clear winner. I've seen that film more times than I can count and I still find something new in it every time.

From that list I chose In the Mouth of Madness, although Event Horizon and Jacob's Ladder are right up there too. -kd5-

IMO, the horror genre definitely took a huge dive in the 90's. Perhaps it's just a nostalgia factor for 70s and 80s horror movies but those two decades hold a place in a my heart for favorite horror flicks.

Of the choices mentioned, Silence of the Lambs and The Exorcist III are the stand outs to me (probably not a coincidence that both were made at the tail end of the 80s/early 90's).

I loved The Sixth Sense when I first saw it in theaters, though after about the third viewing The Sixth Sense has actually become pretty boring. It's not nearly as "deep" as my 18 year old brain thought it was.

I'll throw out Scream. One of my favorites form the 90s which is fitting considering it's a call back to the great horror flicks of the 80s.

Re: Favorite 90's Horror Film?

The 90s up to now horror became kind of blah if you ask me. There's some exceptions of course but overall earlier movies are better. I don't know that I really agree with Silence of the Lambs and Se7en as true horror movies. They both have creepy elements but don't really seem like horror in the traditional sense. Great films though.

I kind of am having a hard time even coming up with a pick though. Scream is good but sort of overrated. Exorcist III is better than it sometimes gets credit for I suppose. It is another creepy one (made for television but I'm still counting it). The Frighteners is good too.

Re: Favorite 90's Horror Film?

The Blair Witch Project, which still gets to me to this day.

I think the 90's are slightly underrated in terms of horror. Personal favorites include:

Dellamorte Dellamore
Jacob's Ladder
Hardware
Seven
The Night Flier
Ravenous
Lord of Illusions
Jack Be Nimble
Audition
Exorcist III
Candyman
In the Mouth of Madness
The Dark Side of the Moon
Dust Devil
New Nightmare

I also have a soft spot for some of the low budget monster flicks, like Mosquito, Bad Moon, Project: Metalbeast and Ticks.

Oddly enough, despite being a huge Friedkin fan, I didn't care for The Exorcist. I love Exorcist III and Schrader's Dominion, though.

Silence of the Lambs and Seven are great films but it's never crossed my mind before that they're horror films.

Those out of the way, my top 3 (in no particular order) would be In the Mouth of Madness, Candyman & Event Horizon.

Scream. Loved how the characters were self aware and had a lot of fun making fun of itself and the horror genre in general.

New Nightmare is, imo, far superior to Scream.

On that list, I wouldn't consider Silence of the Lambs, Seven or Lost Highway horror films.

Re: Favorite 90's Horror Film?

90s was a great decade for thrillers but for pure horror it seemed to be lacking. Scream was clever but it ushered in a wave of toned down teen slasher movies that I couldn't stand. I went with Cemetery Man.

What is the worst era for horror: 40s or 90s?

The 90s weren't that great, but in my opinion, it's the 40s. Other than The Wolf Man and the Val Lewton pictures, there wasn't much going on there, horror-wise.
