I am looking for a good DVD player for 200.00 or less. Any reviews on the JVC xv523gd?

Have you tried audioreview.com for reviews? I own the RCA522OP player and I haven't had any problems with it so far. If you're looking for a player with great picture and sound for the price ($200 about 6 months ago) then you might want to check it out.

Do yourself a favor and don't get an RCA or JVC dvd player. In my opinion the best dvd player you can get for about $200 is the Toshiba 2109. Unfortunately this model has been replaced by the Toshiba SD1200 which you could get for about $160 plus shipping from Mercata. You could also go one step further and get the SD2200 for about $215 plus shipping from Mercata. You will most likely get the best deal with Mercata since you can get 20% off if you are a new user.

There have been firmware problems reported on these players but I wouldn't worry too much about it. The problems don't seem to be too wide spread. I love my 2109 and haven't had a single problem with it yet. Hope this helps.

I would worry about the firmware issue since it has popped up again on the Toy Story DVDs.

The Sony 360 (if you don't need decoders) at 200-210 from what I saw on dealtime is the most reliable machine. (Don't know if it still comes with the 2 dvds for 5 bucks coupon with no committments from columbia house--which can be an added bonus)

Firmware problems are not only occuring in Toshiba players but in prettty much all lower end players. It is not a common thing but a minor flaw in a few players. I just got the Toy Story 2-pack and both dvds ran fine on my older Toshiba 2109. Do yourself a favor sziegelmeyer and research these firmware problems yourself.

Except for the Sony's. I have had my DVP-S300 for two years now with not a single problem. Overall fewer problems have occurred with the Sony players then pretty much any brand especially regarding software incompatibility. Considering that Sony, Pioneer and Toshiba seem to be the most commonly owned players and only Toshiba's players have consistantly had problems I would look at Sony and Pioneer - Sony DVP-S360 and the Pioneer DV-333 in particular. The Pioneer also plays CD-R's if that is a concern for you. http://talk.dvdtalk.com/ubb/smile.gif http://talk.dvdtalk.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

What you have to understand is that this is not a common problem among toshiba players or even players in general. Unfortunately for toshiba it has occured slightly more in their players but this still does not happen in most of their players. I have owned the toshiba 2109 which I got for $165 from Mercata for over a year now and have not had a single problem with it yet. It is a great player that includes many features and the only thing it doesn't have is a decoder and the ability to play CDRs. Toshiba puts out good players and so do Sony and Pioneer. See which player suits you needs best and decide for yourself. I know friends and relatives with several different toshiba models who have never had any problems with their players so I know this doesn't happen often. I just think that for the price you specified you could get so much more with the Toshibas.
