I know Marantz and Denon are favorites around here, but I'm afraid they are too upscale(i.e.,expensive)for me. Can someone
recommend a good,mid-range priced receiver?
One that sounds great for both movies AND music? I'm looking at all the usual suspects, like Sony,Pioneer, and Onkyo.

In my opinion two good mid-priced recievers would be the Sony DB830 and the Onkyo 575. It is kinda hard to choose one without a price range though.

Well,

What kind of speakers do you have and what type of sound do you prefer?

Ineffecient speakers are better off w/a receiver w/a solid amp (Onkyo, maybe Yamaha).
Onkyo's more bread and butter, but soild.
Yamaha gives you a few features (DSPs).

If you want to make lots of adjustments of crossovers, equalizers, bass management - tweak-a-holic type things, Sony's a good bet. Lot's of inputs, more ergonomic, feature driven.

W/a bright/unforgiving speaker (say a NHT model), I find

Onkyo575 can be a little darker sounding in stereo - more rich/midrange accented. Tendency for sounding pleasing.

Yamaha795a/596 can be bright - more clear/treble accented. Tendency for sounding etched/detailed.

Sony somewhere in between, closer to Yamaha.
