Steve Martin: The Television Stuff (9/18/12)
I was just looking at the Get a Life set on Amazon and listed in the "frequently bought with" section was Steve Martin: The Television Stuff, out on Sept. 18. I did a double take as I was scrolling down the page because I had no idea such a set was being released.
Here is the listing on Amazon:
Over six hours of rare stand-up, television specials, guest appearances and more.
Steve Martin remains one of the most beloved and creatively prolific talents in American comedy, but until now his body of work on television has been largely unavailable on DVD. That all changes here. From the stand-up act that made him a comedy rock star (of which only two complete performances were ever recorded, both included in this set) to his four joyfully twisted NBC sketch comedy specials, his Oscar-nominated short film and a jewel box of additional comic bits, The Television Stuff finally delivers one of the most unique and treasured eras in Steve Martin’s celebrated career. Featuring special guest appearances by Dan Aykroyd, Laraine Newman, Lauren Hutton, John Belushi, Bill Murray, Lynn Redgrave, Paul Simon, David Letterman, Carl Reiner, Eric Idle and Johnny Cash
The Stand-up Specials
* On Location With Steve Martin (Live At The Troubadour, 1976)
* Homage To Steve (Includes The Absent Minded Waiter and Steve Live At The Universal Amphitheatre, 1979)
The NBC Specials
* Steve Martin: A Wild And Crazy Guy (1978)
* Steve Martin: Comedy Is Not Pretty (1980)
* All Commercials . . . A Steve Martin Special (1980)
* Steve Martin’s Best Show Ever (1981)
Bits And Pieces
Spanning 1966 to 2005, a collection of television guest appearances, speeches and music videos.

Shout! Factory really is doing the Lord's work with their releases. I watched "Comedy Is Not Pretty" many, many times when I was a kid. I still have it on an old VHS tape and have been meaning to digitize it. But I'd much rather have a cleaned up, official release! I am so happy right now.
(Forgive me if there's already a thread about this set. I searched and nothing came up.)

I got this set on Tuesday and am just now going through it. I love having "Comedy Is Not Pretty" on DVD (finally!) and am playing it right now, but it's strange. There's canned laughter added to this special. Maybe it's just my memory, but I *swear* it didn't have that when I saw it as a kid. I'll have to pull out my taped copy of it on VHS and confirm.
Hmmmm. No laugh tracks on these clips that I found:

<iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/WUlcD3IKAhc" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Maybe there was a different broadcast that used the laugh track and it was the only one available for this set. If it was newly added for the DVD, then that really sucks.

this is a must have for me. I remember when Steve came to Houston in the late 70's I went to 2 shows in one day. (They added a matinee that I got better seats for). I have the old VHS tape, which I believe is on this release too?
This is 22.99 shipped at buy.com, but it is sold out. When I see it below 20, it's mine.

My brother nearly crapped himself when I showed him this, as he's a big fan of Steve Martin's stand-up.
Releases like this are why Shout is awesome.

Re: Steve Martin: The Television Stuff (9/18/12)
I was the first in line to order this, cause I love Steve Martin.........................boy, was he ever corny! A real cornball, was he! That HBO special...all he did was false starts for like a half-hour...it was very dry - a little too dry.
Now, I'm willing to admit that maybe, just maybe I wasn't in the best of moods when I tried to watch this......I suppose it is possible to not be in the mood for corn-ball comedy. Duh-huh, I'm Steve Martin!............
I'll give it another try on a rare day I might be in the right mood.
