Looks like the voting changes every 8 hours. The message on the page after you vote, says "When the voting period ends, we'll tally all the choices made by the Steam Community. The deal picked first overall will go on sale as The Community's Choice!"

Currently there is about 3 1/2 hours left to vote on the current choices.

Oh, the Walking Dead game is 25% off so it's $18.74 as part of the Telltale Pack sale. I highly recommend it.

Remember the cardinal rule of Steam sales: unless it's being offered as a daily deal, always wait until the last day before buying a game.

Also Sniper Elite V2 is $14.99 for a few more days at Amazon (Steam key). I doubt the Steam sale will be any better than this. The demo was pretty damn fun.

GreenVulture

Saints Row 3 won the community poll: game is now $12.50, or $24.99 for the game plus all DLC.

Next poll: Limbo, Magicka or Trine 2 (each 75% off).

I have SR3 on the Xbox, but never picked up the DLC; will probably be taking part in this deal.

One more purchase before I go to bed, as Trine 2 won the poll; game is now $3.75 for the next 7 and a half hours. Next choices are: Brink (75% off), Stronghold 3 (Gold) (66% off) or Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2 (75% off).

I loop this on my second monitor while watching the day's deals.

I still say Steam fans are the best fans. As far as I go in this sale... nothing for me today. I've got plenty of stuff earmarked for during the sale though. I almost went for the Saints Row 3 community pick $12.49 but CAG is saying it will be even cheaper at Amazon next week (and it's Steamplay, so no worries there)

is the Binding of Isaac any good? Looks like something you'd want a controller for... does it work ok with mouse and keyboard?

RobLutter
07-13-12, 12:29 PM
Picked up Sonic Generations... missed it the last time it was on sale. Also picked up the DLC, as that is $0.53, so why the hell not?

I'd pick up Max Payne 3, but I really don't want it for PC just for the reason that it takes up THIRTY-FIVE (35) GIGABYTES. That's a bit... excessive.

Been hearing mixed things about Binding of Isaac... people seem to either adore it or hate it. Reminders: all of yesterday's dailies are available as well until midnight.

It's a super difficult game - a mix between roguelikes and the original Legend of Zelda, only much grosser. It plays fine with just the keyboard, but you can use some third-party software to map the controls to a controller. I've only ever played it with the keyboard, so I can't comment on the controller aspect beyond that. The game itself is really good in my opinion. For $1.24, I think it's pretty easy to recommend.

Picked up Payday from a 4 pack ($3.74 each), and From Dust. I'd get MP3 at $24.99, but that's my limit. I'm thinking about Anno 2070, since I really enjoyed the last one.

If anyone's still up, there's a particularly good flash deal that's good until 8AM: Alan Wake for $7.49, or $9.99 for the collector's edition version of the game plus American Nightmare.

Also, the current community poll choice is Bioshock 2, at $4.99. Next poll choices are Super Meat Boy and two other games that don't stand a chance, Q.U.B.E. and Plants vs. Zombies: GOTY Edition, each at 75% off.

I have Plants vs. Zombie in my cart. I don't know if I should spend another $2.49 on it despite already owning it on the iPhone and iPad.

Is Dead Island worth $10? If so, should I spring for the DLC too at 66% off?

BAH. Left 4 Dead 2 is the next flash sale. I purchased it for $3 during its launch on OS X. :( I wanted Half Life 2 damnit as that's the only Valve game I don't have a license for on Steam!

Man, I have been going crazy with this.

I just bought the Total War Collection. It wasn't even very expensive to begin with, but I got it for $29. That's every total war game except for the Shogun titles! Crazy. I now have five separate campaigns going on in five different games.

I finally moved my Steam install of my SSD to the secondary hard drive. Now I have tons of storage so I have been downloading lots. I'll probably go over my internet cap this month...

I'm thinking of rebuying Alan Wake (have the franchise on the 360) just for the soundtrack.

wlj
07-19-12, 12:39 PM
I hope the Left 4 Dead community isn't completely dead. I just purchased that. I had the game on the 360 when it was released and played the hell out of it. I got rid of it when L4D2 was released. Well turns out L4D2 wasn't as good and I have regretted selling the first one.

Like I have said before, I am no PC gamer so I haven't taken part in the Steam stuff before. Holy crap they have some good deals everyday. Some people could really get into trouble. There has been like 10 games I have wanted to buy.

Ghym
07-19-12, 12:47 PM
I've only bought a couple of things. I've been trying not to buy too much, since I'm trying to save money, and I have a pile of games from other sales that I haven't played yet.

Matthew Chmiel
07-19-12, 08:23 PM
I've only purchased this year:

Amnesia: The Dark Descent ($4.99)
Grand Theft Auto: The Complete Collection ($12.99; includes GTA, GTA2, GTA3, GTA: Vice City, GTA: San Andreas, GTAIV and all its DLC).
Plants vs. Zombies: Game of the Year Edition ($2.49)
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic ($2.49)

It averages about to $2.55 a game, can't beat that!

I'm still trying to determine if I want to purchase Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas ($14.99 gets you both games and all of the DLC) and Dead Island now that it's a flash sale again.

Ghym
07-19-12, 08:51 PM
I did just pick up Dead Island, since it's a flash sale. New Vegas is a game I picked up during a previous sale, that I still haven't played. It's sitting in my ever expanding Steam pile of shame. Whenever I start to catch up, I end up buying more crap on sale.

I was actually inspired to build a PC because of this sale. Tired of not being able to participate. Haven't had a PC for gaming in about 8 years so it was a bit of an adjustment but I'm all good to go.

So far I picked up:

Need for Speed Hot Pursuit
Limbo
2K Collection: Borderlands, Spec Ops The Line, Duke Nukem Forever, Mafia 2, Darkness II, Civilization 5
Darksiders
Grand Theft Auto IV Complete Collection

All for about $79 total. Got plenty to keep my occupied now!

Anyone want to chime in on SC: Conviction? After a couple of rocky opening stages, I loved Chaos Theory--which is odd because I normally dislike stealth games--and thought Double Agent was somewhat disappointing (and fairly short, to boot).

EDIT: Nevermind, remembered that Conviction has the "constant internet connection required" DRM bullshit. I'll pass, regardless of price.

SC: Conviction is awesome. It's completely unlike any of the other SC games, but that's not a bad thing. It's just a great action game. The UBI constant connection DRM has been patched out. You just a one time verification. Also, not much use in getting the Deluxe Edition. You can unlock the Infiltration mode with UPlay points you get from playing the game.

As long as you go into Fable 3 without any high expectations from Peter Molyneux built up, and know that it's not really an RPG and more of an action game you'll like it.

Not sure about Crysis.

Or $96.18 for 14 games and some DLC. At least I managed to stay under my $100 limit, if barely.

Fable III is $12.49 and Crysis Collection is $17.49. Are they worth it?

Crysis is a great game. Despite being five years old, it is still one of the best looking games out there. If you have powerful enough hardware to run it on max settings, it is just jaw-dropping. It is still a good looking game on lower settings.

Crysis 2 is okay, but you can definitely tell it was made for consoles and merely ported to PC.

Or it is until you get thrown into some stupid zero-gravity silliness aboard an alien spaceship, and from there it gets dumber.

I am currently enjoying Crysis though it's a tad too "open world". I usually like that but this is a bit too big so I often lose track as to what the hell am I supposed to do. I actually had to google how to fight the two tanks cos I never noticed the rocket launchers in the first floor of the school.

Yeah, the zero-g part is definitely the worst segment of the game. It doesn't help that it is hard to tell where you need to go so you can get disoriented very easily.

Overall though I didn't think the alien chapters were too bad. They were definitely a lot better than the mutants from the original Far Cry. However, the best parts of both games is when you are in a jungle stalking enemy soldiers. That can be played very tactically, but once the aliens/mutants come in it just becomes a generic run-n-gun shooter.

I think my intense dislike of that zero-g segment tainted the rest of the game for me. Plus, I found the fights against the aliens to be much harder, almost ridiculously so at times. Kind of put me off the rest of the franchise (well, that and needing an Origin account to play Crysis 2 on the PC).

Don't forget once you're done with the game to take a leisurely drive with Doc Brown's sweetass DeLorean:

Since the download of Crysis 2 finished, I decided to give it a whirl. You can definitely tell, as you said, that it was made with consoles first in mind. However, I like how they handled the nano-suit abilities better. And at least the 360 controller wasn't awkwardly implemented. In Crysis the right stick has to be held down in order to crouch and they totally forgot about assigning a prone button to the 360 controller. Of course, it seems Crysis 2 just ditched prone altogether.

Totally off-subject here, but what's the story with the origin of Crysis? Was it the spiritual successor to Far Cry? Was it made by the same team? And what does Far Cry 2 have to do with Far Cry? Best as I can tell the two games hare nothing in common but being FPS games.

Crysis and FarCry are the same company... Crytek.

FarCry 2, on the other hand, was made by Ubisoft. And it's got almost nothing to do with FarCry.

Great, now my brain hurts. :)

It seems all the "sequels" were made by Ubisoft but they only market Far Cry 2 as the "true" sequel (despite having nothing to do with the first). :hscratch:

The original PC Far Cry was developed by Crytek. Ubisoft later bought the rights to the game and ported it to consoles. Although in reality, the console version is so very different that its practically a different game in all but name.

Since Ubisoft now owns the Far Cry rights, Crytek had to come up with a new name for its next game, which it called Crysis. Crysis is kind of a spiritual successor to the original Far Cry since the gameplay is very similar and has a similar open-world jungle environment, but Crysis isn't really related to Far Cry at all other than that since it has completely different characters and storyline.

Since Ubisoft owns the complete rights to the Far Cry name, they made Far Cry 2 themselves. Crytek wasn't involved at all.

How/why did they lose it?

I don't know the specifics, but Ubisoft published the original PC Far Cry. Sometime after its release, Crytek and Ubisoft had a falling out. I guess maybe because the publisher finances the whole project, they retain the IP rights? I don't know.

But anyway, Crytek joined with EA and so EA publishes the Crysis franchise while Crytek develops it, and Ubisoft both publishes and develops every Far Cry game since the original PC game.

I tried not to buy much this time, but I kind of failed. Although most of the games I bought were $5 or less. I didn't add them all up, but I'm pretty sure I got all these for about the price of one full-priced game. So, I got out cheaper than I have in the past.

Batman: Arkham City + Harley Quinn DLC
Tribes: Ascend - Steam Starter Pack
Bastion
Dear Esther
Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit
The Binding of Isaac + Wrath of the Lamb DLC
Galactic Civilization II
Dead Island
Botanicula
Dungeons of Dredmor: Realm of the Diggle Gods DLC
Splinter Cell Conviction
Bulletstorm

Picked up SPAZ as my final purchase. Damage wasn't so bad this year...

Pre Steam Sale grabs:
Borderlands GOTY (Amazon, $7.49)
Endless Space (GMG, $22)
Sniper Elite (Amazon $15)

From the actual sale:
Hard Reset - $3.75
From Dust - $3.74
Payday - $3.75
Fallout New Vegas Ultimate - $9.99
Driver: SF - $7.49, game is unplayable though, so I'm trying to get my money back.
SPAZ - $2.49

Freebies from Amazon:
EUIII Chronicles
Mount And Blade: Warband

Pretty light sale for me. I was thinking about some other stuff (MP3 especially), but there's only so much time in a day. I'll pick up MP3 once it's cheaper and I have less "new" stuff to play.

Ditto. Plus you just know that a GOTY edition is coming with all their planned DLC included. I should have waited before buying LA Noire, so I'm intending on making up for that mistake with Max Payne. But I really did enjoy the game when I rented it.

I was pretty tempted to grab Batman AC with all the DLC as it was so cheap and apparently looks better on the PC, but I just didn't feel like tackling the whole game over again.

BTW : Doesn't the Steam sale really make you start to resent XBLA? Seeing things like Bastion, Alan Wake's American Nightmare and Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet for $3.75 just makes me so reluctant to spend 1200 points on anything any more.

Yep. I'm currently transitioning to Steam from XBLA. It's so hard to justify that. I can't wait for FEZ to break free from its exclusivity.

Most of the games I wanted were either too "high" or I've already played them on the Xbox 360.

So I only got Batman AC... that I've already played. :D

Yep, and now that I have my pc to tv setup worked out better it's that much easier for me to give up the 360 and switch to my pc. I wonder if consoles will ever be forced to compete in the downloadable space on price based on competition from Steam and other download services or if they will keep trying to protect their walled garden with exclusives.

Any game that I was interested that I didn't purchase is because I already own the game on the PC or a different platform.

The last two games I picked up were Fallout 3 (GOTY Edition) and Fallout: New Vegas (Ultimate Edition).

In my defense, I walked out of this summer sale with spending no more than $35 which my wife is probably grateful about ...

... now, uh, just to find time to play all these games I bought.

This seems as good a place as any to post this : The folks who put out Dungeon Defenders just came out with a free DLC pack that includes the new Jester character class. After this week it jumps in price to $3.99. It's free for everyone whether you own the game or not. Just go here (http://store.steampowered.com/app/208546/?snr=1_7_suggest__13) and click on "Install Game" to own the DLC for the game.
