The one that jumps out immediately for me is Fallout 3. Would love to see a franchise based on that game.

One of Bethesda's other products like Oblivion or Skyrim would also be great to see on film.

What about you guys?

Fallout 1 or 2, Baldur's Gate, Heavy Rain, Indigo Prophecy (with altered ending), Maniac Mansion, Day of the Tentacle, Grim Fandango, King's Quest VI, Space Quest, The 7th Guest, Final Fantasy based on an actual game and not a side story or continuation of one, ICO (SoC is already in production apparently), Metal Gear Solid, Mass Effect, Metroid (Prometheus was close), Chrono Trigger, Halo.

Bioshock but I think it would be way to expensive to make and it would have to be rated R and over two hours long...-wink-

Yep.

“I couldn’t really get past anybody that would spend the money that it would take to do it and keep an R rating,” he explained to Coming Soon.

“Alternately, I wasn’t really interested in pursuing a PG-13 version. Because the R rating is inherent. Little Sisters and injections and the whole thing. I just wanted to really, really make it a movie where, four days later, you’re still shivering and going, “Jesus Christ!”… It’s a movie that has to be really, really scary, but you also have to create a whole underwater world, so the pricetag is high. We just didn’t have any takers on an R-rated movie with that pricetag.”

Who's that quote from? I know a Bioshock movie is at least been brought up by studios.

It was an interview with Gore Verbinski on why the project fell apart. Unless Chris Nolan or James Cameron were to step in, it won't get made anytime soon.

Oh yea, I forgot that Gore Verbinski was attached to that project. Shame.

A Mass Effect movie is in the works. UbiSoft wants to make a Splinter Cell movie. I'd like to see that. Uncharted can be cool if they make it a standalone adventure. Distric 9 was born from the abandoned Halo project (which explains why the movie suddenly felt like a retarded shooter towards the end).

I'd like to see a proper adaptation of Max Payne, particularly Max Payne 2. Just call it The Late Goodbye so people won't associate it with the first movie attempt.

Was it? Thought there were some similarities, still don't get the raves for that movie, it went from boring to stupid in the blink of an eye.

Has there been a good video game to movie adaptation? I would like more original ideas in movies rather than failed attempts at adaptations.

Mortal Kombat 1. Cheesy now but based off the material...it's pretty og an adaptation. It's an alright movie, fun.

Silent Hill was so close to perfect just for the visual alone. Too bad it had a shit sotry.

Was it? Thought there were some similarities

From what I recall, Jackson and Blomkamp were trying to make a Halo movie (of which the test footage was turned into a commercial for the game) but Microsoft was demanding it have a huge budget with little investment on their part. The project fell appart so Jackson and Blomkamp made District 9 (based on a short film by Blomkamp) instead.

still don't get the raves for that movie, it went from boring to stupid in the blink of an eye.

That's my issues with it, in a nutshell.

Has there been a good video game to movie adaptation? I would like more original ideas in movies rather than failed attempts at adaptations.

Silent Hill was decent. Although not living up to its potential, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time was a fun flick. And as Snake mentioned, Mortal Kombat is cheesy but fun. I wonder what the hell happened to that new adaptation Warner Bros was developing. The shorts were good.

I would like to see a Grand Theft Auto adaptation if they found a way to make it an indirect sequel to Drive with Refn directing and Gosling in the role. I still think the movie's opening is the closest I have ever seen to capturing the feel of GTA.

Crank feels "inspired by" GTA but they are actually nothing at all like the games.

Bioshock tops my list, however Uncharted, Assassin's Creed, Halo and Half-Life would make great movies, if done right.

I'll toss out Mirror's Edge. It's kinda like Johnny Mnemonic, but you know, not shitty.

I'd still like to see a good Tomb Raider flick.

I've never seen RE, but aren't they pretty much their own thing and have nothing to do with the games? I wouldn't call that a "good" adaptation.

The First two were decent action/horror movies, they are not their own things and have many connections to the games, Wiki has the connections:

The Dig should be made into a movie, that would be amazing to see on the big screen.

I also agree with the suggestion of The 7th Guest, could be pretty good though I can see why it might not work.

All of the Valve properties could make for some great movies.

Well, maybe except Team Fortress 2. That'll make for a great television series.

I remember Speilberg wanting to make a movie of The Dig, but the technology at the time wasn't up to snuff.

I wouldn't mind seeing a Planescape: Torment movie. Or Ultima VII: The Black Gate.

Or Star Control II, though that one could turn out really bad, if the aliens weren't done well. Some of the aliens are also meant to be goofy, which might not play out well on the big screen.

Whichever one lends itself to becoming the first good video game movie. So, Dig Dug with Fassbender as the guy that pumps up the monsters. Or Burger Time with Daniel Day Lewis playing the chef.

Actually I would love to see a movie based on Parasite Eve. They made a japanese movie but that was based off the book. It could be a truly scary and fucked up movie if done right.

There was a long standing rumor that Madonna's company had picked up remake/adaptation rights to the Parasite Eve series (we're talking over 12 years ago), nothing came of it. I agree though, there's something about opera, parasitic mitochondria and spontaneous combustion that could have made for a cool movie. The Japanese movie was mediocre at best, absolute shit at worst.

That was the only game I played all the way through in Japanese, don't know why I did that but I did.

Psychonauts. But please, don't make it live action. Get Brad Bird to do it with Pixar, with Tim Schafer co-writing the script.

Oh, and Leisure Suit Larry, starring Paul Giamatti.

I have (although they're not my cup of tea). I know the Crank films aren't really GTA films (they seem more like mashup of several old games) but they sort of brought to mind GTA for me.

There's a reason why most videogame-to-movie adaptations are terrible. Most of the "best" modern games have worlds and stories that are so vast, lengthy, and/or full of player choice that turning them into movies can only be accomplished by condensing them so much that they become something else entirely. Any adaptation of the Bethesda games (Fallout, Elder Scrolls) would have this problem, as would Mass Effect and the Rockstar games (Red Dead Redemption, Grand Theft Auto) to a lesser extent.

Then there are games with linear, simplistic (not in a bad way) stories that could work well as movies, with Bioshock probably topping the list. But games in that category (Castlevania is another one) have the opposite problem, in that their plots would require some serious expanding to work as a film, and any such tinkering risks transforming the material into something else. Super Mario Bros. is the most obvious example of this kind of thing.

I think the best we can hope for are movies set in the same worlds as the source games, which then end up being good films in their own right despite not resembling the games in any way other than setting and tone.
