Sale is just starting to go partially live. May have to hunt to find 50% titles at the moment.

The B&N Criterion sale runs from July 10 through July 30.

Here's a link to the B&N coupon thread here (http://forum.dvdtalk.com/dvd-bargains/533548-barnes-noble-coupon-thread-part-2-a.html).

Here's a direct link to the Criterion store at B&N.

Better hurry because the sale is working with b2g1f. Already have 2 orders in! Unfortunately can't get coupons to stack, but 3 titles for about $40 is not bad.

Here's a direct link to the blu-ray titles.

Order must be backing up because I've already received shipping notices on orders.

Wow -- based on the order numbers I have, they jumped 15000 numbers in 4 minutes. Wonder if that bodes well for this deal. :)

Even without the additional 10% member discount, this is well worth it for just over $14 per movie including tax.

Got in a couple of orders for:
Anatomy of a Murder
Harold and Maude
World on a Wire (43.56)

Army of Shadows
Something Wild
Lady Vanishes (43.56)

Alambrista
Letter Never Sent
Makioka Sisters (38.11)

Now, let's see if the orders actually go through. I paid with my credit card through paypal.

Got two more orders in.

Here's what I have:

Order #1: 12 Angry Men, Belle de Jour, Kuroneko $43.42

Order #2: Identification of a Woman, Letter Never Sent, Summer Interlude $32.56

Order #3: 8 1/2, The 39 Steps, A Night to Remember $43.42

Per $40 title average: $14.47 shipped
Per $30 title average: $10.85 shipped

Now to cross my fingers. All three orders are now showing in my history.

Insane deal if it goes through. Unless some super-great member coupon appears, I may not even have to set foot in a store for this one.

Looks like b2g1f has finally ended. I got in 5 orders for 18 different titles out of it. My last order I came out paying $12.78 average for six $40 list titles.

Still need to go to a store to get the David Lean and Noel Coward set. I couldn't find a good combination of titles to get it online before the sale ended. I'll wait to see if I get a good mystery coupon in a few days.

How did you pull that off?

I should clarify that was the average price for each one. Because I purchased six titles two of them were free. I also used the $5 coupon on the first page of the coupon thread, plus a 5% rebate ($4.04 back) using my B&N Mastercard. May also pick up some cashback if it goes through I didn't figure in.

I really only want two titles this go-around, Being John Malkovich and 12 Angry Men. I have honestly everything else I want. Also trying to not just pick up movies because they are "Criterion". Got burned on a couple of titles I just did not care for (and have been sitting on Half.com for now about 3-4 months).

I found that almost all of them sold on my Amazon Sellers' account vs. my half.com account. I guess your more sophisticated aficionados don't really frequent half too much.....just my 2 cents.

I feared that :). Most of my other stuff sells really well on Half.com but those Criterions (Cronos and Magician, both on blu) just won't sell. Oddly enough, I had a copy of Third Man on DVD (found it at an Antique Mall and turned it over...I kept my Blu-Ray copy), and that sold in a month which is good for me. I guess it just depends.

Yeah, I don't know what to expect here either as I've never had the opportunity to place orders while the other sale was still going on until now. I'm sure they got a large amount of orders, and I routinely have shipments ship out later than they claim they will so I'm not ready to panic yet.

I hate that I missed out on the stacking sales! I guess it's just as well, though, since I'm pretty much completely broke right now. In all likelihood, I'm going to be forced to sit this sale out unless one of my job prospects comes through soon, and it really pains me to say that because I always look forward to this sale.

It depends. The price is currently under $40 so don't be surprised if they reject it for that reason. But's it's always worth trying.

That's the discount break down from using a $5 coupon on the order. I have a similar 6 title order and B&N broke the coupon discount into $1.25 increments on four titles instead of just subtracting the $5 off the whole order.

Again, it depends. Some clerks will tell you the $35 price is the current price and not a discount because they don't have to do anything to give you that price. I.E... it rings up at $35 with no need for the clerk to apply a discount. I've had luck using the coupon on these sets but I know others have heard the excuse above.

Fell asleep WAY before this went live, but these B2G1 plus 50% off orders are making me hesitant to buy anything now that I know I won't be getting as good of a deal as others. Also, I know I'm not going to go in-store and try a coupon...and there are no more online coupons...so, when you've paid $12.99 in the past for a $40 title, it makes it difficult to pay $19.99.

I'll likely buy some titles later in the sale, but your posts, while awesome for you guys, has me bummed out....although, the sleep I got last night was awesome. I'm trying to put a dollar value on sleep...is that possible?

After missing out on the Buy 2 Get 1 I can't justify the cost for the 3 Chaplins. They come out to $20 a piece which isn't hard to find during non-sale times on Amazon or eBay.

Not only that, but I got a membership a couple of weeks ago and there aren't any current active membership coupons. Do any become active during the course of the sale?

This is the first one I've paid attention to, but so far I'm a little disappointed.

Do you not have a Visa card to buy it with? I just signed up for the two month trial with free shipping and applied the Visa code that's posted in the Coupon thread and got it for $18.32 shipped.

All you need for the trial membership is a different email address, you can use the same CC# address and name and it'll work.

I'd heard of the occasional deal overlap with the B2G1 offer, but I don't think it's happened during the last few sales I participated in. Really sorry I missed out. What an unfortunate time to have been on vacation and away from my computer.

There has almost always been at least one non-member online coupon active during past sales (usually 20% off one item). I had been averaging $17.99 per title when buying in pairs. Without that little extra incentive, I'll probably just hold out for a better deal. There's no B&N store close enough for me to justify a membership fee. :(

Yeah, I was surprised the sale overlap happened since B&N has tightened down on them with the last few sales.

Unfortunately there are not many online codes at the moment, but B&N is running a surprise coupon offer starting tomorrow. If you are receiving coupon emails from B&N you should get a online or store coupon that is valid through July 15. I also expect a few more coupons before the Criterion sale ends.

Yes, but the added potential for savings with a membership and coupons piques interest (as well as a possibility for an overlap with a b2g1 sale, as happened this time).

The only times I see them around $20 is in response to B&N's semi-annual. As already stated, with the membership discount and the frequent coupons, you can reasonably expect to be under $15 on the $40 MSRP titles.

Definitely not regularly, and only one of my three has ever fallen below $20. I checked camelcamelcamel for Amazon's all-time lows on the three titles I bought and discovered that...

Amazon total at their all-time lows: $62.97 ($20.99 per title)

I paid $48.47 ($16.15 per title)

All my tracking numbers are now working, and they show my B2G1 orders coming via Priority Mail. That should mean I will have them all by the weekend, which is awesome since I'll be away next week and would have had to get someone to collect them for me.

Planning on getting to the store tomorrow morning for the David Lean box I have on reserve, and will use the 8 off 40 coupon. That should do it for me this go-round, unless some awesome coupon shows up before the end. Not holding out much hope for the surprise ones, since I never get emails from B&N despite being signed up for them.

Occasionally Amazon will have a few discs -- never all at once and some of the discs never get discounted at all and certainly not to the $13-17 level for the $40 sets and even worse % off on the boxsets.

:(

I've been is pretty much every BN Criterion sale and this is the first time I ever caught this overlap. As far as I can remember it only happened once before and since then I've waited until 1-2 am every other and it's always been blocked. Every sale does seem to have its glitch however -- in November 2011 it was the December/Jan preorders that lasted about 6-7 hours. In other sales it was double coupons or allowing repeat use of one time coupons. They got rid of the 5 off 20, but replaced it with the 8 off 40 and forgot to program their computers correctly

Same here. I actually had forgotten about checking for it, but I was up late that night--watching a movie, of course--and jumped on the computer afterward and stumbled on the overlap in progress. After picking my jaw up off the table, I made three orders within forty minutes.

As others have said, using the term regularly is really stretching it. I would say it's not uncommon for some titles to get to in the range of $19.99 plus tax, not quite the 50% off but close. But the coupons offered from B&N along with the cash back options make a huge difference. And the titles that Amazon usually marks down are typically older releases; it's certainly not across the board. Some titles seem to never get a significant price drop.

I can't speak for others but for me Barnes and Noble has enough sales each year to easily cover the cost of the membership: 2 Criterion sales, B2G1, British TV...and more. And of course the book sales.

Trial memberships are free if you just need it for a couple purchases

I most certainly easily rip BN off/uhhh save more than $25 in a single Criterion sale (not counting the other sales) to justify it. Hell, I've saved more in a single instore purchase to pay for it some sales.

For all the justified grief BN takes about their everyday prices, when they have a real sale it's really hard to beat them.

I think there's a bit of confusion between "free trial" and asking for a refund on a paid membership. If I'm not mistaken, people can ask for a refund on their membership fees, granted they didn't get any rebates from it (or at least less than $25's worth). If you cancel a free trial before the end period, there is no charge.

I registered for a free trial last summer for the sale (which was after the terms & conditions were changed), which I canceled promptly after the sale and wasn't charged anything.

Is there not a clickable link underneath the Tracking number on a line that reads "Track this item at" -- that should automatically go to the proper shipper?

I know USPS often takes overnight to get the first update, but all my orders I can see where there at for tonight. UPS and Fedex usually at least get there numbers online fairly quickly.

Maybe I'm assuming something -- are you guys using basic free shipping or the expedited member 2-3 day shipping?

Clicking the link leads me to a DHL page where it says they can't find the number. I've this problem happen before with where it takes several days for the tracking number to update where it shows the location.

I think I won this round. I missed the online crossover between the two sales. I went to B&N today to pick up two titles, with two 15% off coupons (but I had a 3rd in my pocket). As already discussed, the coupons are now disabled for Criterions. But of course the cashier did not know that. He said he's been having this problem all day, and got approval from his manager to give 30% off every time a coupon did not work. I quickly snagged a 3rd title. :) I got 3 titles for $12.59 each after member discount. I also used a B&N MC to save another 5%, which is pretty much a wash with tax for me... $12.63 each after tax and all discounts...
I "think" the coupons were not actually used, thus I can still use them again later. I'll have to try them out...

I've had them use this option with me as well. Really slows things down. Guess I lucked out this time.

I also remember a DVD I ordered from them one time that got misdirected and ended up somewhere east of where I live. It ended up going back to a main hub, which was a good many miles west of me. There are offices along the way, so why it didn't get routed there is known only to those who determine these routes.

Took my mystery coupon in to a store to use it on The Samurai Trilogy, but I was denied because the coupon wouldn't be accepted by the register. She then determined by reading the small print that the coupon can't be combined with a promo, like Criterion, but she didn't make me feel like a dick for trying so that was cool. I still bought the trilogy but since it's a blind buy so I was hoping the coupon would alleviate the risk.

I might try this tomorrow if they don't override the coupon. How come it gave you the discount on the lower priced one? Isn't it automatically supposed to go on the higher priced item? I'll try it with a lower priced item maybe and then return it but keep the Criterion. Did you return on the spot?

The sting is also $39.99 for the digibooks edition.
I walked away and looked at the receipt then walked back and told her my wife
Was over riding the purchase and i needed to return it.

Yeah, that's why the discount should have applied on the Sting - because it's the higher priced item. Weird.

I had no problem with an $8 coupon yesterday for David Lean Directs Noel Coward at a local B&N store, while I was denied using the mystery coupons because they wouldn't scan.

Yes, I can also confirm there seems to be no problem with the regular member coupons working with the sale ($5 off $50 and $8 off $40). I also got David Lean box with the $8 off $40; it was accepted with no problem.

The "mystery" ones do seem to have been an issue for some.

Went in and tried to use mystery coupon for Being John Malkovich, was denied. Mystery solved, that coupon sucks for this sale. But the cashier did take the $8 off coupon! Got it for $10.69. My best deal there ever. It really is all about having a repor with the cashier.

Same thing happened at my store. I've been in three separate times since the coupon went active. The first time they were able to determine that the coupon was good for 20%, but it wouldn't work, so the manager did an override, and I got the 20%. Second time the cashier said that the coupon wasn't working so she was just giving 30% off to everyone who had the coupon. The third time, the cashier contacted a manager, who informed her that the coupon was not good on Criterions, so it looks like they finally figured out the policy. I can't complain, I was able to get a handful of Criterions with the coupon, so it worked out in the end. Very YMMV, but it never hurts to try it out at your local store.

Damn if B&N doesn't suck when shipping their orders. The first thing is that I was unable to place these B2G1F orders with our membership because my wife has the membership number and was asleep. I was trying to hurry to get these in before they cut off the deal so I opted for the free shipping and placed 3 different orders for a total of 9 movies. I received 2 of the 3 free movies yesterday in their own packaging. Their tracking showed maybe 1 or 2 steps and then my door. One of my orders was shipped with all 3 movies together and it went via DHL from Kentucky and then tendered to the USPS in Texas. WTF? My other two orders that were split up into the free one being sent alone and the other two sent together arrived in Georgia on the 12th and haven't seemed to have moved since then. So as of right now I'm still waiting on 7 of 9 movies.

Pretty much all the Criterions and other 50% off Blu are blocked so these are few those looking for other items. The codes are also good in store if the clerks will type them in without the coupon, but again most of the 50% sale items are blocked, but some folks have been able willing to do a manual override.

It's definitely a YMMV applying the BN buzz text "coupons" to this sale. I've tried at two Seattle-area B&Ns, and each time the cashiers were ready with the fine print from the Buzz sign-in page that has the same "may not be combined with any other coupon or promotional discount" that they use to justify blocking the mystery coupons for this sale.

That's what I'm worried about. If I hold up my cell and show them a text from the 'Buzz Club' they'll probably think I'm insane. I've had enough trouble just getting the $8 coupon to work, which from a cashier that didn't even realize the 50% off sale was happening. You'd think after, what, seven(?) Criterion sales that they'd be a little more familiar with coupon usage. This is one coupon code I won't be attempting, but good luck to those who do.

Okay, I just went to Barnes & Noble and got La Haine and Certified Copy for $15.96 each. (I'm pretty proud of myself about this because these kinda deals never work out for me)

So, I went up to the counter with both movies and asked the cashier if he knew about the Buzz. He said he did but never processed one. He called his manager over, she saw the text on my phone and she gave the greenlight. While the guy was ringing up both movies, I asked him if the coupon was a one time only thing or if I could come back and use it again. He said he didn't see why I couldn't use it again. So I asked him if he could split my movies into 2 separate orders and he did and 2 Criterion Blu-rays for $15.96 each. Victory!

Oops, late to the reply, but I see you now have an answer. Glad to hear it worked out for you! I'm going to hit one other store in the area and maybe go back to the ones I already used it on and see if there's a different cashier working. What is unusual about this code is several different people reported getting it, but it seems at different times. So do they have to read the text closely and see when it was sent? Does it actually expire in 7 days? Both cashiers pretty much glanced at the code and didn't question the text at all. The computer allows it's entry without any sort of override or manager approval.

The best part is you get an additional 10% if you have a member card too. And the system doesn't seem to track if you've used the coupon before (by being a member). There are about 4 more titles that I want, so it's my goal to milk this as long as I can so I can get them. I'm going to try again tomorrow.

PopcornTreeCt

^ Yeah when he said it was okay that I could use it on each disc, I wanted to go back and grab like eight other titles but I resisted. I think I will try it again at a different store. Also, this whole thing was set up by Visa -- and you don't even need a Visa card to have it processed. They process it like any other merchandise. Ah, capitalism.

Ok, I went out and did it again. Same place as the first time I used the coupon, different cashier. She let me do separate transactions again, and I got two titles (also resisting the urge to do more). She wasn't exactly eager to do it, but she tried it anyway. Oh yeah I and put one on one card, and the other on a Mastercard.

Godzilla________$12.99
Diabolique______$12.99

I feel pretty confident I can get the last two Chaplin titles I want to replace the warner DVDs I sold earlier this year (at the 12.99 price).

The thing about this Buzz code is that it's been around for months. Some posters have said they signed up six months ago, and it was the same code. Only now is it getting any.....buzz. :sarcasm:

Anyone upgraded their Criterion of DVD to Blu? I have the DVD but would get the Blu at the sale price but I'm not sure it would be that much of an upgrade to the video.Did you leave out a title?

Thanks. I must have deleted it accidentally as I was about to post. I'll fix it.

Was going to try to skip this sale, but you all keep bumping the thread and tempting me. Will try to get a few coupons and attempt a few purchases this weekend.

Picked up Godzilla (1954) on Blu-Ray tonight.

I've only bought 2 things from this sale, but there aren't many Criterions I want a the moment.

I still want to pick up Belle du Jour and Island Of Lost Souls before this sale ends. No real rush :)
